Footballers play Glenville in the first round of JAFC.

Football Championship Fixtures

Stephen Hickey - a star goalie for last two yearsCastlelyons are playing in the East Cork Junior A Football Championship in 2016 and we are drawn in a derby first round versus Glenville to be played on or before the 26th March.  While this is Glenville’s second outfit they take their football serious up there and will start favourites but it could well go down to the wire.

We are playing in the A Under 21 Football Championship for 2016 after our win in the B Grade last year and we are drawn against Glanmire to be played on or before Saturday 6th March.  Mark Murphy has been appointed Manager and his selection team are Mark O Flynn, Michael Spillane and Ronan Fenton.  The lads are also managing the U21 hurlers this year also and we wish them the best for the season.

It is most pleasing to note the interest and attitude of the players towards football this year as they wished to play A Grade in both the Under 21 and Junior and although not taking part in the League they should be well up for it as they have the talent.

St Colman’s make a point but loose out in Dr Harty Cup.

Niall O Leary floats over a free in the Doon gameWithin a whistle, at least, of the spoils St Colmans hurled with panache and heart in a great game in Kilmallock last Saturday.  The white heat of battle was a reality as the snowflakes came down but both teams gave it their all.

Colmans hit for victory on the home straight well into the second half to lead by a point.  But and exchange of scores and a late point by Ard Scoil Rís put them ahead by just one and then as Colmans hit back there was a possible free but the whistle remained silent and it was not to be thus losing 0-13 to 1-9.

This was a mighty game and well done to all involved.  We are proud of our Castlelyons lads who had a great season with the College Jamie, Niall and Keith O Leary, Barry and John Paul Murphy. No doubt these lads will drive on for Castlelyons and some of the lads for Cork Minors later on.

Cork GAA Clubs Draw.

Congratulations to Fr. Michael Madden, our former Parish Priest and great supporter who was a recent winner in the January Cork GAA Clubs Draw of a Luxury Mini Break.

Best wishes to Ned.

We wish to extend best wishes to a great clubman Eddie Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Bros, Butchers in Fermoy who was hospitalised recently.  However, Ned is getting better every day and coming back to fitness again.

Fitzgibbon Cup.

Colm Barry in great form for Mary I in the FitzgibbonIt was a mixed bag for our lads Colm Spillane and Colm Barry in the first round of the Fitzgibbon Cup this week. Colm Spillane started in the No 6 Jersey for UCC in their clash with the Nicky English managed UCD.  However, UCD were convincing winners on the score of 2-12 to 0-13 despite a UCC star studded outfit.  It was unfortunate for our Colm Spillane as he suffered a shoulder injury and had to go off after a few minutes.

Jack Barry and Anthony Spillane were both subs but not called into action but then again there were a lot of county stars not started on the day.  Even though Group A is termed the group of death UCC should get back on track in the next round against Maynooth University.

Colm Barry had a sound game at corner back for Mary Immaculate College, Limerick as they had a comprehensive victory over NUI Galway.  Declan Hannon scored 1-9 for Mary I and Cian Lynch, saw red (both Limerick men) in a facile victory 1-16 to 0-13.
