Scór na nÓg Finals Uí Mac Coille.

The East Cork Scór na nÓg Finals for East Cork were held in Lisgoold last Sunday night.  Castlelyons participated in three events Solo Singing, Instrumental Music and the Table Quiz.

Amy Clarke sang the Isle of Innisfree and came a very credible second as she was outstanding.  Our Instrumental group the Morrisson brothers Seamus, Declan and Óisin with two nice tunes “Out in the Ocean” and the “Cascade Polka” had the house going but were defeated by Glanmire in a close one.  We did come second holding off Killeagh.

Our Camogie girls were next up for the Table Quiz namely, Anna Greaney, Abbie Quirke, Shauna Mullen and Ann Marie Quirke.  They were up against more senior lads from Aghada, Bride Rovers, Killeagh and Youghal.  However, our girls put up a mighty show and done very well.  They are all under age for next year and with a bit of coaching in Quiz they will be a serious squad.  Well done and thanks girls.

This is an excellent competition as it provides a little rivalry in a social/fun element between the Clubs while promoting our culture. Thanks again to Orla Hallahan, Noelle Clarke and Jimmy Morrisson for their help in preparations.  Incidentally, we wish to congratulate Aghada the winners of the Table Quiz who earlier in the day won the County U16 B Football Championship and put their celebrations on hold to come to Lisgoold in the evening.

Gymnasium in the Community Centre

Good to see that a number of enthusiastic young members of the Intermediate Hurling Panel are presently carrying out a feasibility study on establishing a Gymnasium in the Community Centre with strength and conditioning equipment for teams.  There are some interesting pointers regarding the midweek use when players are away, use by other persons at quieter times and, the cost of equipment and compliance with basic regulations in this area.  This is an exciting proposal and hopefully will come to fruition as there is some unused space.

Cork, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael and Páirc Uí Chaoimh

Image of the New Páirc Uí ChaoimhA recent excellent publication "The GAA & Revolution in Ireland 1913 – 1923" with Gearóid Ó Tuathaigh, Editor outlines that in 1914 in Cork City there were “12 hurling teams, eleven football clubs, three rugby clubs, seven soccer teams and three camogie teams; Gaelic games routinely drew thousands to the Cork Athletic Grounds(now Pairc Uí Chaoimh).  It is hardly surprising that the Cork County Board introduced turnstiles, referee standardisation and transparent accounting”, and so the story goes as Cork came to play a lead role in Cumann Luthchleas Gael.

The long overdue revamp of Páirc Uí Chaoimh will put Cork up there with the best..  The new Stadium will have a 50,000 capacity.  It will also have new player and referee changing rooms, two covered stands, corporate boxes, medical rooms, a gym, restaurant and a museum and, of course a full sized all weather pitch alongside the stadium.  It will be invaluable for the city, county and region and will be complete in 2017 and, no doubt, Cork will be up there as leaders in the game again.

Meeting on Crime and Text Alert

There will be a meeting on Crime and the Text Alert System in the Community Centre Castlelyons on Thursday this Thursday 12th November at 7.30 pm.  Superintendent Mick McGuire, Sgts Andy Geary, John Kelly and Garda Brian Murray will attend.  All welcome.
