U21 Footballers advance in East Cork Championship.

Castlelyons 2-9 Youghal 1-7

Castlelyons played Youghal at home on Sunday evening in the first round of the East Cork Under 21B Football Championship and had a good win. This was a very young team as we had many minors and the rest just out of minor. But the handover from the Juvenile club is good and strong these days as there are quality lads coming through in hurling and football. Donal Barry, Manager and his selectors James Maye and Larry Murphy have done well to install Colm Barry, now teaching local, as Coach, and this will be a mighty help too.

We started very well by repelling a few Youghal attacks as Jamie O Leary was on top at full back against the Youghal dangerman No 14 and former county minor Andrew Joyce and Conor McCarthy and Peter Roche were not found wanting either in the corners. John Paul Murphy was steady between the sticks and had good kick outs. Barry Murphy was beginning to open up Youghal with great runs and it paid off as we got two points one through Mark himself and another layoff for a beauty by David Morrison. Our midfield pairing of Shane Moroney and Pierse Varner were working hard and winning some kick outs with forwards including Ian Riordan and Jack Ronayne doing well. The going was tough and it was 0-2 apiece with 20 minutes gone when Youghal No 14 had a bullet come off the crossbar but we defended well and forced a wide on the rebound. Niall O Leary was now dominating at centre back and banged over a point and laid off another to Mark Spillane who worked hard for a great point. Then Ml Geary took a pass from Jack Buckley and put us 0-4 to 0-3 ahead and Barry Murphy scored another point to put us up 0-6 to 0-3 at the short whistle.

At half time, Keith O Leary who had played a game earlier had to come on for Shane Moroney as Shane had to return to his army base in Limerick. Niall O Leary pointed on the start of the second half. But Youghal got in for a handy goal as there was a mix up in the backs. However, we kept up the hard work despite losing Niall O Leary to a black card and Barry Murphy to a nasty hamstring injury. These lads were a fierce loss as Niall was dominating the centre but rarely have I saw a lad of minor age play so well at U21 as Barry Murphy. He showed speed, the shimmy and accuracy and we wish him well in recovery as he is a lad with a future. We were now up against it but the younger players really came to the fore as David Morrison drilled a bullet of a penalty (Reid like) to the Youghal net and scored another great point from a free. Youghal did pick up two points but Shane Flynn got the clincher and what a score it was as substitute Declan Varner got good possession and made ground parting to Shane on the run and bang for a mighty goal. We ran out convincing winners on a score of 2-9 to1-7 and now play the winners of Castlemartyr and Midleton in the next round this Saturday.

Depleted Castlelyons draw away to Aghada in Intermediate Hurling League.

Castlelyons 2-16 Aghada 1-19.

Castlelyons played Aghada away in Rostellan at 11.30 am on Sunday morning and done well to earn a draw. We started very well despite being down a few of the team. Alan Fenton and Aidan O Sullivan had a goal and a point apiece and Keith O Leary was very accurate with 0-3 from play while Ronan Bransfield chipped in with 0-1. In fact, the forwards were really motoring and it took a serious save from the Aghada goalie to keep out a rocket from Aidan O Sullivan which might have put the game beyond them. However, Aghada changed tactics as they introduced a sweeper system when Ronan Kennedy dropped back from midfield for them and spread their forwards. This was so effective that they had the last eight scores of the first half (1-7) without reply from our lads. Pierse O Neill was effective for them and Willie Leahy in the half forward line but it was young Kevin O Hanlon and John Looney operating in a two-man full forward line who done a lot of damage. The first half provided some great entertainment with 24 scores and just two of them from frees (one to each side). This left the half time score at Castlelyons 2-8 Aghada 1-13.

The second half was tight but with plenty of good hurling on a heavy pitch but Castlelyons had the breeze. Aghada twice went ahead by 0-3 and we did well to pull them back. Robbie Feeney, Ml Spillane, Eoin Maye, Ronan Bransfield, Ronan Fenton, Alan Fenton all scored 0-1 apiece and Aidan O Sullivan finished the second half with 0-2 to leave it a draw game 2-16 to 1-19.

Aghada had very effective players in John Looney 0-4 from play, Willie Leahy 0-7 from play and frees many of which he earned himself, Kevin O Hanlon 1-2 from the corner and Pierse O Neill scored a few points from wing forward. Overall, Aghada had strong forwards and I suppose our lads did well to limit them throughout the hour. But their back in Ronan Kennedy midfielder Charlie Terry done very well too.

We were short a few players for this game but all the lads on the field have played Intermediate championship before and no doubt management must be a little disappointed as they were targeting a win here but Aghada have ideas of their own and their Coach Colm O Brien knows a thing or two about the game. Once again, we were in a bit of a daze when the opposition slipped into a “sweeper system” and Ballinhassig did the same to us last year in the championship so we must develop our own contingency tactics and this must be done in training and challenge games. We are still in the shake up for the League as we have only dropped a point but both Valley Rovers and our old rivals the ‘Hill have moved one clear. The game was refereed by Arthur Murphy who did well.

Team: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, R Feeney, Colm O Neill, Tom Carroll, Darragh Lawlor, Michael Spillane, Eoin Maye, Ronan Bransfield, Keith O Leary, Ronan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan, Ronan O Regan. Subs: - Eoin Barry, Brian O Donovan, Ml John Dorgan, Padraig Murphy, Liam Moroney.

Cork Hurlers spring to life with mighty win over Waterford.

I went to Dungarvan on Saturday night and to Mass on Sunday morning in a lovely Church at the foot of the Comeraghs. It reminded it of my home parish in Co. Clare. The Gospel was about Our Lord and some of the Apostles going to a high mountain to be alone and the priest mentioned in the sermon that for some they like to get to the top of the mountain, others the goal and for many it is a hobby. I thought about Kilkenny, Cork and, of course how would Clare do this year, whatever way you want to take it. But later in the day in Walsh Park I could see there are signs that Cork are, at least, climbing that mountain again.

They had with a rousing win against a star-studded Waterford outfit in their own back garden. This was a great effort from Cork winning so many battles around the field with so many young players. Waterford looked a little jaded as their lads are on the go hard now for a few years but it is only March and we must wait for a few daisies yet. Well done to Colm Spillane who had possibly his best game to date and it will surely give him confidence for the future. Keep it going Colm.

First Aid.

Gaelic games as we know is a contact sport and participation carries risk of injury. The aim must be for all involved to take all reasonable action to make our sports as safe as possible, not only for players, but also for referees, other officials, coaches, voluntary workers and spectators. Preventing injuries in Gaelic games is the ultimate goal, but as injuries will continue to occur despite the most thorough of prevention strategies, attention must also be given to the response to and the treatment of injuries. It is imperative that we have people at our games that can administer First Aid as required.

Team Managers must regularly check the contents of their First Aid kit, as even kits that are purchased whole change over time through use. Always ensure that any items taken from a First Aid kit are replaced as soon as possible. Items should not be used after the expiry date shown on packets. It is advised that every club examine their First Aid structures for games and grounds.
