Castlelyons GAA Notes W.E. 15.2.16 2016-02-17 13:03:00

Advance Ticket Purchase for Cork v Waterford on Saturday 20th February, 1916.

Cork continue their Allianz Hurling League programme next Saturday with their first home game of the season against Waterford in Pairc Uí Rinn at 7pm.  A big attendance is expected on the evening.

Admission for the game is €15 for adults but buy your tickets before Sunday either online or at a Centra/Supervalu stores and admission will only cost you €10.  The usual concessions apply, and U16s are free.

Cork did not play well last Sunday in Galway despite having a lot of work done.  No doubt, the selectors will have to experiment. It was this time last year Anto Spillane got some League time versus Clare (a game Cork won) and Colm Barry was more recently involved in a bit of action.  Now may be the time to invest in a few younger players as many of the old guard were off colour the last day and none better than our lads I have mentioned.

Colm Spillane is coming back to fitness and will surely feature on Sunday as the Rebels strive to get back on winning ways.

Castlelyons man to captain Cork Minor Hurlers for 2016.

Niall O Leary, who played with county hurling last year and was outstanding with St Colman’s in the Harty Cup this season was recently announced as Captain of the Cork Minor hurlers for this year’s championship.

This is a tremendous honour for Niall, his parents, his family, and our Club and we congratulate him and wish him the very best for the year ahead.

There can be no greater honour than wearing the jersey of your county and the Rebel jersey is the most revered of all.  This writer can remember growing up in Clare and listening to Radio, looking at TV and going to Limerick and Thurles only to suffer defeat at the hands of Cork as they rolled over All Irelands in every grade.

Lately, Cork are down a little but I strongly believe the underage and minor are on the up again and this could be Cork’s and Niall O Leary’s year.  Incidentally, Liam Healy of Sarsfields is the Vice-Captain.

The Cork Minor Hurlers continue to put in the hard work for the championship as they are down to face to Waterford on Wednesday 6th April at a Waterford venue.  They played Laois in Fermoy last weekend and recorded a comprehensive victory and continue training during the midterm break.

Niall’s twin brother Jamie O Leary came on at half time and did very well while Keith O Leary, who is also on the panel had exams study and was not available.

Knockanard Point to Points

Knockanard Point to Points took place on Sunday last. Castlelyons GAA wish to thank the Race Committee who gave us permission to host the Tea Tent.  There was a lot of work involved for the Club in preparations on Saturday preparing the soups and cooking the meats, then the Sunday morning preparations, setting up and serving during the day.

However, club members rallied to the cause as did many of the ladies and it all helped make the day most enjoyable while giving a good service.  Thanks to all our volunteers who helped in any way.

The Race Committee of this historic Point to Point, worked so hard to get the track in order and hopefully they had a good day as they deserve it.  The day was crisp and dry. This fantastic course and well laid out and by all accounts the racing was good.

Membership

It is time nearly time to take down the membership notices and for us to pay up our 2016 membership. The membership fees of €50 for Adults and €20 for Students and Old Aged Pensioners is very reasonable when one looks around the other clubs.

It can be paid to Donal O Leary our Treasurer, Kieran McGann our PRO or any club officer.

Commencement of intermediate hurling season.

The current bad weather and, indeed, of the last few months really effecting the pitches so it is very difficult to get games.  However, last year we played our first challenge game in the third week of February versus Ballyduff and we defeated St Catherines in U21 football the same weekend.

We have lost no time yet but it is imperative that lads get that strength and conditioning into the bodies and get to the weekly Astro Turf hurling training.  Weather permitting and pitch availability Mick Spillane and his management team have a challenge game arranged this weekend versus Castlemartyr and the date, time and venue will be on the web and tweeted when known.
