Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Club Notes: 24.04.17 2017-05-04 08:24:00

P.I.H.C;

Best of luck to Mick Spillane and the intermediate hurlers who take on Kanturk in the first round of the 2017 Championship this Sunday in Castletownroche at 3.30pm. We are looking forward to a great match and wish the lads all the best.

Schools Coaching;

This week sees the resumption of the School’s coaching in a joint venture between Rebel Og and Castlelyons Juvenile GAA & Camogie. Noel O’Brien, has taken the helm again this year and with his vast experience, we’re positive the children will gain valuable coaching skills, along with improving on what has been done in training over the past number of months. Training sessions are in Castlelyons National School on Tuesdays and Wednesday morning. Then Noel moves to Kilmagner National School for Wednesday training there. We look forward to seeing the results of the training over the coming weeks.

U10;

On Saturday 22nd we played the 3rd round of the Rebel Og Football League away to Bride Rovers. Both clubs were able to put out two teams and the overall end result was a draw. In the first game Bride Rovers took a strong lead but in the second half our boys upped their game. Rory Condon and Dylan Leetch moved into defence and between them, built a platform for our second half comeback. Sean Og took over the game at midfield helped by the tenacious Oisin Cronin, who broke up many Bride Rover attacks and also chipped in with 3 goals of his own. In the other game Richard Barry was our top man as he covered every blade of grass. Scorer in chief was Torin O'Brien who kept the Bride Rovers backline busy all morning. At the end of a good morning’s football, a draw was a fair result and after 3 rounds of the football league the boys have been unbeaten. Full panel on the day was; Shane Hussey, Sean Og Maguire, Adam Lardner, Lee Ryan, Cathal Sheehan, Oisin Cronin, Dylan Leetch, Jack Reals, Sean O'Callaghan, Jack Burke, Richard Barry, Tom O'Neill, Luke Morrison, Torin O'Brien, Rory Condon and Kevin Barry.

U12;

One Sunday last we welcomed Shamrocks for an U12 Hurling league game. As we had been doing well in the league, the lads were confident of a good display, maybe too confident as it turned out! For whatever reason, we were hit for three goals in the first five minutes. This left us with a mountain to climb, and, in fairness to our lads when we did get going we produced our best display of the season to claw the lead back to a single point at the end. Again, a great effort by the lads, pity about our slow start, but plenty games to come to rectify the loss. Our team was:

Kevin Barry, Aaron Goggin, James McAuliffe-Barry, Colm White, William Verling, Cathal O Riordan, Patrick Dooley, Eoin McMurtry, Mathew Rosner, Olan Lenehan, Oisin Morrisson, Mark Cullinane, Jack Cremin and Colman O Flynn.

The day after, Monday, we had to make the long trip to Cill-Na-Martra (which is in Rebel Og east by all accounts!) for an U12 Football league game. After been beaten the day before, the lads were in no mood for a repeat. Colm was again very solid in goals, William, James and Cathal were tough and tight in the full-back line. Outside them, Eoin and Patrick used their speed to clear most of what came at them. At midfield, Mathew and Colman won their battles to move the ball inside them, where Jack and Olan bossed the half-forward line. Full line saw Mark, Ruari, Kevin and sub Brian, use the ball well and with a full team effort, this one was over well before the final whistle.

Training continues twice/week, next game looks to be around May 8th.

Lotto;

We have a Lotto Jackpot of €10,600 this week. The Club would like to invite all members where possible to join the Club’s Lotto. The lotto is a major financial contributor to the club and is a much needed source of income. Annual lotto tickets can be purchased from any of the clubs executive members while weekly tickets can be obtained from the many Lotto ticket sellers/businesses in the parish.

€2 tickets can be purchased in Murphy’s Vehicle Repairs, Sharon’s Hair Design, Community Centre Bar, Fitzgerald Butchers Fermoy, Mc Donnell’s Coolagown, Castlelyons Post Office, GlanBia Castlelyons, The Abbey Tavern and from the usual ticket sellers and promoters.

Club Recycling Initative;

The Juvenile club are currently taking in old helmets and hurley’s, and re-using them in the local schools for training purposes. This is a great initiative and helps players get a taste for the game, without having a large outlay from the start. If you have any old hurley’s or helmets that you no longer use at home, why not bring them along to training and managers will take them from there. We would encourage all families to support this new initiative.
