Castlelyons GAA Club Notes WE 6.2.17 2017-02-07 20:20:00

Intermediate Hurlers defeat Ballymartle.

Castlelyons 4-16 Ballymartle 0-21.

Castlelyons made the journey beyond the airport for a challenge game with Ballymartle and came home with a win on Saturday last. This was the first outing of the new year and the lads showed good commitment. The home side were on top during the first half and in the last ten minutes they really turned on the power as they scored 0-5 without reply. They rested one or two of their stronger players for the second half but Castlelyons really came into the game and made some very good switches. Aidan O Sullivan showed massive early season form as he was moved nearer goal and banged in 3-1. Anto Spillane was razor sharp from frees as he scored 1-4 and Alan Fenton had 0-3 from play. We did concede 0-21 which may be a cause for concern but we did close out the game well to win by 4-16 to 0-21. Early days but a good result against a senior outfit.

Team: - Shane O Sullivan, Eoin Maye, Colm Barry, Brian Carroll, Darragh Lawlor, Keith O Leary, Colm O Neill, Ronan Bransfield, Robbie Feeney, Ronan Fenton, Ciaran McGann, Aidan O Sullivan, Alan Fenton, Anthony Spillane, Mike Spillane. Subs: - (all got game time) Darren Tobin, Brian O Donovan, Ronan O Regan, Ml John Dorgan, Declan Sexton, Liam Moroney.

It is regretted that notification for this game was not sent out to our loyal and great supporters per the usual text but such texts were sent out heretofore at personal cost to a club member and is being reviewed presently.

Footballers play St Catherines in first League game.

Our Junior Footballers who showed up so well last year as they were so unlucky in the East Cork Junior A Final commence the new season with an outing to Ballynoe on this Friday evening for a league game with St Catherines. Castlelyons are serious about the football this year with a coach and back in the league after an absence. There will be just five league games, two in February and two in March and one in April with a final shortly afterwards. Castlelyons will be favourites to make the final of this League. However, all teams in Division 3 are very strong with Catherines, Fr O Neills the 2015 Junior A champions, Castlemartyr, Carrigtwohill and Glanmire and it will be interesting can we match success with ambition by taking the Patrick O Mahony Cup to Abbeyside.

Point to Point Races in Knockanard on Sunday 12.2.16

All roads lead to Knockanard Point to Point Races on Sunday next Sunday. Castlelyons GAA are hosting a Refreshment Tent. There is a good bit of work in this and a “paper pick” at the end. We need help for a few hours on the day and we would appreciate if some volunteers gave their names to our Secretary, Michael Barrett.

This year Knockanard share racing with Punchestown, Naas and Toomdeely, Askeaton but it is expected that there will be six or seven races and possibly a divide. So, for a great day its Race Day in Knockanard.

Castlelyons lads active in Fitzgibbon Cup.

The third level Colleges senior hurling championship for the renowned Fitzgibbon Cup is really taking fire in the cool February weather as CIT fought their way back in with a good win over DCU on the score 1-14 to -06. Oure own Alan Fenton was on the panel for this game and showed good form against Ballymartle as he put over 0-3 from play which puts him in a strong position for game time in their outing at home to NUI Galway in a ‘winner take all’ to progress in the Cup.

UCC are on a role as the have won their two games to date defeating UCD 1-8 to 1-5 away in the last one. Our own Jack Barry made the goals for this game with Colm Spillane at full back and Anthony Spillane getting game time also. They are away to Maynooth University in their next game and should progress to the next round.

The bookings of our main pitch and Leahy’s field are very heavy presently and team managers ae asked to cancel their sessions immediately it is decided not to hold the training due to a game away or other reason.
