Comprehensive win for Castlelyons in Football League Final.

Castlelyons 6-10 Carrigtwohill 2-7

Castlelyons played Carrigtwohill in the East Cork Division 3 Football League Final last Saturday on their home ground and came away with a comprehensive win and a rare football trophy. The game was played in dry conditions and despite the grass a little long there was a good bounce in the ball. Carrigtwohill were first to score 0-1. Our big men Colm Barry and Shane Moroney in the middle began to fetch a lot of ball and the forwards fed well off them as Eoin Maye and Ronan O Regan had 0-1 apiece and a great pass from Colm Barry set up Mike Spillane for a goal. Mike Spillane added 0-2 to put us 1-4 to 0-1 up with 15 minutes gone. The Ronan O Regan and Mike Spillane stretched our lead with 0-1 apiece but Carrigtwohill began to make a game of it as we lost our star midfielder Colm Barry through a hamstring injury. Our half back line Aidan O Sullivan, Tom Carroll and Liam Moroney were under pressure but done well. Carrig went on to score 1-2 but Mike Spillane managed 0-2 from frees to leave it 1-8 to 1-3 at half time.

Carrigtwohill began to come more into the game in the second half and we were on the back foot a bit, but the full back line Brian Carroll, Declan Varner, Colm O Neill worked hard, and Stephen Hickey was sound in goal. Darragh Lawlor managed a good point but Carrigtwohill were rampant 1-2 to leave it 1-9 to 2-4 with 15 minutes to go. Then Tom Carroll cleared a ball down to Ciaran McGann shot sent in a high ball that seemed to be going over the bar but dropped into the net as Jack Barry’s height may have unsighted the goalie. Alan Fenton had 0-1 and then Jack Barry who was really creating problems for Carrig shuck off a defender and lashed in a ‘Ronaldo’ style goal to put us on the road. We really hit a purple patch as up popped Brian ‘Dunny’ O Donovan and Mike Spillane and Jack Barry (again) for more goals and we ran out comprehensive winners 6-10 to 2-7.

We were missing some of the panel who could not make it on the day, etc, and well done to all the players who gave their support to the big ball during the year and especially to the selectors Donal O Leary, Tom Carroll and James Moroney who worked so hard with the team. We certainly were not far off the East Cork Championship and if there is a reasonable arrangement one game can complement the other as Kanturk have shown this year at a very high level. That legendary hurler and coach Justin McCarthy had a great rallying call ‘toughen up’ and football can surely compliment the camán. Castlelyons Abú.

Castlelyons GAA Annual General Meeting on Friday 24th November 2017 at 8pm.

The date for the 2017 Annual General Meeting is Friday 24th November @ 8pm. Meeting is open to all and will be held in the club bar. Motions for inclusion in the meeting and nominations for any position with the club need to be submitted in writing by Friday 17th November 2017 to Michael Barrett, Knock, Fermoy, Co. Cork or secretary.castlelyons.cork@gaa.ie Only full members are entitled to vote on motions discussed.

2018 is a most important season for Castlelyons as we enjoyed a lot of success at Premier Minor and U21 level a few year ago, went to the County Intermediate hurling final in 2013 with a young team, had minor success again last year and won East Cork in U21 this year before bowing out to Inniscarra in the semi Final. Football has improved. The Juvenile Club are working very hard and the feed to both codes is very good as there as outstanding players coming of age. However, we do need to get that winning mentality going again at adult level and close out the big games to achieve success. The AGM is a most important event for the Club in reviewing the last year and planning through setting up good structures. We should make every effort to attend. The Officers of the club look forward to seeing you on Friday 24th November.

Reardans SHC All-Star Team.

Congratulations to our men Colm Barry and Niall O Leary who were selected on the Cork senior hurling championship All- Star team for 2017. They will receive their awards in Reardans Bar in Washington Streeton Wednesday 6th December 2017 at 7 pm. Colm and Niall were ever present and outstanding this year with Imokilly in capturing the county title. These two me are battle hardened, massive hurlers and most suitable material for the blood and bandage. Hopefully they will get an opportunity of training with the county team over the next few months and we will all be watching with interest as the Rebels drive on to make a return to the high kings of hurling
