Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 8.1.18 2018-01-09 23:01:00

New Coach for our Intermediate Hurlers

Darren Tobin has taken up the role of coach to our Intermediate hurling team. Darren is a young Castlelyons coach who was involved in coaching last year and did a great job with the Junior B hurling team who were East Cork Junior B finalists and, of course, the victorious East Cork Under 21A hurling and somewhat unlucky to be beaten in the county semi final by Inniscarra. Darren a quality hurler, who played Harty with St Colman’s and won a county U21 hurling medal with us is still young in hurling terms. He was in Australia for a few years and played immediately with us with us on return but suffered the dreaded cruciate injury in mid-2017 and is currently in rehab.  We wish Darren the very best in coaching the team this year.

Castlelyons Victory Social for Saturday 20th January 2018

We had a nice bit of success in the Club for 2017 and are holding a victory social in the Rochestown Park Hotel on the 20.1.18 at 8.00pm. We have a lot of Cups to show on the night and some medals to present. We will have the Munster Cup as Cork were Munster SH Champions in 2017, likewise we will have the Unnamed Cup as Cork won the Munster Minor title in 2017. We will have the County Intermediate Hurling League Division 2 Cup, the Ben Purcell Cup for the East Cork U21 Division A Hurling and the Patrick O Mahony Division 3 East cork Football League Cup all won by our club in 2017. Of course, we had Colm Spillane an All-Star Nominee for 2017 after a mountain of hurling with the Cork seniors and Barry Murphy likewise with the Minors who lost narrowly to Galway in the All Ireland Final. These great lads have really helped make it a historic year and will be at the Social. Tickets are just €30 and can be got from Con Lawlor, Denis Fenton, James Maye or any committee member. Darragh Lawlor is looking after the player count. We have the great Disc Jockey Ian O Brien with the best of Rock, Country and Ceili to provide the entertainment. So, with all the celebrations, the great food and dancing this should be a night to remember. Don’t forget your ticket while there’s still a few left.

Jack Barry vice-captain of UCC Fitzgibbon Cup Team.

This year our clubman Jack Barry is vice-captain of UCC’s Fitzgibbon Cup team. Jack is going well both in goals and outfield for the last few years. They are down to play Cork in the Canon O Brien Cup Senior Hurling game in the Marydyke this Wednesday and then it a crack first round Fitzgibbon Cup derby versus CIT on Sunday 21.1.18 at 2pm so we wish Jack and UCC the best in this years Fitzgibbon.

The late Canon Michael O’Brien’s record as a hurling manager was seriously impressive and included three Croke Cups and five Harty Cups with St Finbarrs Farrenferris, ten Fitzgibbon Cups with UCC, six Minor, one Junior, two Senior All Ireland’s, five Munster Championships and one National Hurling League title with Cork.

We have another clubman, Jamie O Leary, playing in the Freshers One team this year with CIT. However, they are not out in the championship until Tuesday 13th February when they take on IT Carlow at home.

Imokilly Victory Dance this Friday 12.1.18.

County senior hurling champions Imokilly will be presented with their medals this Friday night at a Victory Dance in the Garryvoe Hotel. Starting at 7.30pm and tickets costing €35 with music by Art Supple there’s still a few tickets left and if interested do contact 0867773100. Great to see four Castlelyons clubmen being presented with medals as Colm Barry and Niall O Leary were outstanding at full and centre back respectively throughout the year while Tom Carroll and Aidan O Sullivan were members of the panel and unlucky not to make the first fifteen.

Incidentally, a second-string Cork outfit played a strong Clare fifteen in Ennis last Sunday and were beaten 4-17 to 0-18. There were five East Cork on the starting fifteen and a total of eight got game time. This included Brian Lawton, Declan Dalton and Ian Cahill of the Imokilly team. Of course, a much strong Cork outfit played Dublin in Cork on the Saturday. Ryan Taylor and Peter Duggan both Clooney Quin men were new for Clare and hurled very well. They will be seen again. However, Cork had two new young stars the week before against Limerick, namely Tim O Mahony, Newtownshandrum and Jack O Connor who will surely be seen big time again. Cork play Clare down in the Park next May in the new championship format and this is the real Rebel day that matters. Anyway, first things first as Cork play Kilkenny in the first League game on Saturday 27th January in the Park at 7pm after the Cork versus Tipperary Football League game at 5pm. There is a big crowd expected for this double header.

Visit of the Sean Óg Murphy Cup to Castlelyons Club.

Well the much-awaited visit of the county champions 2017 Imokilly and the Sean Óg Murphy Cup took place last Friday night. Lads are probably gone a bit cup and turkey tired and while the crowd was reasonable a special thanks to St Catherines, Watergrasshill and Fr O Neills lads and, of course, the members of our own club who turned out together with East Cork Board Chairman and Vice Chairman 2017, Dick Fitzgerald and Donal O Keeffe. We had a pleasant and jovial night. Also, a special thanks to the bar committee on the night who now have the Club Bar in such a pleasant and homely shape.

Votes of Sympathy.

Our Club wishes to extend sincere sympathy to the McHugh, Hurley, Doherty, O Keeffe, McNally, O Brien, and O Flynn(Tallow) families in their recent bereavements. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go Léir.
