Footballers draw second league game at home.

Castlelyons 0-7 Carrigtwohill 0-7

We played Carrigtwohill in the second League game at home last Sunday. This was a dour battle with very low scoring. We defended well but failed to take a load of scoring opportunities. Alan Fenton put us 0-2 to 0-1 ahead with his second point from a free on 15 minutes. We began to drive on at this stage and created a couple of goal chances with some great interplay but failed to finish any of them. We did manage 0-3 from play but through Alan Fenton a free and a ’45 and Ronan O Regan from play but the opposition managed to score 0-3 also and to lead us 0-5 to 0-4 at half time.

We were well on top in the second but Carrig put over just 0-2 which was enough to draw the game half just managed 0-3 through Ronan O Regan, Eoin Maye and Ronan Bransfield. The final score was 0-7 apiece.

Fitzgibbon Cup News.

UCC 1-18 DCU 0-16.

UCC defeated DCU Dóchas Éireann at home in the quarter final last Tuesday. This was the proverbial cracker despite poor pitch conditions. DCU led at half time 0-11 to 0-11. The hurling was very good and with little between the teams Tipperary’s Seamus Kenny scored a vital goal for UCC as they went on to take it in the las few minutes.

The story continues for our lads who were all in mighty form in this game as Jack Barry was in top form in goals as he saved a rocked from Jamie Barron (Waterford), and Colm Spillane sound out at full back while Anto Spillane was really buzzing as he put over 0-3 from play. The lads are now heading for the Fitzgibbon Cup weekend in Galway and they play Carlow IT in the semi-final on Friday 24.2.17. If they win the final is on Saturday as Mary I, Limerick play Limerick IT in the other semi-final also on Friday. Best of luck lads.

Another Castlelyons star with a big interest in the Fitzgibbon weekend is our own Keith O Leary who lines out in the Ryan Cup semi-final for Cork ETB versus the Garda College and if they take this they will be playing the final in Pearse Stadium also on Saturday. Cork ETB had wins over IT Tralee and IT Tallaght already so we wish Keith the best of luck as the Ryan Cup as it is another prestigious Colleges trophy.

Down but not out for Saint Colman’s.

The hollowed Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on was heaving on Saturday with St Colman’s supporters as the lads took Our Lady’s, Templemore in the Dr Harty Cup Final.

Our Lady’s had lost four finals in recent years (2000, 2002, 2013 and 2016). However, driven on by eight of last year’s team they went on to win the Harty for the first time in 39 years. Captain Paddy Cadell lifted the Cup and Templemore were in full voice as they know how to celebrate down there. Incidentally, Paddy Cadell, who was a member of the Tipperary All-Ireland minor side, is a cousin of the Spillane family, Ballyoran.

St Colman’s may have fallen a bit flat on the day due to the power of the opposition but the College are after a great year and have already taken the Dean Ryan. They are still in the All Ireland and take on Loughrea, Galway in the next round and, no doubt this will give them an opportunity to reorganise again as the dream is still alive.

The team gave their best as our own men the O Leary brothers Jamie, at full back and Niall in the centre did well with Barry Murphy trying his best up front. Spare a moment for the St Colman’s management outfit who have spent endless hours on the team especially teachers Flannan Cleary, Michael Collins and Tom Shinnick (Physio) and, of course, Dr Paddy Burke. Well done to all as your day will come.

Cork defeated by very committed Dublin in SHL.

Well last Saturday evening was a little different from the previous one in Páirc Uí Rinn as we got a little bit of a trimming from Dublin. This time all pre-match formalities were in order but the commitment to win one’s own ball was just not there for Cork during the game. This left the Cork goalie, A Nash, with no option but to try and place his puckouts but Cork’s legendry goalie, Ger Cunningham, and now Dublin manager had his work done in this department and was having none of it as his team turned over a load of Cork puckouts many of which led to direct scores for Dublin.

Our own Colm Spillane was doing fine at full back but pulled up with a twinge in the knee midway through the second half so let’s hope he will be okay for UCC in the Fitzgibbon finals this week. I firmly believe the net can be spread wider for some more hurling men throughout the county who can win and fetch their own ball like our own Colm Barry. Lads we must get more strong big men to win ball.

Healthy Clubs Roadshow.

This Roadshow was held in Nemo Rangers on Saturday morning and there was a very large attendance. Speakers included Mickey Harte, Tyrone, Killian O Connor, Mayo, Anna Geary, Cork and Michael Fennelly, Kilkenny and Dr Janus Harrington, St Finbarr’s. Tom Carroll is the Castlelyons Club Health and Wellbeing Officer and will be undergoing some training soon. It was great to have the club represented by Michael Barrett, our secretary and Father Peter Hegarty and both found same very good
