Semi-Final Defeat for Castlelyons in U21 County Hurling Semi Final despite brave effort

Castlelyons 2-10 Inniscarra 3-13

Castlelyons took on Inniscarra in the county semi-final under 21 A hurling in Mallow last Saturday. The weather was ideal for hurling with a nice fresh breeze and the pitch in great condition which is a tribute to Mallow club as it is much used throughout the year. Thanks to those who came to support us as it was very good. It was a pity there was no programme available for a game of this status. After all it is only a sheet of paper and does involve a little bit of work but is so important in the promotion of our games.

Anyway, on to the game and we had a good 15 minutes hurling with Barry Murphy scoring 0-2 and Ian O Riordan 0-1 as Thomas O Connor was winning a lot for them in the half forward line but lucky for us shot three wides. However, he was also fouled, and Sean O Donoghue pointed and then scored a second as he was fouled himself. Then O Donoghue cut upfield parted to Eoin McCarthy who scored 0-1. This was a hectic bit of hurling with young referee Ciarán O Regan excellent on the whistle and it was 0-4 to 0-3 for Inniscarra at the end of the first quarter.

Then Niall O Leary scored a great point for us to draw level. Michael O Connell had 0-1 for them but Jack Barry cancelled that with 0-1 for us. We had a great opportunity as Niall O Leary sent in an almighty walloper of a free that hit the upright and came back into play. The chance was on for us to goal but not taken as Inniscarra cleared it up field and then a mistake in the backs left Sean O Donoghue in the clear. The U21 county star O Donoghue showed his class for them as he put it away for a 1-0. Niall O Leary and Barry Murphy going well in the middle again and Niall had 0-1 from a free. Our full forward line of Keith O Leary, Jack Barry and Andrew O Neill were trying hard against a hardy Inniscarra full line. Andrew O Neill got onto a great ball. He was fouled as he made for goal and Niall put over another 0-1 for us. A few unnecessary frees gave them a chance to hold their goal with a few frees but our full back line Ml Geary, Declan Varner and Redmond Walsh did well under pressure with Varner hurling all before him and at half time it was 1-7 to 0-7.

We came out of the traps hungry and Jack Barry who was having a right battle with Corán Lombard leading to both on the ground a bit. Anyway, Jack went to ground and was awarded a penalty which he clung it to bring us level. But back came Inniscarra and as their puck out broke favourable to Sean O Donoghue he banged in a goal for them again. With 15 minutes left on the clock they were up 3-9 to 1-7 but we fought our half forward line broke a lot of ball cut just could not get away for scores. David Morrison got a nasty injury and had to come off. Jack Barry and Niall O Leary had 0-1 apiece from frees. However, they were dominant and although Niall O Leary got in for a late goal it was not enough.

While we travelled with high hopes Inniscarra are a strong team and have played at a high level in minor over the last few years. Nevertheless, it was great to win East Cork and their efforts augurs well for the future. Well done to the management team of Donal Barry, James Maye, Larry Murphy, Darren Tobin and County senior medal winner Colm Barry.

Intermediate Hurling League Final in Lisgoold now gone to Saturday 11.11.17.

Well having regained our rightful grade of Premier Intermediate hurling for 2018 we will be judged on our hurling progress as we take on Watergrasshill in the Division 2 IHL final possibly in Lisgoold and now gone out to Saturday 11.11.17. We are also down to play Fr O Neill’s in the East Cork Intermediate championship final; the Abernethy Cup and this game is due to be played shortly. We have the East Cork Division 3 League final also down for decision and no word yet on a date. It would be great to end the season with a bit of silverware although it seems difficult to arrange any of the finals.
