U16C Clayton Silversprings County Champions;

For all those that travelled to Castletownroche on Saturday last, they witnessed an epic match that will be long remembered in Castlelyons GAA History. Our U16 boys, who have played so valiantly all season, were justified winners of the Clayton Silversprings U16C County Final Replay in what can only be described as one of the most thrilling and entertaining hurling matches seen in recent times.

Full credit goes to both teams, who put on a brilliant display of hurling at its best. We had trained solidly the week following the initial draw as we knew that Buttevant weren’t going to make this match an easy one for us. We also knew we would have to be more than on form on Saturday to master this one.

Similar to last week’s encounter, it took the Castlelyons side a few minutes to settle. Buttevant got off to a flying start with a goal from Mark Lenehan in the first minute. However, this didn’t deter the lads and Dave Morrison got our first point in the third minute. Following this, Dave scored another two points. Buttevant got a point back. It wasn’t long before, Peter Roche followed suit and scored a great point from play, evading his opponent with great speed and agility. This levelled the sides and was followed by a flurry of points from Jack Kenny, Dave Morrison and James Kearney. Following his three points, Jack took on three players from the Buttevant side and scored a cracker of a goal in the 24th minute. With the addition of another great point from Dave Morrison, despite Buttevant scoring two points, we were well up when Cathal Egan blew the whistle for half time and we left the pitch on a score of Buttevant 1-03 Castlelyons 1-10.

The lads came out from the dressing room for the second half, to a rapturous applause from a large and excited Castlelyons Supporters Army. They always say supporters have a large part to play in a match and the Castlelyons Supporters certainly made themselves heard on Saturday.

Buttevant, came out fighting and within the first ten minutes of the second half, they dominated the play and had scored 2 goals and a point levelling the sides. This match was beginning to have a déjà vu feel to it.

It may have taken the lads ten minutes to get going, but once they started, they was no stopping them. Conor Mc Carthy scored a great point from a free in the 12th minute After a great strike from Dave Morrison at the half way line, Shane Flynn, surrounded by three Buttevant players, batted the sliotar over his head and straight in the hand of Jack Kenny, who belted it straight into the back of the net – what a goal, what a roar from the Castlelyons supporters. With Dave scoring another point, Jack Kenny added a third to ensure his hat trick of goals, the crowd were erupting.

Buttevant, certainly not lacking courage or heart, scored another two goals, keeping the scores almost level. However, and not for the first time, Gavin O Neill was superb in goal and made some spectacular saves, keeping us in the game until the final minutes when Conor Mc Carthy, James Morrison and Dave Morrison ensured our win by scoring three great points. Cathal Egan blew the final whistle, when the crowds sprinted from the stand and flooded the pitch to congratulate our fantastic players.

This was a match of epic proportions and our lads, showed fantastic valour and team spirit. They were consistent throughout the game and the level of skill and hurling on display, is one you’d hope to watch in an All-Ireland Final in Croke Park. We were privileged to have been able to witness such an outstanding performance.

Great praise, credit and thanks should go to James O Neill and Mark O Flynn for their hard work and dedication over the past year. This team have been outstanding throughout the season, they never succumbed to the pressure and gave 110% at every match, on every occasion.

Also huge thanks to all their parents for always believing in them and driving them around the country for training and matches. All of this had a huge part to play in Saturdays win, and they can be extremely proud in knowing how well their son participated and played this season.

The Castlelyons Supporters Army were out in force last Saturday and the previous Friday in Castletownroche and the team are extremely grateful for such wonderful support. It was great to see so many of the upcoming Castlelyons stars supporting this team and the club. Thank you.

A big thanks to our two great water boys on the day, who kept the lads well hydrated and on their feet, Ciaran Murphy and Kevin Barry – they were an integral party of the team on Saturday, job well done!

Finally an important thank you to Mark Murphy, Murphy’s Vehicle Repairs for sponsoring the catering for the County Final After Party. The boys and committee very much appreciated it and are looking forward to the next one!

Team Fantastic; Gavin O Neill, Declan Morrison, Eoin O Neill, Peter Hegarty, Peter Roche, Leon Doocey, Conor Mc Carthy, James Kearney, Richard Morrison, David Morrison, Shane Cotter, Shane Flynn, Jack Kenny, Seamus Morrison, Declan Geary, William Moran.

U6;

Well done to our young U6 Lyons, who played Kilworth on Monday night, in their first home match sporting their new jerseys. Many thanks to the club and Super Valu for the sponsorship. They boys wore their jerseys with pride as they entered the pitch. They played a very tough Kilworth team and got off to a slow start but as the game went on our boys, got better and better. It was a great display of Hurling from both teams and thanks to Kilworth for travelling out. Thanks to all the parents and supporters on the night.

U9/U10’s;

Our U10 Footballers maintained their good run of form with a thrilling 2 point victory over Carrignavar last Saturday.  With our backline of David Hegarty, Olan Lenehan, James McAulliffe-Barry and Sean O'Callaghan performing as a solid unit, we built a good platform to attack. Time and time again our backline forced their opponents into over carrying the ball by some great disciplined tackling. The ball was transferred quickly to our forwards, where Ruairi Counihan was on hand to finish two goals with style. When a 45 from Kevin Barry found its way to the net, we finished the half well up. In the second half we maintained control of the game but our scores dried up and in the last 10 minutes Carrignavar threw everything at us .Our boys were out on their feet but dig deep in the closing stages and hung on to win on a score line of 3-5 to 1-9. The U10 panel on the day was Kevin Barry, Eoin McMurtry, James McAulliffe-Barry, Tom O'Neill, Patrick Dooley, Aaron Goggin, Olan Lenehan, Ruairi Counihan, David Hegarty, Sean O'Callaghan and Luke Morrison.

We return to hurling action this Saturday where both our U9 & U10s will partake in a blitz organised by our neighbours Bride Rovers.

U12;

Our U12’s are continuing to train twice weekly and are looking forward to the upcoming U12 hurling blitz in Aghada next Sunday morning. Best of luck boys.

U16;

Our U16’s, not having fully recovered from their County Final win, went to Grenagh on Monday night to play the first round of Football Championship. With injuries and players away due to holidays, we made a few positional changes within the team. With Eoin O Neill in goal, we had Peter Hegarty and Peter Roche in the full back line. Leon Doocey and Declan Morrison played well in wing back positions. While Conor Mc Carthy and Jack Kenny were in the centre back and dominated play in the second half. In midfield Dave Morrison played well and scored a fantastic goal while Richard Morrison and Shane Cotter took up wing forward positions. With James Kearney and Gavin O Neill in full forward position, we scored a number of points and James had a great goal.

Tiredness certainly had an effect on our performance in this match and we went in at half time, a bit underwhelmed. William Moran replaced Gavin O Neill going back out for the second half. We upped our game and fought back diligently throughout the thirty minutes, finishing the match in a draw. Final score Grenagh 3-09 Castlelyons 3-09. The replay will hopefully be played in Castlelyons over the next week so keep an eye on our notice board and social media sites for confirmation.

U18;

Our minors are currently training for their upcoming Championship match against Kilta Og, which takes place on Wednesday August 24th in Lisgoold at 7pm. Full match report will be on next week’s edition. We wish the lads the very best of luck and hope everyone can get out and support the lads in Lisgoold on the night.

Castlelyons Carnival;

Best of Luck to the Castlelyons Carnival Committee with their upcoming event on Sunday August 28th. There are fantastic fun filled activities lined up with great competitions and prizes. It begins at 1.30 on Sunday with free admission and we would urge all out players and supporters to go along for an exciting afternoon.

We are back this week with a lotto jackpot of € 3,800 and tickets can be purchased in McDonnell’s, Coolagown, The Abbey Tavern Castlelyons, Murphy’s Vehicle Repairs, Sharon’s Hair Design, Fitzgerald Butchers Fermoy and from the usual ticket sellers and promoters. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support with the lotto, which is a vital source of income for our club.

SuperValu have been a fantastic sponsor to the Juvenile Club down through the years and we would urge all our players and parents to support local and support Riordan’s Supervalu.
