Castlelyons Players involved in Whitechurch GAA facilities opening.

There was a huge crowd at the official opening of the new facilities at Whitechurch GAA last Sunday evening. The facilities include two pitches, dressing rooms, two hurling walls, dressing rooms, tea rooms and some shared amenities with the Community Council. Whitechurch now a junior A side in the City Division side beat an All-Ireland winning Cork teams of '99/05 in a spirited display. Timmy McCarthy and Ciarán McGann took part in this game. That game was followed by a thriller involving the Cork and Kilkenny U21 teams and Niall O Leary took part in this game at full back. Senior officials from the Cork County Board were present and Chairperson Tracey Kennedy unveiled a plaque in honour of former chairman of the Club, the late Michael Downing who did so much for the GAA and the Community.

Tracey gave a wonderful talk outlining how Michaels’s tireless efforts in support of the club have been memorialised in the stone that now stands at the entrance to the grounds as she outlined how good facilities are vital to win the hearts and minds of the young for CLCG hoping that when they play with us they will stay with us. Incidentally the late Michael Downing and his family are relations of the Spillane family Ballyoran – all great Gaels.
