Castlelyons defeat Valley Rovers away in Brinny.

Castlelyons 2-16 Valley Rovers 0-19

We travelled away to Brinny on Saturday evening to play the home side Valley Rovers and came away with a narrow but merited three-point victory. This was always going to be a test as we got a bit of a beating from them last year. The Valleys were down three regulars, star player Kevin Canty, Goalie Willie Browne and John Cottrell which, I suppose, evened up the teams but they had county hurler, Chris O Leary. The Brinny pitch was in good condition and weather conditions ideal and Alan O Connor of Ballygarvan did a good job as referee.

Valley Rovers were the better team in the first half and led at the break on a score 1-7 to 0-12. It was obvious there was a bit of shock and thunder in the dressing room as our lads came out in the second half and dominated for long spells. Shane O Sullivan was in mighty form in goals and his puckout strategy was bang on. The full back line done well and good to see Brian Carroll improve as the game went on as he is recovering after injury. A feature of the half back line in the second half was a mighty tussle between our own Declan Varner and inter county man Chris O Leary with Declan having the proverbial stormer as Tom Carroll and Jamie O Leary did well. Niall O Leary and Eoin Maye fought hard in the middle and while the half forwards were under pressure they came good in the second half. The full line has the firepower and while it was great to have Alan Fenton on form we hope that his injury will have cleared up in time for the championship on Sunday. Jack Barry came on late in the game but is still in rehab due to serious hamstring injury.

Overall, it was a good day at the office for our players and management as we have hit the top of the Division 2 Intermediate Hurling League but, of course, we have more games played than our opponents at present. We have several nasty injuries and its fingers crossed for the championship and a good performance.

Team: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Robbie Feeney, Jamie O Leary, Declan Varner, Tom Carroll, Niall O Leary, Eoin Maye, Darragh Lawlor, Ciaran McGann, Aidan O Sullivan, Michael Spillane, Anthony Spillane and Alan Fenton. Subs: - Ronan Bransfield for Michael Spillane (HT), Ronan Fenton for Ronan Bransfield (inj) (52 mins), Jack Barry for Aidan O Sullivan (53 mins) (inj), Keith O Leary for Jamie O Leary (54 mins), Liam Moroney, Colm O Neill, Darren Tobin, Ronan O Regan, Brian O Donovan (broken thumb).

Castlelyons take on Kanturk in Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship on Sunday.

All roads lead to Castletownroche on Sunday for our game with Kanturk in the first round of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. We do have some injuries but we must be completely positive and go all out for this one as Kanturk will provide stiff opposition and are contenders for the double this year in hurling and football. Looking at their outfit shows a host of men with intercounty experience who have worn the cork jersey at various levels in Anthony Nash, Darren Browne, Lorcan McLaughlin, Jerome Walsh, John Browne, Lorcan O Neill. That great warrior Aidan Walsh may be unavailable to them on Sunday due to injury. They are fresh after a mighty win over Mitchelstown in the football championship last Sunday too.

However, we have done reasonable in the League to date although this form is not always an indicator for the championship. We have been unfortunate with injuries and we are on tender hooks as to availability of the full deck. This gives the management of bit of a job to get out the best team for the day and get them mentally right. I must give the lads credit for great effort this year but we all know that no matter what weights one lifts or protein one takes it is the heart for the battle on the day that counts. Hopefully, we will be ready and we wish the very best of luck to Mick Spillane, his selectors and the lads on Sunday. We would appeal to all to come along and give the great traditional shout for the team. Castlelyons Abú.

Imokilly Senior Hurlers prepare for Championship.

Imokilly play Blackrock in Church Road on Monday 1st May in a challenge game as preparation for their upcoming championship. While there are a lot of good players’ available preparation could be better as there are so many club games. It is ironic that some clubs are unhappy with a players’ commitment to his county but then they will not even make their lads available for the occasional Monday evening session with the Division. This is an opportunity for a player to improve his game and play senior hurling and benefits will accrue to any club to give their players this kind of experience. So hopefully a full panel will be available to Fergal Condon and his selectors next Monday evening for the Blackrock game and the Barony will be ready for Bishopstown in the first-round tussle on Saturday 6th May.
