Poc Fada – St Stephen’s Day

The Annual Poc Fada will be hosted by the Juvenile Club on Stephen’s Day and will have a new feature this year as the participants will return to Pairc an t’Athair Peadar O’Laoghaire for a right few shots.  This is a mighty way to limber up after the Xmas for the New Year and, no doubt there will be a big take up on it.  There will be more details later to take out your Camáns and keep in touch.

St Colmans advance to Quarter Final of Dr Harty Cup

St Colman’s College 2-20: Scoil Na Tríonóide Naofa, Doon 2-11

Congrats to St Colmans College as they are back in serious hurling business.  Their latest victory over Doon in the Gaelic Grounds last Wednesday sees them into the Quarter Finals of the Dr Harty Cup for the first time in a few years.

Jamie O Leary - great play at full back

The first half was played at a hectic pace as Doon showed plenty of movement in the forward line and matched St Colmans on the scoreboard.  However, some of their air strikes dropped short and were mopped up by the Colman’s full back line where our own Jamie O Leary played very well at No 3.   His brother, Niall, who was hurling mighty at centre back came right through the field on a forty yard solo run towards the end of the first half and with perfect timing laid off a hand pass to Kyle Cronin of the ‘Hill who blasted to the net.

In the second half Niall again tore through the middle and found his man as Kyle Cronin scored a second goal.  The lad’s cousin, Keith O Leary, wearing the No 14 Jersey but operating around the 40 at times had a very good game and landed 0-6 from play.

Our three Castlelyons lads done very well and are part of a very good St Colman’s team as all six forwards got on the scoreboard and the two corner forwards Steve Condon and Kyle Cronin showed well for the ball and worked hard.  Great to see that we have two other great Castlelyons lads in the subs bench, namely, Barry Murphy and John Paul Murphy. We wish St Colmans and our men the best of luck in the Quarter Finals.

Team: -  E Davis (St Catherine’s); E Wallace (St Catherine’s), J O’Leary (Castlelyons), K Neville (St Catherine’s); E McGrath (Kilworth), N O’Leary (Castlelyons), O Hickey (Ballyduff); J Saich (Kilworth), S O’Connor (Bride Rovers); D Lenihan (Ballyhooly) C Donnellan (Kilworth), S McCarthy (Fermoy); K Cronin (Watergrasshill), K O’Leary (Castlelyons), S Condon (Glanworth). Subs: - T O’Donnell (Glanworth) for McCarthy (42), J Sheehan (Kilworth) for O’Leary (60).

The 2016 Cork GAA Championship Programme.

The Championship formats will be different next year.  This is due to a consultative process undertaken by the Competition Control Committee of the County Board prior to drawing up the new formats.  There was great interest expressed as players, members and spectators and all wanted meaningful Championships and a summer break (two weekend break in July).

Each team will have two games and then if victorious into play off groups in the championship or into a relegation group which will be considered in time.  We should know who our first round opponents are shortly as the Championship Draws takes place at the County Convention on Sunday 13th December, 2015.

Congrats to Dungourney.

Congrats to our neighbours Dungourney as they added the Munster Crown to their County Junior title with a comprehensive over Fenur, Waterford in Mallow last Sunday.  This Dungourney team are playing great hurling and show serious commitment.  They can well repeat their previous famous achievements of the early nineteenth century by adding another All Ireland trophy to their cabinet in 2016 and we wish them the very best of luck.
