Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 3.7.17 2017-07-05 12:30:00

Junior Hurlers Drive On.

Castlelyons defeat Youghal in East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship.

Castlelyons 2-11 Youghal 0-13.

We headed for sun drenched Lisgoold last Friday evening with a handy Junior B team that had won some league games and played some challenges. This level of preparation really helps as the lads recorded a very convincing four-point win over Youghal’s second team, their first one being a senior outfit.

After ten minutes, we were 1-3 to 0-2 ahead with Brian O Donovan, Alan O Regan and Chris Cotter scoring 0-1 apiece and Chris Cotter finished a high ball to the net. While Ryan Cody and Johnathan Ormonde had 0-1 each for Youghal. We were playing with the breeze, a strong sun to our backs and, of course, down towards the Village. We continued to hurl well as Alan O Regan was fouled and Brian O Donovan pointed. Then Ronan O Regan got a great point from outfield and Brian O Donovan closed out the scoring for the first half with a point from a free. Meanwhile, Ormonde, Cody, Walsh and Kelly added points for Youghal to leave it just 1-6 to 0-6 at half time. This left us under pressure for the second half as we now had to hurl against the wind, sun and that that tough pull up towards the Top Cross goals.

Referee Paudie Kearney threw in for the second half and Youghal applied a lot of pressure for a while but there only return was 0-1 from a free by Ormonde as all our back were resolute and we began to come into the game again as Shane Moroney and Ronan Fenton were winning a lot of ball in the forwards. Dunny was wide from a far out free for us but Alan O Regan took a good pass from Shane Moroney and planted a good point for us. Moroney again set up Ronan Fenton for another 0-1. Then with ten minutes gone in the second half Mike Hegarty came onto a broken ball and struck a mighty ground shot to the net from 14 yards out to give us a 2-8 to 0-8 lead. Our middle third of Shane Fenton, Colm O Neill, Noel McAuliffe, Dunny and Ronan O Regan really imposed themselves in the game now and we needed it as Youghal attacked strong in the middle ten of the second half. A feature of the game was the steady display of our goalie, JP Murphy, with long puckouts when needed and accurate as necessary. Youghal put over 0-4 in this time from Ormonde 0-2, McSweeney 0-1 and Kelly 0-1 to leave it 2-8 to 0-12 with ten minutes left on the clock.

Mark Spillane came on for M J Dorgan in the forwards who had got through an amount of work and Cian O Leary for Padraig Murphy who had work hard in the backs. Spillane then set up Dunny for a vital 0-1 but Youghal’s McSweeney replied with 0-1. Then Spillane again parted to Chris Cotter who laid on a beauty for Moroney and he obliged with 0-1. There was some fierce pressure by Youghal but great defending inside and indeed all through particularly by full back Liam Moroney, Mark Murphy and the lads. Unlike last week we showed a steely resolve of ‘never say die’ and Dunny closed out the game for us with 0-1 from a glorious free sending us into the next round against Ballinacurra by a score of 2-11 to 0-13. Well done to the lads and the management team.

Congratulations to Barry Murphy

Well what a week in hurling and this time it was the Cork minors as they took on Tipperary in Thurles last Thursday evening. A huge crowd of 4, 200 turned up as Cork are coming back these days. This was one of the finest games ever witnessed possibly in any grade with the team’s level at half time, full time, half time in extra time and full time and drained in the end as it ended in a draw. Our own Barry Murphy played his part during the second half of the game as the panel were rotated to keep the tempo going.

Then back to Páirc Uí Rinn on Monday evening and despite the cost and disappointment of the football the day before 8,142 packed in for the biggest minor attendance ever in Cork to witness yet again a massive game of hurling. It was equally exciting with fans revelling in the quality of Cork’s hurling as they roared to an 11-point lead but then Tipp pulled it back to just one point but this time Cork motored on for another 0-2 and took the spoils. Again, great to see Barry Murphy feature in this memorable game. Congratulations to the management especially Denis Ring and all the lads especially Uí Mac Coille men, Aaron Walsh Barry, Carrigtwohill, Sean O Leary Hayes, Midleton, Liam O Shea Lisgoold and, of course, the Roche twins Eoin and Brian from Bride Rovers. They now go back to Thurles on Sunday with zest to lower the Banner for a first win in nine years in the minor grade and the best of luck to all.

Next Stop for Colm Spillane – Munster Senior Hurling Final.

Well it is fast becoming a season of Sunday’s for Cork with massive victories over Tipperary and Waterford already as they head for the Munster Senior Hurling Final in Thurles on Sunday against the men from Clare. Undoubtedly, Cork are strong favourites as Clare had just the one game against Limerick while for victory in that one and thy say that Clare never beat Cork in a Munster Final. There will be some crowd given that Cork are in both minor and senior games. Anyway, our own club will be well represented by Colm Spillane who has done well in all games to date and we wish him the very best of luck on Sunday.

Notes of the 26.6.17

Castlelyons just fail the test as Fr O Neill’s go through in PIHC

Fr O Neill’s 5-17 Castlelyons 3-20.

Well mar deirtear an seanfhocal “tosach maith leath na hoibre” and Fr O Neill’s got exactly that in Killeagh last Friday evening as they shaded a result in the ‘winner take all’ premier intermediate hurling championship against our lads. The weather was good and a big crowd led to a massive atmosphere as they were treated to some real excitement and great hurling from the throw in.

Fr O Neill’s attacked savage from the start, set up with a two man inside line and banged over a point. Then early drama as they grabbed a good ball turned and appeared to kick the sliotar over the bar but the umpire signalled a goal and it didn’t stop there as Billy Dunne pointed almost immediately and then Eoin Conway banged in another goal for them. Our goalie Shane O Sullivan had little chance as the bigger O Neill’s men held sway. Aidan O Sullivan did score a fine point for us but with just five minutes gone we were 2-2 to 0-1 down.

However, there was some mighty hurling from then on as Colm Spillane was outstanding at midfield and in the next ten minutes we scored 0-3 to 0-2 and even though the recovery was slow there was a hunger in our hurling especially as Tom Carroll laid off one to Colm Spillane who scored a rousing point. But all the time while we got a few scores O Neill’s were outscoring us and as we moved to half time it was 4-11 to 0-11 when Ciarán McGann rose to a high ball and directed it to the net to give us a bit of hope at half time despite being down three goals.

We were really rattled in that first half but the lads reorganised with Colm Barry going back to full back even though he was selected there originally. But disaster again inside thirty seconds of the restart as Billy Dunne banged in goal No 5 for them. But giving credit where it is due our backs, especially, got really into the game and locked down the highway as Colm Barry and Niall O Leary hurled for their life well backed up by the Carroll brothers, Tom and Brian Carroll and Declan Varner as Ronan Bransfield followed their sweeper. We began to click in the forwards and the points came more freely with Alan Fenton scoring a good goal. Remember we were fifteen points down at one stage but then when Ciarán McGann rattled the net after a massive Colm Spillane effort we were just three points behind. Anthony Spillane and Aidan O Sullivan were motoring well and Jack Barry added fierce energy to the game as he came on for Darragh Lawlor who had emptied the tank in serious first half effort. Ronan Bransfield and Keith O Leary replaced Robbie Feeney and Michael Spillane as both men had given their all with Spillane landing a lot of scores.

Fifteen minutes to go with Colm Spillane really directing the orchestra and well assisted by Eoin Maye we drove at ‘em but a few fouls gave O Neill’s Declan Dalton to increase the lead and back we came again as Anthony Spillane 0-3 and a rampant Jack Barry 0-1 cut the gap to 0-2. However, we sent a few hail mary’s left and right of the posts from outfield when it should be dropped in as we were winning the ball inside and O Neill’s held out for what for them was a memorable victory.

For us it is it’s ‘what’s another year’ as we have been somewhat unfortunate since our last county final against Youghal a few years ago because we just seem to lack that steely finish. However, this was a massive game and despite giving away such an early lead we gave a memorable display of heart and quality hurling. Of course, tactics play a major part in the modern game and we have a bit to learn in this department but success will come sooner rather than later as there are some great lads coming though. We are well up in the League and can make the final. We are in the semi-final of the football and Abernethy Cup. There is a lot left to play for and the Juvenile section is going well. The lads have done a lot of good work this year in developing a new gym and shown great camaraderie in arranging club gear.

Scores: - C McGann 2-0, M Spillane 0-6, A Spillane 0-4, C Spillane and A O Sullivan 0-3 each, N O Leary, E Maye and J Barry 0-1 each.

Team: Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Tomas Carroll, Robbie Feeney, Colm Spillane, Niall O Leary, Eoin Maye, Keith O Leary, Darragh Lawlor, Ciaran McGann, Aidan O Sullivan, Alan Fenton, Anthony Spillane, Michael Spillane. Subs: Jack Barry, Declan Varner, Jamie O Leary, Ronan Fenton, Ronan Bransfield, Shane Moroney, Ronan O Regan, Colm O Neill, Liam Moroney, Alan O Regan, Michael John Dorgan, John Barry, Noel McAuliffe, Darren Tobin.

Barry Murphy on Cork Minor Hurling Panel for Munster Semi Final this Thursday

All roads to Thurles for this Thursday the 29th June as Cork take on Tipperary in the Munster minor hurling semi-final at 7.30 pm and the referee is Rory McGann from Clare. Cork who had a comprehensive victory over Waterford in Páirc Uí Rinn back in May are really fancied in this game as many of the team done well in games over the weekend and came through unscathed. Barry Murphy had a hamstring injury prior to that Waterford game but came on and done well scoring a fine point. Hopefully, that niggling injury has cleared up and he could well feature in the game in Thurles. The team is expected to be announced this Wednesday. We wish Barry and the Cork team well in a tough assignment.

Tickets for the Munster Hurling Final.

Club members requiring tickets for this game should get their tickets early for this game it could be a full house for the Munster Hurling Final in Thurles on Sunday 9th July. The tickets for next Sunday’s Football Final in will be more freely available as the crowd may not be as big. We wish Cork well in Killarney and there is always a good game in them but a bit of support would be great.
