Public Meeting - Consultation on Club Development

Thursday 30th January @ 7.30pm in the Centre.

Castlelyons has experienced outstanding success on the playing fields over the years.  We have ended the decade with the purchase of long desired extra land.  We are very fortunate to acquire such lands bordering our present facilities.  A sincere thanks to the landowners and we are really gratified to benefactors who have shown belief in our vision.

Our Club has been the cornerstone of the Parish throughout the years as it has touched so many households from juvenile up to adult grade. We are now coming together as a larger family in the name of sport and recreation as we support our children in commencing their sporting careers.  The legacy of our past generation has seen the existing facilities ideally located in the centre of both the Parish and the Village of Castlelyons.

The future depends on what we do in the present, so we are now embarking on consultation and planning with a view to the provision of appropriate facilities for all our players, patrons, old and young, in the adult, camogie, juvenile clubs.  We require a quality development plan which will maximize the use of current facilities and extra lands.  This is a serious challenge in the preparation of such development plan that suits the community, also the costing, funding and placing such a plan on a phased basis.

A steering committee drawn from the adult, camogie and juvenile clubs were recently ratified by these clubs and Mr Jerry Healy has since taken up as chair of this committee.   There will be a Public Meeting on Thursday 30th January at 7.30 pm in the Centre with a view to harvesting the views of the community and formulating a consensus on an overall Development Plan.  Accordingly, all members and non-members and anyone in the community are welcome to attend. While the meeting will be facilitated by independent person(s) it is your views that are important as it is your facility and a legacy for the parish community in years to come.

The Chair of the steering committee, Jerry Healy, is placing a serious emphasis on this public consultative meeting as this is the time to contribute and let your views be heard. He is asking for assistance in planning and funding arrangements for this development.  He says, “there is a tradition of outstanding community cooperation in Castlelyons so together let’s be part of this latest project and provide our Parish with the best facilities into the future”.   Táimid ar fad aontaithe le Gearóid mar ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.

Castlelyons in Red FM Division Two Cork Hurling League for 2020

Well folks the start of the GAA season is almost upon us and Cork have produced the hurling leagues for 2020. Castlelyons are placed in the Red FM Division Two Hurling League with Senior A and B teams. This promises to be a cracker of a competition and certainly one with a competitive edge to it. Well done to Kevin O Donovan, Secretary and the CCC they have done a studious ability breakdown of the teams. Clubs may wish for higher or lower leagues, but it is our business to survive among big teams in Division Two. Our first game is away to Ballyhea, a top-grade senior team, on Sunday 16th February. So, let’s get training and get on with it for 2020

Cork Intermediate Hurling Championship - Cork Master Fixture Plan 2020

The Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship; Castlelyons v Blackrock is fixed for weekend of 19th April 2020. On the same weekend Blackrock are fixed to play Erin’s Own in the senior championship.  This will be a very tough assignment for Castlelyons as Blackrock have a huge panel with many good hurlers away and while unable to commit to senior stuff, they are giving it all to the intermediate. They are battle hardened having contested the last two Intermediate Finals.  They lost 2-16 to 1-15 to Ballincollig in 2018 and defeated a very good Cloughduv side 0-15 to 1-10 to take the title and win promotion in 2018.  However, our lads are commencing training for the League shortly and should be in good shape for the championship too.

Harty Cup Quarter Final CBC 1-13 St Colman’s 1-12.

The Felix Sarsfield Memorial Pitch on the ‘Hill was in great condition and the weather on a dry and crisp January afternoon for this encounter. It was top Harty hurling all the way in a game of fine margins before a huge crowd. Christians were clinical in their hurling especially free taking and, of course got the goal that mattered early in the first half to open a five-point lead at the short whistle. Jack Cahalane done very well for them with 0-9 and Darragh Flynn had 0-7 over the hour for Colman’s.  They second half was close as Colman’s did a power of hurling and went for home with a goal towards the end but could not get a leveler. Tough luck on the lads as they are a young team, and will no doubt be serious contenders again next year.   Castlelyons patrons were well pleased with our own man Leon Doocey.  He had an outstanding game over the hour both at wing forward in the first half and centre back in the second half.  Both Anthony and Colm Spillane were involved in coaching the team too.d 0-7 over the hour for St Colmans. Colmans had a safe goalie in Cian Hogan and Ciaran O Brian hurled a power of ball. However, Castlelyons folk will be very pleased with the form of Leon Doocey who had an excellent game. He was in the half forward line in the first half, won the dirty ball and set up scores. He played centre back in the second half and did a power of hurling. Indeed all the St Colmans boys gave it everything. They are a young team and will be there next year but tough luck lads as ye were so near. Well done to Colm and Anthony Spillane who were involved with the team as they prepare for the coming season themselves

All Ireland Club Finals in Croke Park on Saturday.

Presently there is a roaring debate of elitism in our games.   Overemphasis on county at the expense club players.  Well for the clubs of Russell Rovers and Fr O Neills as its all roads to Croke Park the dream of all players and clubs.  This Saturday they contest the Junior and Intermediate All Ireland Club Finals in the sacred sod.  Its Russell Rovers versus Conahy Rovers of Kilkenny play and Father O Neills versus Tullaroan of Kilkenny.  They are formidable opponents.   Conahy Rovers did win the Junior All Ireland back in 2008 and is the home club of the great Nicky Brennan. Tullaroan a former strong senior club and home club of Padraig and Tommy Walsh who have eleven all Ireland between them.  It may be the Old Guard Cork versus Kilkenny and no doubt this will bring an extra edge to the games.  It is an outstanding achievement and personal recognition for Russel Rovers and Fr O Neill’s to get to the finals.   They have both played an excellent brand of hurling all year with some stars and a massive team ethic and are well capable of making it a double for East Cork.  From all in Castlelyons we wish them the very best. Uí Mac Coille Abú.

Representation on County and Fitzgibbon Cup Teams.

Colm Spillane has had his first outing with Cork in over eighteen months as he is making a return to fitness again after a series of injury.  He played at corner back for the Rebels against Limerick in the Coop Stores Munster League Final in Limerick on Saturday night.  However, no luck for Colm as a weakened Cork team got a bit of a trimming.  There was better luck for Niall O Leary with UCC as they won both the Canon O Brien Trophy in a game versus Cork and advanced in the Fitzgibbon Cup by defeating NUIG away in Galway on Sunday.  UCC are a very strong outfit and Niall is doing well at wing back for them so he could be en route to a second Fitzgibbon medal.  We wish both lads well and hope to have them back again in the Castlelyons colours as they are so important to the club.

Congrats to Castlelyons Camogie girls Munster and All Ireland Medal winners.

Congrats and well done to Lucy McNulty and Leah Hallihan, Castlelyons who were presented with Munster and All Ireland Under 16 medals and Leah received an All-Ireland U15 Medal.  This is a great honour for the girls, their club and county.
