Castlelyons defeated by Ballincollig in Red FM League Cup Final.

Castlelyons travelled to Riverstown on Saturday evening to play Ballincollig in the Red FM League Cup Division 4 Final at Riverstown.   The evening was ideal for hurling with just a slight breeze and Willie Wallis doing a good on the whistle.  We started well but as they say goals win matches and Ballincollig got three of them while we failed to rise the green flag and they ran out winners 2-18 to 0-22. Having come through their group as runners up and defeated Watergrasshill in the semi-final we were expecting a result but the absence of some lads through injury especially Leo Sexton and Barry Murphy plus our county men Niall O’Leary and Colm Spillane was a loss to our panel on the evening.  

We set up well at the start and Colm Barry quelled a lot of Ballincollig attacks.  We put up good ball to our forwards as Leo Dooney, Dave Morrison, Anthony Spillane James Kearney, and Alan Fenton all had scores to put us 0-7 to 0-3 up.  Ballincollig kept the scoreboard ticking and had a few unanswered points before to leave it 0-7 to 0-5 at the water break.  After the water break Alan Fenton stuck over three frees and a sixty-five as Ballincollig began to take us on more especially around the middle third. It ended eleven points apiece at half time.  We started the second half well again with points from A Fenton, E Maye, and A Spillane but Ballincollig got inside very handy and gave our goalie no chance with a goal.  We managed to hold them but when they got another goal and then a fortuitous goal from seventy yards free our lads lost concentration for a while. We did fight gamely but Ballincollig held out for a five-point win.   It was a learning exercise for the championship as we must cut out elementary mistakes and hold concentration for the duration of the game.  Ballincollig are a good side and will punish any lapses. It would be nice to win the final but there may be better days ahead and well done to all the lads and the mentors for their efforts to date.

Rebels march on to All Ireland Final with a strong backing from Castlelyons.

We said last week the Rebels were flying for their game with Kilkenny.   Well although they got a close call, they were outstanding all through in a cracking 100 minutes of hurling.  Victory over Kilkenny does not come too often.  Congratulations and well done to Kieran Kingston and his men and we wish them the best in the final.  Great to see Niall O Leary have another stormer at corner back.  Colm Spillane was not called on from the bench this time and Ian O Connell of neighbouring St Catherines was the maor camán and valued members of the backroom team.  Congrats all and what an experience to get to the Final.   The opposition is the dream team Limerick who are overwhelming favourites at two to seven with Cork are ten to three. Nevertheless, by the time Limerick are done with the Rebel infantry Liam McCarthy could be heading down the motorway towards the Lee. An interesting two weeks to go and more later.

Fermoy 3-17 Castlelyons 1-21.

This game was played in Páirc Mac Gearailt before a huge crowd.  Local rivalries are good, and we were treated to an outstanding game of hurling.  The evening was good, the pitch was pristine, and the referee added to the mix with one or two disputed decisions from a Castlelyons perspective.  But sure, that happens at the highest level, and we must except that referees do their best in the circumstances.  We can assist in games by doing umpire and / or linesman and it would be a great start for us as we do not have a referee in our Club.  But back to a cracker of a game.  Castlelyons started very well and put a few points on the board through Colm McCarthy, Jack Cremin and Paddy Dooley.  However, Fermoy came alive and Brendan Daly, a neat forward, got in for a good Fermoy goal.  Then we were lucky we did not fall further behind as Tiernan Mahon had two right shots on goal excellently saved by our goalie Aaron Fenton.  Fenton was busy again to keep Fermoy out, but we settled to lead at the first water break 0-7 to 1-3. On the resumption there was some great matchups with Cas Kwoenberg at centre forward and his direct opponent Liam Cronin, also Oscar Hallihan at full forward and his marker Ronan O Brien.  Cas and Oscar managed to do well at times.  Colm McCarthy was our go too man and young players Jack Cremin, Olan Lenehan and Paddy Dooley knew that as they found him with good passes, and he obliged with points.  Tiernan Mahon who hits that sliotar hard did get in for a goal for Fermoy.  It was all square at half time at 0-11 to 2-5.

The second half commenced with some quality hurling and Colm McCarthy pointed a ’65.  Fermoy had a sweet hurler around the middle third namely Killian Fitzpatrick and he was doing a lot of damage.  We lacked Dara Spillane in this sector who was unavailable.  But Colm McCarthy and Oscar kept the scoreboard ticking for us and Michael Griffin put over a good point to leave us one up at the last water break 2-9 to 0-16. We resumed with points from Colm and Oscar to go ahead and looking good.  There was a racket over a controversial free to Fermoy but no need for upset as the free was put wide anyway and Colm banged over two more for us one a lovey pass from Jack Cremin and the other a free. Oscar Hallihan came to a good ball in from Paddy Dooley turned and banged in a great goal.  But Fermoy were not gone away as Fitzpatrick put over a monster free, Sherwood, Daly and Mahon had points for them too while Colm McCarthy had another for us.  Then disaster for us in injury time as Fermoy got in for a well worked but killer goal from, I think, Brendan Daly. Castlelyons rallied and Jack Cremin had a point, but Fermoy held for a two-point victory in a mighty game.

There was a draw on Tuesday 3.8.21 (due to Monday Bank Holiday) and the numbers drawn were 2, 5, 16 and 18. There was no winner, of a Jackpot of €14,800. Spinathon weekend and outstanding success.

The Spinathon and Funathon Weekend just gone by proved outstanding.  Held in ideal weather conditions it really drew the local community.  It was a celebratory event as participants from all over cycled to music arranged by Paul Murphy. There were cakes and goodies from Lady Jane and coffee brewed by Coffee Beo. Further down the road on Saturday morning we also had cyclists led by Timmy McCarthy, Donal O Brien, Cathy and Assumpta with music from Derek of Crystal Swing. A new drive for fitness remains as so many went on stationary bikes kindly donated for the Spinathon by Max Fitness & Sports Therapy Rathcormac. 

Thanks to all who donated on the days and to those who took sponsorship cards.  Well done to our organising committee from the GAA and Camogie clubs plus Community Centre Committee namely Michael Barrett, Pamela McCarthy John McCarthy, Michelle Fenton Kieran Barrett, John Coleman, Helen Hussey, and David Beausang while many managers arranged fund events for their teams. Also, to Metrology Systems Ltd who provided the sponsorship. There will be soul-searching and heavy lifting into the future with the proposed development of the recently acquired land.  But last weekend proved one thing for sure and that is if you want to go quickly go alone but if you want to go far go together.  Castlelyons needs that communal effect and last weekend was a step in the right direction.  Congratulations and thanks to all for a great weekend.

Castlelyons GAA Extraordinary General Meeting Saturday 28.8.21 at 5.30pm

Since the purchase of extra lands Castlelyons have worked hard at researching funding including capital sports grants, viewing other club layouts, doing all the preparatory work on planning permission which is now well advanced. The Steering Group have prepared a Development Plan with some options.  It was decided at the last monthly meeting to hold an EGM on Saturday August 28^th at 5.30pm to present and discuss this development plan.  This will give members an opportunity of deciding the best way forward and it is important there is a full attendance.

Congratulations to Lisgoold.

Congratulations to our near neighbours Lisgoold who won their first ever Junior A County Hurling Championship title with a comprehensive win over Harbour Rovers in Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday.  This is a massive boost for a Club who have put in great work in development of their grounds and coaching young players in recent years.
