Return of Castlelyons GAA Weekly Lotto Draw.
It was decided at our recent meeting to hold our weekly lotto again on Monday 20th July in the Community Centre at 9.30.pm. Thanks to many of our collectors and those who run the draw as they are all back again after some months cocooning. Tickets are available from the usual outlets, sellers and Online at just €2 each. Our Jackpot is €20,000 with eight Lucky Dip Prizes of €20 each. Go on have a cut of the 20,000 for just €2 and have a good summer. Thanks for your support in the past and we look forward to it in the future.
Intermediate Hurling Challenge.
Castlelyons 3 – 20 Youghal 3-18
It was return to duty on Friday evening as our intermediate hurlers took on Youghal in Páirc an tAthair Peadar at 8pm. Our pitches are busy already these days and thanks to Brendan Hallihan manager of the U16 who moved up to Leahy’s Field to facilitate an early gathering of both teams. The teams and a big crowd from both Youghal and Castlelyons showing a massive appetite for the game streamed in early and it was a great turn out for a challenge. We fielded a hand outfit missing a few but it was the same with Youghal. We started well with points from Niall O Leary and Anthony Spillane. But Youghal tacked on three in a row and got into the game. Alan Fenton, Anthony Spillane, and Niall O Leary showed and scoring again but Youghal were going well keeping in touch and managed to put together another three points in a row when Anthony Spillane had a goal. Keith O Leary, Leon Doocey began to go well, and David Morrison got a good goal. The half time score was Youghal 1-11 Castlelyons 2-8.
Castlelyons had a better second half as Mike Spillane made a big contribution of 1-6 (0-4 frees), Niall O Leary continued fine form at centre back. Eoin Maye and Barry Murphy done well in the middle too as Leon Doocey impressed over the hour. At the back even our goalie got in on the act for 0-1 and was active. While our backs found James O Mahony and Brett Maloney tough going they done well as Cian O leary, Liam Maloney Peter Roche held out well in the full back line. Jamie O Leary went well on the right wing while Colm O Neill really impressed as he had a battle royal with Youghal big gun James O Mahony. John Kirby, Midleton was the referee on the evening and did a good job as he looked fit and covered ground while explaining with clarity the reason for the free.
Overall, our management of Ciaran McGann, Peter Murphy and Sean Kenny and Johnny Crowley and Brendan Hoare can be reasonable satisfied as it was our first outing with a while. However, it was Youghal’s first over jumps with a while too and I seen their class goalie Richie Cunningham on the line with Cork stalwart Bill Cooper. In fact, their selector Seanie Ring did mention they were trying out a few lads. Our first championship is just under a month away against Blackrock always a stern outfit. We have a few more challenge games and it is good that all know there is room for improvement and championship day is the time to hit form so best of luck.

Castlelyons 2-17 Araglen 2-17.
Well it was out to Araglen on Saturday evening to play the locals in a challenge game. What a lovely setting even if there was a cold breeze blowing down the Glen. Great hurling men out there too as I spoke with Mick Fitzgerald, famous Hurley Maker, Mick Lyons present member of Cork County Board, Bill Russell, John Ahern, John O Brien and Eoin Hickey their trainer who all spoke of their club with some pride and they are putting in dugouts and a walkway. Again, like in Castlelyons the evening before there was a huge crowd from Araglen and Castlelyons at the game. The game was a cracker all through as it was hard fought all over the place. Araglen playing against the wind were first to score but Dunny and Chris Cotter had two points for us. Their centre forward Oisin Hickey a good hurler was having a strong battle with Shane Fenton and was sharp from frees. Tom Kenneally a former Avondhu player was inside at full forward was strong too and had a right battle with Liam Maloney. Ronan O Regan going well with Dunny in the centre had a point as had Shane Flynn 0-1 and Ronan Bransfield had 0-2. Araglen kept in touch as Ciaran McGann had 1-1 with the goal from a 21-yard free. The half time score was 1-8 to 1-9.
Araglen started the second half well with two points as Chris Cotter and Ronan O Regan had scores for us. Then came the score of the game as James Kearney, a young hurler with great potential and playing well had moved in about the full line. A high ball came in and Canning like he doubled on it with conviction for a great goal. Araglen with goalie David Brown driving puckouts down with the wind kept up the pressure and had three points with Hickey at centre back and Russel at full back keeping a tight rain on our lads. Conor McCarthy had a boomer of a point from a free for us and Ciarán McGann, Alan O Regan and Ronan Fenton had points. Ronan Bransfield has transferred back to us from Dublin this year and he looked fit with plenty of hurling throughout the game. Obviously, he is a man who has kept himself in good shape and could be a real asset to the club this year. Coran Lawlor, John Healy and Liam Moroney did well in the full back line while Dave Kenny was sound in goal. Cian O Leary after playing the night before came on again in Araglen and is certainly getting up to speed after some time in Dublin. A man who gives it all in work and play as he is an accountant and now working from home this year, so it is to our advantage. Junior B teams throw up interesting statistics at times and eighteen-year-old Declan Morrison who came on and done well is twenty-two years younger than full forward Ciarán McGann now turned forty and the last connection with our former senior team. The final score was 2-17 to 2-15 in our favour and overall, this was a most worthwhile outing. Shane O Donoghue, Mitchelstown was on the whistle and did a good job as he left the game flow and left local battle settle down.

Please note that the Club is replacing some Fencing on the boundary of the main pitch. At this time, it is a work in progress and will be finished as soon as possible. However, all home teams should use the near dugout and do the warmups parallel to this boundary area for the time being. We must respect our neighbours and keep the place tidy please. Team managements will give further instructions.
Castlelyons pull out of East Cork Junior Football Championship.
Three teams have pulled out of the East Cork East junior football championship and this includes Castlelyons. The championship was changed to a straight knockout with the first round being played on the 24th July just a week before the premier intermediate hurling championship. This is a pity as we are a hurling club to but due to the short year that is in it is hard to keep all going. We are also a feeding club to both the County and Imokilly as we have Colm Spillane and Niall O Leary in a due role with cork and Imokilly. We then have a number of other lads involved with Imokilly as well in the championship most notable Colm Barry who is making his way back to full fitness after surgery. On the Under 21 front in hurling and football these games will be played later in the year.
Castlelyons GAA Club receive Mayor’s Recognition.
The Club has received a recognition certificate from the County Mayor Ian Doyle for admirable service to the people during the Covid-19 global pandemic crises. This is for the level of voluntary work, kindness and contribution to the well being of our citizens during this difficult time. No need to put down names as people know who helped out from the adult, juvenile and camogie clubs. Thanks, and well done. Outside of that special thanks to our Parish Priest Fr Gerard Coleman and Fr Marek who celebrated mass all during the Pandemic until limited crowds were allowed this weekend. A big thanks you to Paul Murphy, his wife Catherine and their daughter Claire who worked hard on recording the Sunday masses going live on Facebook with it. Finally, a big thank you to our local funeral director James Ronayne and staff who have done outstanding work in helping families grieve and memorialise their loved ones. James used many creative ways to go the extra mile in the utilisation of various ways in social distancing. James also helped out the vulnerable in many ways too so thanks James in your inspired work. But Covid-19 not over yet so tabhair aire.
