Castlelyons GAA Club Notes WE 15.8.16 2016-08-16 12:15:00

Junior A Footballers reach qualify for East Cork Final.

Castlelyons 3-14 Ballinacurra 2-4.

Castlelyons have delivered on the promise shown in recent County Junior B title as they have now qualified for the final of the East Cork Junior A Championship after defeating Ballinacurra comprehensively on Saturday evening last. This is an outstanding achievement and keeps our year alive as it fell a little flat due to recent defeats in Intermediate and U21 hurling.

Castlelyons were slow to settle and a little rusty as Ballinacurra were strong and moved the ball well.  Jake Hegarty banged in a penalty and they were a 1-1 up before we got on the scoreboard.  Eoin Maye and Antony Spillane found the range with a few minors to level matters and we were going well when Ronan Bransfield was active from frees.  However, Ballinacurra made a game of it again as Jake Hegarty flicked a great ball in to the net.  This gave Ballinacurra the lead at the short whistle on a score of 2-2 to 0-6.

However, our lads, getting used to competitive football again, began to show their potential in the second half.  Shane O Sullivan, who always moves well around the full line, banged in two great goals and Stephen Hickey landed one of his specialties that is a monster 50-yard free and we were on our way. Then as tempers flared a bit a Ballinacurra player was red carded and we continued to dominate in all areas.  Then Anthony Spillane crashed in a third goal and it was game over as we led to the final whistle with the final score Castlelyons 3-14 Ballinacurra 2-4.

So next up is the East Cork Final versus the winners of Cloyne v Carrignabhfear.  It is unfortunate that we had a few injuries from the game especially Brian Carroll, also Jack Barry and Tom Carroll picked up bangs.  We wish Brian Carroll a speedy recovery as I see him on crutches and as we know he is one mighty championship warrior so hopefully he will be okay for the final.

Congratulations and well done to all the lads and to Donal O Leary, Manager and his selectors James Moroney and Michael Barrett.  This is a mighty result and keeps the year going to more on the final later.  Finally, the referee was Ger Scully of Glenbower Rovers who was excellent on the night.

Under 16 C Grade County Final in Castletownroche this Friday ravening 12.8.16

Our Under 16 Hurlers played Buttevant in the Under 16 C Grade County Final in that fabulous and well prepared pitch in Castletownroche last Friday evening.  We got a walk over from walk over from Doneraile in the County Semi Final as some of their lads were on holidays.  Meanwhile, Buttevant had a facile victory over Ballinora in their semi-final on a score of 7-15 to 1-6 and, no doubt, this game helped them

We had played them in the County semi-final of the U13 of three years ago which Castlelyons won on a score line of 4-8 to 4-4. However, it is difficult to judge juvenile hurling and the progress of players as they go through the various age groups.  Lifelong participation in the game is the goal – play to stay – and here are Castlelyons lads now at 16 years of age in a county final.  This is a memory that will remain with them in the years ahead. So well done to their trainers, mans and dads and all those who have helped and encouraged the lads.

Anyways to the game itself which was a mighty struggle all through.  Very little separated the teams in a titanic struggle and it was Castlelyons 2-9 to Buttevant 3-5 at half time as the lads were up by one point. Conor McCarthy had a great goal towards the end of the game. As a twelve a side game played on a full sized pitch and there were tired legs with so much ground covered and it ended all square on a score of Buttevant 5-9 Castlelyons 4-12.  Well done to our lads they are mighty heroes and no doubt the game will help them for the replay which according to the Rebel Óg website will be held in Castletownroche on a date to be arranged.

Team: - Gavin O Neill, Declan Morrison, Eoin O Neill, Peter Hegarty, Peter Roche, Leo Doocey, Conor McCarthy, James Kearney, Seamus Morrison, Richard Morrison, David Morrison, Shane Cotter, Stephen Casey, Shane Flynn, Jack Kenny, Declan Geary and William Moran.

Imokilly advance in Senior Hurling Championship.

Imokilly hurlers advanced to the fourth round of the senior hurling championship by means of a convincing victory over Killeagh on the score of 2-22 to 1-12 last Sunday in sunny Midleton.  Imokilly scored 2-19 from play.  Castlelyons had two representatives, Tom Carroll and Colm Barry, on the team with Aidan O Sullivan still out with injury.  Tom Carroll came into the game with a few knocks from the football the previous evening but he done very well before being replaced on 62 minutes by Eoin Condon of St Catherines.  However, Colm Barry, playing in his most suited position of full back gave and outstanding display and received the ‘man of the match’ award on national and evening papers.  So congratulations and well done to Colm and Tom.  Next up in the SHC for the Candy Stripes are Erin’s Own SHC and this will be a really tough encounter.
