Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 23.7.18. 2018-07-24 23:22:00

Junior B Hurlers defeated in League.

A weakened Junior B team suffered a set back with a heavy defeat against a strong Erin’s Own outfit on Sunday morning last. Erin’s Own applied serious pressure in the first half and ran up a score of 2-11 to 0-5 by half time. The second half was much more competitive with Castlelyons making a game of it but not make any headway against their strong back line. Mark Spillane, Peter Roche, Shane O Sullivan and Brian O Donovan supplied our scores. A lot of our lads are on holidays with some to return from a summer in the USA so hopefully there are some better days left in us.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Mark Murphy, Liam Moroney, Padraig Murphy, Eoin O Neill, Conor McCarthy, Shane Flynn, Brian O Donovan, Peter Roche, Noel McAuliffe, Mark Spillane, Andrew O Neill, Ml John Dorgan, Shane O Sullivan, Chris Cotter. Subs: - Seamus Moroney and Larry Murphy.

Castlelyons Carnival.

The final preparations are being made for this year’s Carnival Running from Sunday 5th to Sunday 12th August. There is an Autumn evening in the Church with Cara O Sullivan and Dan Twomey, later the sound of the ‘60’s with Art Supple. The whole week is filled up with a Disco and an Active Retirement night, a Road Race, a BBQ culminating on Sunday with a taste of Cork & Waterford Crafts, Food and Health. Surely something for all and well done to the organising committee of the Community Council.

Intermediate team continue preparations for the championship.

Our intermediate hurlers are continuing preparations for their next championship outing not set until Cork are finished with the Senior and U21 All Ireland championships. However, we will be out in September. We have a few lads in both long and short-term injury and it’s the same story with holidays as we have some overseas. We played Douglas senior with a very weakened team and got a bit of a lesson early in the week, but it was a good outing for us and in fairness to management they are making a super effort with available resources and this may be our strength later.

Major Fundraising Draw.

At our recent club meeting Chairman Con Lawlor announced that Castlelyons Adult Club, Juvenile Club and Camogie Club are arranging a major fund-raising drive with a formal launch to be arranged soon. Cumann Lúthchleas Gael is part of the sporting fabric of our local local community. We have increased numbers of children involved in all grades of adult, juvenile and camogie sections and a host of teams are still involved in the business end of competitions. We continue to contribute to the rebels at the highest level as Colm Spillane and Nial O Leary having bagged Munster medals now contest all Ireland semi-finals with Cork in Senior and U21 hurling. However, it costs a bit to run these clubs and the fundraising committee who are energetic and motoring well are arranging a huge selection of prizes with tickets priced at €10 each. Your support will be appreciated, and it would be great to get involved if a member of any of the clubs.

All Roads lead to Croker.

Well its back to Croker this year and just seventy minutes away from making an All-Ireland Final. We have a chance to prove our worth and that we are well over that Déise set back in 2017. However, Limerick stand in our way and the bookies have it very tight with Cork slightest of favourites at ten to eleven and Limerick at eleven to ten. This game should be the proverbial cracker with great players on both sides. There is a seanfhocal is maith an t-anlann and t-ocras you can be sure Cork and our man Colm Spillane have plenty of it and we wish Colm and the team the very best.

The other semi-final on Saturday evening pits Clare against the 2017 champions Galway the bookies favourites for this years All Ireland and clear favourites to beat Clare as they are four to eleven and Clare are eleven to four. Nevertheless, the Banner are coming into form and will have a few supporters up there.

A word of caution in that there is some rain forecast with lower temperatures at the week end which could make roads a little slippy due to debris. There is huge roadworks between Junctions nine and ten up near Naas which will slow traffic travelling right down to and from Croker. Make sure you have water and fuel in the engine and give yourself plenty of time. A safe and enjoyable journey to all. Corcaigh Abú.

Votes of Sympathy.

Our Club wishes to extend sincere sympathy to the Coughlan, O Sullivan and Ryan families on the recent death of Donie Coughlan of Lismore and late of Kilbarry, Fermoy. Donie a kind, considerate and most knowledgeable hurling man coached Castlelyons to win our first East Cork JAHC in 38 years when we made the big breakthrough in 1993. He was always a great supporter of our club and a friend that many a player could talk with about his game and form. Sincere sympathy also to the Noonan Family Kilmagner on the recent death of Jackie Noonan. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go léir.
