Castlelyons GAA Notes W.E. 14.3.16 2016-03-15 22:02:00

Second League win for Castlelyons Intermediate Hurlers.

Castlelyons 1-21 Milford 0-12

Hitting down to the village on Friday evening for the division two intermediate hurling clash of Castlelyons and Milford one could see the lights were shining brightly in Páirc an tAthair Peadar Ó Laoghaire a sign of the modern era in hurling for hurling and football.  It was a dry evening and the pitch was in great condition with the lights ideal.  These days the Milford ladies are tops in the camogie while the lads were traditionally strong so there was good interest in the game.

The two teams lined out strong and Ronan Bransfield landed a point from play but the Milford full forward pointed from play and a free.  However, Anthony Spillane back again after injury set up Aidan O Sullivan who made no mistake in finding the net and then Aidan almost immediately sent over another point.  Shane O Sullivan made a good save when faced one on one and we gradually began to take over in many positions.  Shane Moroney worked tirelessly especially on the puck outs and Darragh Lawlor added a point from out the wing.

Shane O Sullivan - Playing well in goalsAlan Fenton was chopped and scored the resultant free himself.  Then the Milford full back under pressure to cope with Aidan O Sullivan committed a nasty foul and was yellow carded. I liked the safe play and puck outs of our goalie Shane O Sullivan and the grafting of both midfielders Eoin Maye and Robbie Feeney as they both added good points from outfield.  We were leading 1-10 to 0-7 at half time.

Brian Carroll and Ronan Fenton came on at half time for Colm O Neill. We got on top again and had four points points and two wides through Anto and Ml Spillane and E Maye.  Declan Varner replaced Ciarán McGann midway through the second half.  Later Timmy McCarthy came on for Alan Fenton and Michael Dorgan replaced Shane Moroney. We ran out convincing winners on a score 1-21 to 0-12.

We were in control throughout the game and with the exception of a few players Milford were no match for us.  One player who really caught the eye as he had a ‘blinder’ all through was Eoin Dillon.  Although it is a while since he came on the scene for Cork at fullback in the League Final in 2010 he is certainly in some shape all the time.  No doubt we will have strong tests in Bandon, the Valleys, the Hill, and Kanturk and Kildorrery.  We now head the League with two wins from three (a game more than the others played) outings and well done to the Management outfit to date. We’ll talk about the Championship another day.

Junior B Hurlers have first outing.

Shanballymore 3-17 Castlelyons 1-14.

The county hurlers may have been at it in early January and finally came alive on Saturday evening before being clawed by the cats in the end.  However, in the lower sections of club hurling where the real men keep the game going Castlelyons Junior B Hurlers played and interesting challenge against Shanballymore at home on Sunday morning.

This was no ordinary team to take on in the first challenge game of the year as Shanballymore are County Junior B Champions 2015 and marched through Munster defeating Tipperary champions Eire Óg Annacarty Donohill in a mighty Munster Final.  They bowed out to Barrow Rangers, Killkenny in the All Ireland Semi Final.  Well done to Shanballymore on a great achievement and thy are now Junior A in Avondhu.

Barry O Connell - going very wellCastlelyons started well and kept in touch in the first half with all our backs doing very well especially Barry O Connell.  It was unfortunate that Ronan O Regan who was just back after injury pulled up after ten minutes and was replaced by Timmy McCarthy.  We kept in touch as Ciarán McGann kept the score board ticking over from frees and David Beausang first timed a great shot to the net to leave the half time score Castlelyons 1-8 Shanballymore 0-11 on the short whistle.

We done very well for a lot of the second half as we gave it everything and it looked as if we could take the game.  The pressure was intense for the last ten minutes and as the lads tried to empty the tank they hit some dirty diesel and we got caught for a few late scores including a major which gave Shanballymore victory.

Overall, this was an excellent challenge game and the mentors Aidan O Sullivan and Colm Spillane can feel well satisfied.  The importance of having a functioning and committed second team cannot be overstressed in order to give all players games.  Also, it is worth noting that most of the Intermediate teams now have a second intermediate or junior team so we must keep up the standards in Castlelyons and thanks to Aidan and Colm for their organisational effort and sure it would be great if they got a bit of help from the Committee – keep it up lads.

Team: - E Barry, M Geary, M Murphy, P Murphy, C O Neill, L Moroney, R O Regan, N McAuliffe, M J Dorgan, C McGann, B O Donovan (Snr), D Beausang, R Fenton, A Henley.  Subs: -  A O Neill, I Ronayne, M Hurley, D Sexton.  Scores: -  C McGann 0-10 (9f,1 play), R Fenton 0-2, D Beausang 1-0, M J Dorgan, 0-1, T McCarthy 0-1.

Happy Birthday - AntoCongrats to Anthony Spillane.

Congratulations to Anthony Spillane who celebrated his 21st Birthday in style last Saturday.  Anthony was on that famous team that contested a Premier Minor Final and then went on to win a county U21H Final a few years ago.  He has since represented Cork at both Under 21 and Senior level and won an All-Ireland Intermediate Medal in 2014.  A lethal forward on his game so Anto congrats and best of luck for the future.

An Reitóir

Both referees for our weekend games did a very good job. They were up with the play and in the IH League game there were a few well merited yellow cards dished out.  There were calls for frees from both sides at times but were they merited.  There are many reasons advanced as to why Cork hurling could be better.

The buzz lately is that referees in Cork blow for everything whereas in other counties they leave the game flow, and, of course, there is the mythical story of Brian Cody putting the whistle in his pocket and telling the boys get on with the tough hurling in training.

Therefore, it begs the question why mentors, supporters and others in Cork are roaring so much for frees at times.  It is appreciated that frees for rough play must be checked but blowing the whistle willy nilly can destroy a game. Then next time we will paw the Cats.
