Celebrating the Double – Great Days – looking to the future.

"Long-serving county secretary Frank Murphy wasn’t gazing into a crystal ball when he sat down to prepare his annual report for the 1989 County Board Convention.  And, he wasn’t so bold as to predict that the county could achieve the All-Ireland double the following year. But, he suggested the feat was not impossible.

The context was a reminder that in 1990 they would be celebrating the centenary of the twin All-Ireland victories of Aghabullogue in hurling and Midleton in football in 1890.

Pointing out that the two clubs had plans in train to commemorate the event, he wrote: “it would be most appropriate that the county as a whole would suitably mark the occasion.

â€œIt is an historic fact that our only dual All-Ireland senior successes in the one season were secured in 1890. No county has achieved this feat in ‘this century’... Perhaps we could inspire our senior footballers and hurlers to mark the centenary of our winning of our first All-Irelands in the most fitting way possible by bringing back to Leeside next year both the Sam Maguire and Liam McCarthy Cups."

Frank said at the Convention “It is a mighty assignment but not an unattainable dream.” And it came to pass the following year in 1990

What about 2016 for Cork

Well the County Football Management Teams are in place for all teams and we look forward to a great year. Who will be the first winners in Páirc Uí Chaoimh in 2017?

Castlelyons over the last 25 years - Great Days

Castlelyons have had a roller coaster of outstanding success during the last 25 years winning Junior and Intermediate County Finals. We contested a county senior semi final and defeated by Blackrock.  We won a U21 County hurling final and were narrowly defeated by the mighty Blackrock in a Premier Minor Final. We had a great victory in the County Junior B Football Final and contested a minor C County hurling final. No doubt there may be some left out but there were so many great displays and hard luck stories too.

So many of our players have played with Cork and won medals including all Irelands at  many levels – think of the contribution of the great Timmy McCarthy. Also, so many players and members have made massive effort and contribution to the Club.

Well what about 2016 for Castlelyons?

This is the crossroads but it looks good as we have the players from minor and U21 teams who lorded it some years ago and are now in the right age for a serious to at the Intermediate Championship.

In order to achieve this I am reminded of the recent book by James Kerr “Legacy” about the all Blacks ( a mighty read)  at P136 he says “It’s a particularly All Blacks brand of courage.... never to surrender, to spill blood for the team, to sacrifice.....to put your balls on the line............Champions do extra”.  In the paragraphs before it there is a most gruesome story of bravery, courage and effort.  The book is what the All Blacks can teach us about the business of life.

Whatever,  about the All Blacks winning the World Cup we are looking forward to a great year for Castlelyons in 2016 but we must do extra.

Scór na nÓg – Uí Mac Coille

The promotion of Scór at adult and juvenile levels has helped to play an important role on the revival of our culture and heritage. Both juveniles and adults in towns and villages throughout the East Cork Division have been afforded the opportunity to interact in the best of Irish culture.  It is imperative that we continue to promote Scór as it really adds to the overall value to the Club unit. The key attraction of Scór is that it brings people into club who are not necessarily interested in the sporting side of CLCG.  Scór provides potential to bring the Club to all the community thus increasing membership, support and greater community interest in the Club. Scór is commencing this year with the Scór na nÓg Competition (after National Schools and up to 17 years).  The aim is to have all clubs taking part in this competition with application forms available from club cultural officer or club secretary.

The Scór na nÓg Finals will be held at Lisgoold Hall on Sunday night the 8th November at 6 pm.

The Cork GAA Clubs Draw commences shortly.

Amazing Prizes - Support our Club.  What a selection to be won each month, Several Cars, Trip to China, Paddy's Day New York, Masters Augusta, Grand Prix Monaco, Cheltenham, Punchestown, bundles of cash and Apple Products.

This draw benefits our Club, benefits CLCG Chorcaí with funds for coaching youth development throughout the County and supports the Capital development of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

We have many training and playing with Development Squads and 3rd level Colleges in Cork and strong funding is provided.

Pairc Uí Chaoimh will be ready for 2017 and hopefully we will have Castlelyons players involved in big games there - what a boost for the Club.

When we join the Clubs Draw we support all this but above all almost 50% goes to the promoting Club so there is a major benefit to ourselves and surely 2016 will be our year with minor and U21 finalist (winners) coming of age.

There is another Draw Meeting this Friday night 23rd October at 7.30 pm so please support and it would be appreciated if all sellers attended.
