Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 27.7.20. 2020-07-30 11:54:00

Win for Castlelyons in Rebel Óg East Minor Hurling Championship.

Castlelyons 2-19 Bride Rovers 1-21.

At the gate of Páirc an tAthair Peadar last Tuesday evening we should have that song "Hard Times" blaring with a total of just 200 tickets available to the locals and Rathcormac people for the minor hurling championship game between Castlelyons and Bride Rovers.  However, as the game started for those present it was another part of that song "lets pause in life’s pleasure" that came to mind as the hurling all through was outstanding. Throughout the game it was score for score with Castlelyons getting there by 0-1 almost on the full whistle to the delight of the home support.

We started reasonable and Rovers applied pressure from the start putting over some scores from play and Adam Hayes was good on the frees.  Leon Doocey had 0-1 and Colm McCarthy began to put over all available frees for us.  We were 0-7 to 0-6 at the water break. Shortly after the restart our full forward Darragh Spillane banged in a goal to put a bit of daylight between the teams for the first time.  But the Rover hit back as Adam Hayes pointed some frees. Nicky Kelleher had 0-2 from play, with Conor Hazelwood and Ronan O Connell 0-1 apiece.  Killian Tobin was hurling very well at midfield and put over 0-1 for the Rovers while we replied with points from Leon Doocey and Colm McCarthy to leave it 0-14 to 1-9 at half time to the Rovers.

Playing towards the Abbey for the second half  Rovers were first to score but we upped our game and Leon Shanahan had 0-1 for us and Colm McCarthy proceeded to take us through the art and craft of free taking as he put them over from all over the place showing the importance of a free taker while also a big contribution to general play and got great help from Leon Shanahan and Kass Kouwenberg in the half line.  Gavin O Neill done very well in goals and hit some good puckouts. Castlelyons got stuck in with tough battles all over the place as our full back Declan Morrison had his hands full with Ed Cashman but done well and Ian Ryan and Colie O’Flynn gave him great support.  The half back line of Matthew Rossiter, Declan Geary and Stephen Casey tightened on their men and improved their game in the second half. Leon Doocey and Evan Lenihan had some battle with Tomas Mocak, and Killian Buckley and came good too.  They needed to because Ronan O Connell, Adam Hayes Davy Barry, and John Buckley are good players for the Rovers.  The full line of Oscar Hallihan, Darragh Spillane and Brian Spillane beavered away all through the game and were rewarded again as Oscar Hallihan poached our second goal.  We were glad to hit the watercooler with the scores level at 2-15 to 1-18 but no doubt the chat was heated and serious during that short break.  There was some mighty hurling from both sides after the restart as we exchanged scores, but Killian Tobin hit over a long range free to put the Rover 0-1 up with the full whistle due.  Then Leon Shanahan broke up the wing with speed and put over a great equaliser.  Then in the last seconds Colm McCarthy swung the game in our favour as he put over the winner from a free and his thirteen point in total giving us victory by the narrowest of margins 2-19 to 1-21.

Well done to both teams on a great show and congrats to our lads on their victory but as this is in league format, we may have to do it all again.  Also, a special thanks to referee Jim Hennessey who came with umpires and let the game flow to enjoyment of all.

Team: Gavin O Neill, Ian Ryan, Declan Morrison, Colie O’Flynn, Matthew Rossiter, Declan Geary, Stephen Casey, Leon Doocey, Evan Lenihan, Kass Kouwenberg, Colm McCarthy, Leon Shanahan, Oscar Hallihan, Darragh Spillane, and Brian Spillane. Premier Intermediate Championship Game down for Lisgoold on Sunday 2.8.20

We are down to meet Blackrock in the first round of the premier intermediate hurling championship in Lisgoold next Sunday evening 2.8.20 at 7pm. The lads have trained well and played some tough challenge games.  However, we are shipping a number of injuries and while the hope is that they will have cleared up a full panel is needed as this is the real deal. We are in a league set up with two going forward and play Blackrock, Blarney and Inniscarra.  Blarney are hot favourites at three to one to win out the PIHC this year and we know what Inniscarra did to us last year as despite injuries to their top men and a red card they took us 0-23 to 0-18 so it is imperative that we go all out on Sunday evening.

Blackrock are another tough side as over the last few years they showed that their mettle as they were unlucky in the 2018 final in just losing out to Ballincollig.  They made amends in 2019 blazing their way to the final by defeating teams like Tracton, Kilbrittan, Aghabullogue and a favoured Cloughduv in the final.  They also won the league last year and Rockies generally do no lack confidence bred over a long and proud history. A former Cork captain has tipped Blackrock as an outside fancy for the senior this year as they had six players going to the USA, but they did not go so they have a big selection.  It will take a supreme effort to take the day, but we have trained well, and if our lads play to potential we are in with a right chance.  Best of luck to the team and management as we hope for a good evening’s hurling.

Premier Intermediate Championship Game versus Blackrock is All -Ticket.

There will be a limited number of tickets available for the PIHC game on Sunday evening for distribution to our members.  This will be done by a draw on Thursday evening so if you are a member of the Club and wish to include your name please contact our secretary Michael Barrett as soon as possible. For the safe operation of our games and wellbeing it is imperative that no-one turns up without the appropriate ticket.

This is due to the new Cork County Board online ticketing system rolled out to safeguard all involved in county championship games for 2020. it will ensure minimal contact, safe regulation of numbers at venues and ease of contact tracing in the event of a Covid-19 case.  It is operated by Ticketmaster and Universe system and there is a limit of 200 attendance which includes players, officials, stewards, host club members and spectators the lot. This is so disappointing for so many patrons and our own supporters who have followed over the years both to juvenile, challenge games all over the place and support our Lotto. This will be reviewed again on the 11th August and hopefully Cumann Lúthchleas Gael will be allowed greater numbers at their games.

Progress with Community Centre Renovation.

Recent meetings between the GAA and Community Centre Committee have revealed that renovations to the Centre are imminent.  Hopefully, the rear of the building that is the Bar area, Squash area and other rooms will be refurbished as part of our development. There are a number of technical queries and costings and if suitable these will be presented to the Executive and with agreement work should commence in the near future.

A number of new sponsors for Cork GAA.

Cork GAA have announced Dairygold Co-Op Superstores as the title sponsor of the Cork County Hurling Championships, the Bons Secours Hospital as title sponsors for the Cork Football Championships and entered into a three-year deal on streaming the games with the Irish Examiner.   Exciting days ahead, great to see such famous groups partner with Cork GAA. Well done to those involved for making it happen.  We look forward to the games and surely, they will ease those turbulent and stressful times of the last few months
