Castlelyons go second in Premier Intermediate Hurling League

Castlelyons 0-17 Mallow 0-10.

We conceded home advantage in this Premier IHL game as our pitch is a little damaged after the storms and made the trip to Mallow to take on the home side. The evening was dry and crisp with the game under lights and their pitch in very good condition. Both teams can serve good stuff particularly Mallow as they were so near Kanturk in last year’s county final. So, we expected a good game and weren’t disappointed as it was a cracker. Mallow showed their intent early with a few attacks, but our backs done well as Pa Herlihy was accurate from frees and play registering four points from play for them inside fifteen minutes. Denis Hayes was getting good possession for them and putting over another point. However, we kept the scoreboard ticking over too as Alan Fenton had 0-3 from frees, Eoin Maye, Colm Spillane and a fine point from Ronan O Regan put us 0-6 to 0-5 up with a quarter hour gone. The hurling was fast and hard but Castlelyons began to get on top as Alan Fenton had a further 0-4 from frees and play. Pa Herlihy replied with 0-2 from Mallow and their centre forward had 0-1. Aidan O Sullivan was now hurling well in the pocket and clearing a power of ball from centre back and Colm O Neill was holding down the Stand side wing well. Then we had a massive point from Darragh Lawlor out under the stand as he drove onto a pass from Eoin Maye with Ronan Fenton involved also. Our final score of the half was a point from half back Tom Carroll who was hurling very strong. Our full line of Barry Murphy, Shane Moroney and Ronan O Regan worked very hard and were often fouled in possession for Alan Fenton to convert. So, Castlelyons were 0-12 to 0-8 up at half time and worth it with good hurling.

Mallow came out for the second half and had made a right effort on arranging the match ups. The tallest of the three Hayes brothers went in full forward on our full back Colm Barry and Dara Moynihan went to midfield as they tried to create room for their sharpshooter Pa Herlihy. Herlihy, a fair operator, had a point for Mallow and they had a few wides. Then Colm Spillane put Ronan Fenton through for a great point. Mallow tried route one with the high ball into their full forward line but to no avail as I noted three magnificent high catches by Colm Barry who was hurling out of his skin as Robbie Feeney and Brian Carroll cleared well also. Castlelyons finished strong as Ronan O Regan, showing good form and speed on the turn sent over another sweet 0-1and Alan Fenton pointed a few frees. The Mallow goalie Aidan Long made some top class saves, one rasper from Alan Fenton, whereas our own Jack Barry had a handy enough evening. Overall it was a good team display as Alan Fenton was very accurate from fries and play landing 0-10 from frees and play and Eoin Maye drew gasps from Mallow mentors with his ball winning ability and hard work as he emptied the tin with a mighty display. So, it was 0-17 to 0-10 to Castlelyons at the final whistle in a game well handled by referee Colm Vaughan of Cill na Matra.

Overall a good result and while Mallow were down a few players such as Cormac Murphy we were down a few also. We are now second in the table with the same points but lesser scoring difference to Ballinhassig who are top. We are showing an ability to start and close out a game well which is vital for championship hurling later. Great to see Colm Spillane back after his league endeavours with Cork and Barry Murphy, last year’s county minor star, despite studying for his Leaving Cert. Declan Varner is back again after injury as is Brian O Donovan. Niall, Jamie and Keith O Leary are out through injury now as is Ciarán McGann, but they should be back in the panel shortly. Well done to the lads and the management outfit as there are good signs of progress and this panel is coming of age. Let’s put a few of these performances together as it is ideal for the championship. Finally, a word of thanks to our supporters who made the game as no doubt it helps the team.

U21 Footballers defeated in East Cork Semi Final.

We had home advantage in this East Cork U21 football semi-final against Midleton but despite our boys making a supreme effort and some outstanding individual displays we just could not match a much stronger Midleton fifteen. It is very difficult even a B level if your team are not up on the age and our lads have a few years left yet at U21 level so let’s not be too despondent as the future is good. Anyways back to the game we had a lot of possession in the first half but failed to take some good scoring chances. John Paul Murphy was busy in goal and did well as Eoin O Neill Conor McCarthy and Andrew O Neill covered well in front of him. Perter Roche, Niall O Leary and Ian O Riordan dealt with a lot of attacks and moved forward with pace. However, we were down 1-5 to 0-3 at half time.

We done very well for periods of the second half but the and a great shot for goal by David Morrison was just wide of the target and a might run by Barry Murphy and shot was saved by their keeper. Pierse Varner and David Morrison tried very hard in the middle for us but Midleton were very strong in that department also. Jack Ronayne had 0-1 for us but Midleton got in for a goal and were nearly in again but for a great tackle by Conor McCarthy at full back. Then great work by Mark Spillane and Shane O Flynn as he parted to David Morrison who got though and buried a great goal that gave us hope Then David Morrison soloed through again for 0-1 and Barry Murphy had 0-1 after good work by Richard Morrison. But our efforts were not enough not enough to stop Midleton who themselves kept the scoreboard ticking over to run out facile winners.

We did get a win in the competition with a young team and as I said Midleton are a strong outfit mostly on the age. However, our lads done well and can feel good about their performance as we were down Jamie and Keith O Leary both injured and they would have helped our cause if available. Thanks to our management outfit as it’s great to see three members of our intermediate team on the line with Colm Barry as manager and his two selectors Eoin Maye and Darragh Lawlor.

Castlelyons Junior Footballers out on Easter Monday.

At the time of going to press we do not have an official fixture our junior football team management are targeting a league game versus Carrigtwohill for Easter Monday evening. We have suffered top defeats to date in the league and it would be great to get back to winning ways. Hopefully, this game will take place and we will advise through social media if fixture and time is definite.
