Castlelyons Footballers prepare for East Cork Final.

Castlelyons are in training for a second ever East Cork Final Junior A Grade Football Final.  We did play in a final in the late 1960’s again shortly after winning the “B” Grade when we played Midleton in Castlemartyr but were defeated.  So this team has the unique opportunity of creating history by being the first to win the East Cork “A” Grade Junior Football Championship.  However, in order to deliver on expectation, we must make a savage effort in commitment and preparation and maybe the Davy Fitz treatment of having a good chat and a planning session with the players with some “miwadi and biscuits” might help. 

We meet the winners of Carrignabhfear and Cloyne who play their semi-final in Castlelyons on this Friday night at the unusual time of 8.30 pm as players are travelling from London and Dublin after work.  Hopefully, we will have a full crop to pick from the final which may be played on the weekend of the 3^rd Sept with the exception of Brian Carroll and, of course, Colm Spillane.   The fact that there are no hurling distractions must be a help and, hopefully, Donal O Leary, his selectors James Moroney and Michael Barrett can get the lads up to the zone necessary to compete on the day as they are capable of playing very good football.

Castlelyons are U16 C Grade County Champions.

Castlelyons 3-15 Buttevant 5-5.

Our Under 16 Hurlers took on Buttevant in the replay of the Under 16 C Grade County Final in Castletownroche last Saturday evening.  In the first game it had taken a late Conor McCarthy goal to level things up as Buttevant were nearly out the gap but we showed savage commitment and managed to gain a great draw on the score Castlelyons 4-12 Buttevant 5-9 that day. 

So back to Castletownroche again last Saturday and we were against the breeze in the first half.  Buttevant made the early going and Mark Linehan banged in a goal but Castlelyons replied with two points as David Morrison sent over frees from 45 and 60 yards.  Then Dave Roche levelled the game with a point from play and Jack Kenny went on the rampage scoring 0-2 and 1-0 in quick succession.  At half time we led by 1-10 to 0-3.

The second half had many exciting moments as Buttevant scored first with a point and Jack Kenny brought a great save out of the Buttevant keeper.  Buttevant made a game of it with two goals and Conor McCarthy landed a great point from a ’65.  Shane O Flynn who was doing well set up Jack Kenny for a great goal.  We went a bit defensive as Jack Kenny, a mighty hurler, dropped back to help out but Buttevant did manage another goal and Gavin O Neill brought off two magnificent saves for Castlelyons as we went on to win 3-15 to 5-5.

What a victory for the lads and their mentors who have shown great commitment all year.  Jack Kenny scored 3-3, David Morrison 0-7, Conor McCarthy 0-2 and James Kearney 0-2.  There has to be winners and losers and it is hard look on Buttevant who have some mighty hurlers in Mark Linehan who banged in 4-3 and looked very strong at full forward, Ml O Neill and Gavin Carey.  In fact, these three lads are members of the Rebel Óg Football Development Squads but handle the hurley well.

Castlelyons Stars on Cork U16 Panel.

We are delighted to hear that both Jack Kenny and James Kearney of the victorious U16 team are now called to the Cork U16 Squad.  They have made the Cork Panel who contest the Munster U16 B Grade Inter County Hurling Competition up in Clarecastle, Co. Clare next Saturday the 27^th August.  In fact, Jack Kenny is captaining the side as they play Limerick at 11 a.m. and Kerry 12.15 pm and they if they get through the Final will be later in the day.  So congrats and best wishes to the lads from all the Club. 

Imokilly take on Erins Own in SHC in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday evening at 5.30 pm 

The Imokilly hurlers play Erins Own in the fourth round of the senior hurling championship on this Sunday evening in Páirc Uí Rinn at 5.30 pm as part of an attractive double header with Sarsfields versus Midleton timed for 7.15 pm.  Castlelyons clubmen Colm Barry and Tom Carroll are both going well for Imokilly.  

The Imokilly team is captained by County star Sheamie Harnedy with Paudie O Sullivan also in great form together with Aghada county men Michael Russell and Eddie Leahy has an amount of talent but must play as a team.   Erin’s Own will provide a stern test as they are normally at the business end of the championship most years and have hardened warriors in the Murphy brothers, Mark Collins and Alan Bowen.  Both games are expected to be quality encounters so Páirc Uí Rinn is the place to be on Sunday evening and your support for Colm and Tom would be appreciated as they don the Candy Stripes and bid to reach the quarter finals of the Cork SHC.

Congrats to our hurling and football star one of the “kids on the block” for a while but now like many of the other lads now coming of age and celebrated his 21^st in style at the weekend.

Best wishes to St Catherines in East Cork Hurling Final.

We wish the best to our neighbours St Catherines as they take on Sarsfields in the Jamesie Kelleher Cup East Cork Hurling Final on this Saturday in Youghal at 3 pm with Ger Scully the whistler.  This could be the proverbial cracker as Sars are a stylish outfit but as we know the Cats have paws too and could take the cream.

Club Raffle Launched on Friday night

Castlelyons Festival – Sunday August 28^th at 1.30 pm in Father Ferris Park.
