Castlelyons record facile victory over Meelin in IHL.

Castlelyons 5-17 Meelin 0-7

Castlelyons had a facile victory over Meelin in our second last league game which was played at home last Wednesday night at the late hour of 8.30pm. This, of course, was for good reason as both teams had arranged to play the game in Mourne Abbey (home to Clyde Rover). Then as the lads had left and well on the way word came through that Clyde was unplayable due to the bad weather. However, our management worked immediately rearranged the venue. Meelin agreed to come to Castlelyons to play the game. Mark Murphy of Bride Rovers obliged at the shortest notice to referee it and it was game on. Our lads led 3-10 to 0-3 at half time and 5-17 to 0-8 at full time. This was a real sporting gesture from Meelin to travel a round trip of ninety miles to play this game and we thank them for such effort. Thanks to Mick Spillane our Manager who set up our own venue and our Chairman Maurice Carroll who arranged refreshments for all concerned.

The team and panel on the night was: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Tom Carroll, Declan Varner, Colm Spillane, Jamie O Leary, Eoin Maye, Niall O Leary, Darragh Lawlor, Ciarán McGann, Anthony Spillane, Jack Barry, Aidan O Sullivan, Michael Spillane. Subs: - Eoin Barry, Liam Moroney, Brian O Donovan, Colm O Neill, Alan O Regan (all got good game time).

Relegation battle versus Tracton in Eire Óg – Tuesday night.

At the time of going to print our fate will be decided in this relegation battle versus Tracton at Eire Óg Grounds on Tuesday 28.9.17. Well we have two chances really defeat Tracton or if in the event being beaten we can plead our case to stay up for 2018. But surly we are worth a win as we have quality players but we must be up for it as Tracton are a proud club and players like Mick O Sullivan or the Lynch’s will not give up the battle easy. Our own form is good in the League as we are on course for promotion and making the final of Division 2 of the IHL but unfortunately, we did not really show for the championship as we started poorly in both games and comeback efforts were beyond us. Hopefully, with many lads getting great senior experience with UCC and Uí Mac Coille lately we will develop a few leaders to close out games and do the business to give us confidence for 2018.

East Cork Junior B Final versus Sarsfields down for Sunday 1.10.17

We are playing Sarsfields in the final of the East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship on Sunday 1^st October in Watergrasshill at 4pm. We had a good win over Aghada and a close call over a young St Catherines outfit and will have to be at our best on Sunday. Fair play to Donal Barry and his management team they have done a mighty job in ensuring that there is a strong second team being fielded in the club and it is mighty to be in the final. However, we must realise that we have good produce handed on to us from juvenile level and like the farmer or the entrepreneur it can be a big help to have good produce so we must go for the win. There is also the fact that many lads can develop and find their form in their 20’s and again the Junior B management are giving lads this opportunity.

The Sarsfields academy and range of players from such a large population is rich and very strong. While they have many teams, they will not be found wanting at this level either and the likes of Ross Fahy, Ian Burke, Patrick O Driscoll and Danny O Mahony and John O Driscoll are top class hurlers. They had good victories over Youghal and Midleton in the semi-final. Nevertheless, our lads have prepared well and are an even team with good spirit. So, all roads to the ‘Hill and best of luck lads. Under 21 Hurlers face Clonakilty in County A Quarter Final.

Our under 21 hurlers play Clonakilty in the County A Grade Quarter Final possibly on Sunday week next the 7^th October. Clonakilty defeated Kilmeen in Ballinacarriga last weekend and are a very good side. We had an excellent win in the East Cork final over Bride Rovers and I believe the lads are training well. We have lads involved in Junior B, Intermediate and, of course Jack Barry and Niall O Leary with UCC and Uí Mac Coille so we will be hoping even though they are busy that they will all be victorious.

County Senior Hurling Quarter Finals end in stalemate.

The County Senior Hurling Quarter Finals involving Imokilly v Erins Own and Sarsfields v UCC in Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday both ended in draw games and must go again this Saturday at the same venue. The standard of hurling in both games was very good in front of a reasonable crowd. Our men Colm Barry and Niall O Leary played at full and centre back respectively in the Uí Mac Coille team and both had excellent games. Colm fielded from the clouds and commanded the square well. Niall started well put over a massive point and improved as the game went on for example a class move in the second half as he gathered the ball, drove out of defence and sent a mighty 30-yard pass to Ian Cahill who fetched and laid off to Brian Mulcahy and he planted a great goal for us. Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan were on the bench and while they did not get game time this writer believes that their introduction would have benefited the outcome too.

UCC were next up against Sarsfield and this was another cracker. The students had a master class of county hurlers on show but were pushed all the way by a dogged Sarsfields team who forced a deserved draw in the end. Our men Jack Barry, Colm Spillane and Anthony Spillane were all the starting fifteen and did well with Anthony scoring 0-1 and retiring in the 55^th minute due to a slight injury. Jack Barry was commanding between the posts and got down well to save a penalty. Colm Spillane really showed his All-Star potential with an hour of class hard hurling. So, it’s back to the drawing board next Saturday for another great evening’s hurling.

There was great excitement in the Abbey Tavern on Monday night as Ms Bridget Maye, Corrin, Fermoy scooped the Jackpot of €5, 200. Congratulations Bridget thanks for your great and continuous support and enjoy your winnings. We must also congratulate Dave Hegarty seller of the winning ticket. Dave has been a supporter and promoter of the Lotto since its inception so well-done Dave. The winning numbers were 6, 7, 11 and 27.

Fundraiser continues with Draw on Sunday October 7th

Castlelyons Adult Club, Juvenile Section and Camogie Club are promoting a major fund-raiser with the draw on Sunday 7^th October 2017. Each club offers tremendous social values of the clubs to the local community and there are increased numbers involved in all grades. A host of teams are still involved in the business end of competitions to date this year. The U21 hurlers after their East Cork win are now heading into the county section while Camogie and Juvenile teams are involved at various levels. The Juvenile Sections are now catering for a record number of juveniles and are keeping up the traditional quality and skill level of Castlelyons as Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy have represented Cork at the highest level in senior and minor hurling this year and, of course, lads involved with Uí Mac Coille and UCC panels all involved in the County Senior Quarter Finals. However, it costs a bit to run these clubs and the fundraising committee who are energetic and motoring well have €3,000 in prizes with tickets priced at €10 each. Your support is appreciated.
