Castlelyons GAA Club Notes W.E. 26.9.16. 2016-09-27 23:35:00

Kanturk send us down the League Table.

Castlelyons 2-13 Kanturk 5-16

A very depleted Castlelyons outfit made the journey to Kanturk last Sunday morning for a Division 2 Hurling League game with the locals.  We had just sixteen players and Ronan O Regan also got injured during the game.  Playing against the wind in the first half we played poorly with two cracking goals from Aidan O Sullivan being the highlight.  Cork players Lorcan Mcloughlin and Aidan Browne were on top at midfield and there was serious pressure as Kanturk raced into a 4-10 to 2-6 lead at half time.  We improved considerably in the second half as Anthony Spillane scored a number of points but we could not cut back the Kanturk lead.  We are now hovering just above relegation and have one game left on Sunday next at home to Eire Óg with a noon throw in.  Lads we need to turn up, improve and give it all here and finish with a win in what has been one disappointing season.

Team: -  Colm Barry, Liam Moroney, Tom Carroll, Declan Varner, Ciaran McGann, Cian O Leary, Colm O Neill, Eoin Maye, Ronan O Regan, Alan O Regan, Antony Spillane, Jack Barry, Alan Fenton, Shane Moroney, Aidan O Sullivan.  Sub: -  M J Dorgan.

Castlelyons in County Minor Hurling Final.

Castlelyons make the short journey to that lovely Complex Páirc Mac Gearailt, Fermoy on this Saturday evening where they play Ballygiblin in Minor A County Hurling Final with a 3 pm throw in.

This game should prove a cracker as both teams have done very well lately.  Ballygiblin on the Tipperary border were a small rural club. But with excellent pitch development as long gone are the days of Lyons field, a new national school in the area when many in rural areas have closed, good linkage with their parish Mitchelstown and outstanding club workers has seen a massive growth and great success in the game in Ballygiblin in recent years.  This writer saw their minor team play Kilshannig in the North Final on a bad ould August evening in Fermoy and they appeared strong with good hurlers and tough as they took the title and went on to beat St Catherines in the county semi-final.  Many of their players have been with the outstanding Mitchelstown CBS football team this year.  They have very good hurlers in the O Sullivan twins, Sean and Cathal, George Pender, Cathal O Mahony, Lorcan Finn and Mark Keane who was a member of the Cork U16A hurling team this year.  They will be in high spirits after an outstanding victory in the Cork County Premier 2 Football final on Monday night but it must be so tiring in tough conditions. Nevertheless, these all-rounders’ provide a serious challenge to Castlelyons.

However, our lads have been on the road for a while and have enjoyed a lot of success.  Indeed, the whole Castlelyons Juvenile Club is going very well as there are so many players available with the parents and club officials making a mighty effort.  Jimmy O Leary and Shane Hickey have been with this team for a few years now and have called in intermediate hurlers the steely Brian Carroll and our county U21 Anto Spillane as selectors too.  John Paul Murphy, our goalie was on St Colman’s Harty panel last year. The O Leary twins Niall and Jamie have been part of development squads for many years now and done well with our intermediate team and Keith O Leary has been on a similar path over the years and also played on our intermediate team.  Barry Murphy is another quality hurler and he has been on both hurling and football U17 development squads this year and done excellently.  Indeed, Barry has been on various development squads in both codes and is very experienced.  Jack Kenny and James Kearney have been on the development squads for the last two years and enjoyed success with the U14’s last year and U16’s this year.  Our Panel is very balanced overall with a number of lads well able to defend and many well able to take a score including David Morrison and Conor McCarthy and these are but some of a very committed outfit.

Every final demands heroes and we have the players to do the business.  The hype and atmosphere in the field on Monday night as the Press came was mighty.  This game will come down to mental toughness on the day and during the last great Cork hurling era, a while ago now, the players wore a wristband “Gach Uile Liathroid” and that’s every single ball and if we fight for every ball we can take the cup back to Castlelyons.  Best of luck lads.  Castlelyons Abú.

Club Raffle on count down as Draw on Saturday 1.10.16 in Abbey Tavern.

The Annual Club Raffle launched by our Chairman John Healy on the 19th August last is now on count down and the Draw will be held in the Abbey Tavern on next Saturday night.  This Raffle helps defray expenses and assists with development during the year. The upkeep of the Grounds alone is very expensive due to the huge number of games in Adult, Juvenile and Camogie.  It would be appreciated if all members made a last effort in selling some books for the remaining few days as there are some very attractive prizes.  We wish to thank our many Sponsors of these Prizes as follows: -  The Abbey Tavern; East Cork Oil; Cavanaghs of Fermoy; Lagan Group; Metrology Systems and Services; Suit Distributors; Castlebride Plastics; Fitzgerald Bros; Cheers Bar; Bertie Murphy; Fermoy Print & Design and the Grand Hotel.  So a last push and all cards in by Saturday morning, please.

Congratulations to Cork Ladies Football team – another All Ireland.

Congratulations to the Rebelettes who won their sixth in a row All Ireland TG4 titles last Sunday and eleventh in in twelve seasons.  What a record and such great success at a time when things could be going better for the fellows.  Of course, special congratulations to Aisling Hutchings, Fermoy, and her family whose Auntie Bridget Murphy and Colm live in Castlelyons.   Aisling has been part of this team and panel for some years and accumulated a number of All Ireland Medals.  No doubt, her number would be greater but Aisling concentrated in Rugby to play in Ladies Rugby World Cup of 2014.  She also played rugby with Munster for some time.

 Junior B Hurling League

Castlelyons play Watergrasshill at home on this Friday evening at 8 pm.  To date we have had two wins from seven outings.  This is the last league game and it would be good to finish reasonable.  So again an appeal to all the lads to turn up as the Hill always provide strong opposition.
