Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 11th September 2017

Castlelyons 4-15 Bride Rovers 3-11.

Castlelyons under 21 hurlers had a splendid victory over neighbours Bride Rovers in the East Cork Under 21 A hurling final in Lisgoold last Sunday. The pitch was in pristine condition and able to house a good crowd for this local derby that had promised a lot. Now while this grade is diluted as many East Cork teams are now grazing in the new County Premier Under 21 pastures I doubt if any of them would survive the hurling and commitment produced by the two teams on Sunday. We did say last week that the derby winners here would have to show a good hurling attitude and drive to take the day. Well that’s exactly what both Castlelyons and Rovers did for the hour in a titanic struggle helped by referee Cathal McAllister who let good strong hurling flow while it was unfortunate that he did take the ultimate action against the Rovers centre back twenty minutes into the game.

Castlelyons started with David Morrison, who was to play a mighty game, cutting in from the wing to take a breaking ball from Jack Barry and plant it in the net. However, Brian Roche levelled it for the Rovers a few minutes later with a great shot. David Morrison again had a fine point for us as had Mark Spillane. Then Niall O Leary launched a massive 0-1 from midfield and Mark Spillane cut in to take a broken ball from Jack for 0-1. Ian O Riordan passed to N O Leary for another 0-1 to put us well up on the scoreboard. We were hurling well in the backs as Michael Geary, Declan Varner and Redmond Walsh were strong in our full back line and Niall O Leary and Barry Murphy ruled midfield. However, we went a bit sloppy in the forwards despite the twin towers Shane Moroney and Jack Barry winning a lot of ball we had three wides from easy chances. You do not do this to opposition like Rovers and they thundered back into the game with three points and began to dominate. Their star forward Brian Roche was then one on one with our goalie John Paul Murphy but our man stood firm to make an excellent same and the Castlelyons crowd began to roar again.

Niall O Leary who was majestic all through pointed two frees for us and Mark Spillane chipped in with another two fine points. Then it was Rovers turn but N O Leary was back in defence to clear a vital ball again. Jack Barry had 0-2 from frees to leave the half time score 1-11 to 1-5 in our favour but we wondered would this be enough of a lead as Rover had the breeze for the second half.

Bride Rovers came out for that second half and hurling downhill towards the village end with the aid of a lively breeze they meant business. They added a few points promptly. Our backs particularly the half line of Conor McCarthy, Shane Fenton and Jamie O Leary done well done well at this stage. However, when Rovers applied most pressure our goalie John Paul Murphy made a few massive saves to keep us in the game. Keith O Leary 0-2 and Jack Barry 0-1 kept the score board ticking over for us but a goal by Rovers brought them within two points of us. Then with the game in the melting pot and Rovers fighting hard Shane Moroney won a puck out and drove upfield for Jack who shot for goal but Ian O Riordan showing mighty speed got on to it finished a low one to the net and Jack himself had another goal 40 seconds later after a serious run by David Morrison. This was the turning point as the game was going away from Rovers and we succeed in closing out the game to win 4-15 to 3-11. An Cathaoirleach, Uí Mac Coille Dick Fitzgerald presented the Cup to Captain Jack Barry amid great celebrations and it was back to the Club Bar for lovely food and drinks.

We have been saying with the last few years that we had many games for the taking but could not close them out with a win. Well yesterday was certainly a turnabout as our lads fought for every ball with spirit, skill an ability to defend well and take the score when it was on. We have a little bit more to do in training to ensure our fitness levels are strong because it will not be easy in the county either. However, one must admire the management team led by Donal Barry as they have brought in a strong group to assist from logistics to rubbing and no doubt there is more in the tank which is good for Castlelyons. We now prepare for the winners of the Carberry Division as Clonakilty play Kilbree on a date to be arranged in that final.

Major Fundraising Draw.

Castlelyons Adult Club, Juvenile Section and Camogie Club have come together and launched a major fund-raising drive for the next month. All clubs gathered at the official launch on Monday evening in the Club Bar. Our three wise men in the chairs Maurice Carroll, Denis Buckley and John Carroll spoke of the social values of the clubs to the local community and the increased numbers involved in all grades. A host of teams are still involved in the business end of competitions to date. The U21 hurlers after their East Cork win are now heading into the county section while our Minor A hurlers play the semi-final of the Rebel Óg League and the ladies are training for the County Junior Camogie semi-final plus of course many other teams involved at various levels. Also, the Juvenile Section is now catering for a record number of juveniles and are keeping up the traditional quality and skill level of Castlelyons as Colm Spillane and Barry Murphy have represented Cork at the highest level in senior and minor hurling this year. However, it costs a bit to run these clubs and the fundraising committee who are energetic and motoring well have €3,000 in prizes with tickets priced at €10 each. Your support is appreciated.
