Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 23.5.16 2016-05-25 23:03:00

Early blitz with the breeze by Valleys too much for Castlelyons.

Castlelyons 1-10 Fr O Neills 3-19

Castlelyons made the short journey to Páirc na Bríde on Sunday morning to play Valley Rovers in the League.  It was unusual to yield home advantage in the League and while there may be various reasons for playing the game there I suppose many of the players and supporters were heading for Thurles later for the Cork v Tipperary game and it shortened the road up by a few miles although the road home may have been longer after Cork’s performance.

However, Castlelyons like Cork were in trouble from the start as they were up against a very strong Valleys outfit and playing into a strong breeze.  They Valleys made good use of the ball and were very strong in the full forward line as Jack Walsh, Chris O Leary and Kevin Canty banged in goals in the 6th, 12th and 24th minutes together with a spray of points from around the field.  We managed just four points from A O Sullivan 0-1, Ml Spillane 0-2 and D Lawlor 0-1 and we were off target on five occasions to leave us trailing 3-12 to 0-4 at half time.

We improved somewhat in the second half and did outscore the Valleys by 1-6 to 0-5 but could not cut into the big lead.  Cian O Leary back and strengthened the full back line and there were a few other moves.  Aidan O Sullivan took a great pass from Eoin Maye and banged in a goal and we added a few more points as Darragh Lawlor tried very hard in the half forward line.  Overall this performance could be better and promotion to the Premier Intermediate League is difficult again this year as Valley Rovers head the table with eleven points from seven games and we lie midtable with just six points from seven games but many teams both above and below us have lesser games played.  A serious improvement is required for next Saturday’s championship game with Inniscarra otherwise we will be heading for the scenic route although it sounds nice it can be a tough road.

Team: - Jack Barry, Brian Carroll, Tom Carroll, Jamie O Leary, Ciaran McGann, Cian O Leary, Keith O Leary, Eoin Maye, Robbie Feeney, Ronan Bransfield, Shane Moroney, Darragh Lawlor, Ronan O Regan, Aidan O Sullivan, Michael Spillane.  Subs: - Shane O Sullivan, Colm O Neill for Jamie O Leary (HT), Ronan Fenton for Ronan O Regan (HT), Declan Varner for Ciarán McGann (55 mins) Declan Sexton for Robbie Feeney (55 mins) Brian O Donovan and Liam Moroney.  Scores: - Aidan O Sullivan 1-2, Ml Spillane 0-5 (frees), Darragh Lawlor 0-2 and Shane Moroney 0-1.

Launch of our new Main Sponsor ZEUS

Last Friday evening we are launched our new Main Sponsor namely ZEUS Packaging Products. Our Chairman John Healy welcomed all especially Gavin McCarthy, Mr Brian O Sullivan CEO and Brian’s family.  John spoke of the value sponsorship and that it would be put to good use.  John praised the success of ZEUS to date as it was announced as one of Ireland’s best managed Companies by Deloitte and this was the company’s fifth year winning such an award.  The Company were also presented with the gold standard accolade having secured Best Managed status for a fourth consecutive year.  John wished the Company the best for the future.  He thanks all who helped with the evening and especially the ladies of the Camogie Club who laid on the teas, etc.  Well done to all.

Congratulations.

Congratulations to Colm Barry who lined out with Cork Intermediate hurling team in the first round of the Munster Championship in Thurles on Sunday.  Colm played at full back and went into the game with a shoulder injury which troubled him during the game and he had to come off.  Tipperary led this game by four points at half time and won by eleven points on a score 3-20 to 1-15.  Good to see Declan Dalton the Imokilly keeper banging home a penalty but there was little else to take from the game.  Colm Barry already has an All-Ireland medal in this grade from a few years ago.  Cork looked for change in the type of players selected as it was stated we did not have a fair chance against other counties.  We got the change of rule but unfortunately the quality of player has not matched up.  There is certainly room for a lot of improvement overall but then it may be early days as the senior team have another chance on the scenic route.

Best of luck to our Intermediate Hurlers versus Inniscarra in the PIHC

We wish our Intermediate hurling team and management the best as they take on Inniscarra in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday evening next at 6.15 pm in the Premier Intermediate hurling championship.  We have a very tough assignment as we have a few injuries and Inniscarra are loaded with quality players in Sean O Donoghue, the Caseys and so many more.  Their manager the great John Meyler has been round the house and we often faced up to him before. However, we have a lot of good younger players who enjoyed success at minor and U21 and have plenty hurling so if we are committed with proper attitude we are in with a right chance.
