Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 17.2.20 2020-02-18 18:47:00

Cheltenham Preview 2020 in Castlelyons.

Castlelyons GAA are holding a Cheltenham Preview in the Pedlars Rock on Friday 28th February at 8.30pm.  There is a top-class local line up in the Panel.  We have Jimmy Mangan, Johnny Barry and Ciarán Hennessy and MC Patrick Mulcahy. There is a raffle and auction on the night.  A great night ensured with plenty craic agus ól and right tips in your pocket heading for the races all for an admission of just €10 and your support is appreciated.  See you then.

Red FM Division Two Hurling League.

Red FM Radio was busy on Sunday busy reporting on the effects of Storm Dennis on Sunday as most of local and national games were called off.  Castlelyons were due to have their first game away to Ballyhea on last Saturday but it was called off too and is now re fixed for Saturday the 29th February away in Ballyhea.

We are now fixed to play a Red FM Decision 2 hurling league game versus Bandon at home in Castlelyons at 11.30am this Sunday 23rd February 2020. Our pitch surrounds are in dire need of a clean-up for this game and like so many other fields it is a bit damp.

Virgin Media One had a discussion on Monday night about playing GAA games so early in the year from a county perspective.  It is the same with the club games as I said last week, we had club games starting in mid-March, then moved to end of February and now its full throttle in early February.  But the question must be asked is this hurling or football weather.

Under 21 Football

Our Under 21 footballers now play Carrigtwohill away in Carrigtwohill on Friday 21st February at 7.30pm. Then on Saturday 29th February they are playing Cloyne at 2.30pm.  The Cloyne game is a re fixture as it was already deferred due to the weather. It is noted that the hurlers are playing on the 29th, the same day, also so there need to be some joined up thinking here.

Fitzgibbon Cup Final 2020.

This year’s final was held in DCU Grounds Dublin last Wednesday. University College Cork defeated D J Carey’s IT Carlow by 0-18 to 2-11 in a thriller.  The UCC side came from 0-6 down to make it two in a row.  This means a second medal for our own man Niall O Leary who played at right back. A second Castlelyons man Barry Murphy was on the IT Carlow panel and while not used during the game he will have a runner’s up medal.

It was interesting that there were nine Cork men, three Tipperary men, two Limerick men on the team all top county hurlers. However, the star of the show was a Kerry man, namely Shane Conway, who scored 0-4 towards the end to take UCC over the line by just one point.  He scored 0-9 in total. His manager said that Conway’s hurling brain is just so far ahead of most guys, his skill, his free-taking kept them in the match. He did it all over the pitch, he’s outstanding and called him the Lionel Messi of hurling. Massive stuff and I see he had an outstanding game for Kerry against Meath last Sunday again.  Will he come over the border!

Storm Dinny takes over from third race on at Knockanard in P2Ps

The Knockanard Point to Point Races were on last Sunday and while we were all looking forward to a great day Storm Dinny took centre stage and the races came a cropper midway.  One must feel sorry for the organisers as it takes so much work to get the day organised.  Our own club had a good bit of work done also as we were full go to in the refreshment tent after a solid morning’s work when they were called off. They say a positive attitude can turn a storm into a sprinkle and this must be said of all our volunteers who worked so well making cakes and sandwiches in the morning and working during the day.  Thanks to all.

Results of Weekly Lotto Draw.

Our weekly club lotto was held in the Pedlar’s Rock on Monday night the 14th February and the numbers drawn were 6, 11, 17 and 28. There was no winner. There were tight Lucky Dip winners as follows: - Allison, Colman O Flynn Jnr, Michelle Tobin, John Milward, Declan Whelan, Larry Murphy, O Donovan Family and Jim Barry

Next week’s draw will be held on Monday 24th February at 9.30pm in the Peddlers. The Jackpot is still a massive €20,000 so don’t forget your ticket for next week.  The results of the Club Lotto are published on both the Avondhu and social media.  Thanks to all our Lotto players who support us each week as without you we would not be able to invest in the future of our club. Please advise your friends that they can play our Lotto Online or purchase tickets from the usual outlets.

Club Membership.

A last call for tidy up in club membership.  Payment is excellent to date this year and a big thanks to our hurling management who have done a promotion and collection.  As we swing int action for the new season in both Under 21 and intermediate grades it is assumed that all players are paid up. But if you’re a player and /or patron who has not paid to date please attend you can fix up with Donal Barry Treasurer and /or James Maye Registration Officer, or any of the hurling management team.

Juvenile Registration evening.

Great to see a huge crowd of juveniles with their parents registering for the coming year.  All the officers and managers of the teams were present and promoting Cuman Lúthchleas Gael.  It works both ways while good for the game it is good for the juveniles and I don’t know did Franklin D Roosevelt every see hurling or football but he once said we cannot always build the future for our youth but build our youth for our future.  Well done all.

Camogie Presentation Evening.

The Camogie Club are holding a Presentation Evening in the Pedlar’s Rock between 5pm and 7pm on Saturday 22nd February from 5pm to 7pm.  There are medal and trophies won during the year to be presented from U13 to minor grades and Niall O Leary is the guest of honour.  Refreshments and all welcome.

Castlelyons Community Centre closes for renovation and modernisation.

Well our Centre has closed its doors for renovation and modernisation until the first week of June. Walls and ceilings are being insulated with a new electrical system, alterations to ladies and gents’ rooms, new kitchen, new suite of furniture including tables and chairs and the place will be user friendly in meeting the needs of the disabled.  Well done to the committee led by Matt Hegarty have raised substantial finances, sought and acquired grants and received a donation from an exceptional benefactor.  Also, thanks to the volunteers who cleaned up and out the place on Monday night in preparation for the builders.  Meetings meanwhile will be held in the Bar area.

Cork hurlers weather the Storm.

Cork went to Mullingar to take on Westmeath in the Allianz hurling league and were most fortunate with a win 3-12 to 1-14.  Patrick Horgan was the top man again scoring 2-8.  Castlelyons man Colm Spillane played the full game at corner back and had a sound game.  Niall O Leary was also called up for the game but not used as he had the Fitzgibbon Cup final midweek.  Limerick head the league table with four points from two games and Cork are mid table with four points from three games.  So next Sunday will be a vital game for Cork as they take on the Treaty men at home in the new sod of the Páirc.  This game is down for 2pm so get behind the Rebels as it should be a cracker.

Imokilly Victory Dinner.

East Cork Division are holding a victory dinner on Friday 6th March at 8pm in the Midleton Park Hotel.  Medals will be presented to our Imokilly hurlers who took the 2019 senior hurling championship and three in a row. Tickets are €30 each and can be had from any member of the Executive.

This year Imokilly will play 2/3 matches as follows in the Senior Football Championship and depending on the results could progress further in the championship: - Wednesday 27th May - Imokilly v Beara. Wednesday 3rd June - Imokilly v Avondhu. Wednesday 10th June - Winner group 1 v Runner up group 2 and Winner Up group 2 v Runner up group 1.
