Castlelyons GAA week ended 3.12.18 2018-12-04 18:10:00

Interesting AGM on Friday 30th November 2018.

The Castlelyons GAA Annual General Meeting was held last Friday night last 30.11.18 in the Club Bar. There was a reasonable attendance but a little down on last year. While it proved an interesting meeting, it was disappointing that we found it difficult to fill some positions for 2019 and had to defer these to our next meeting.

Our Secretary, Michael Barrett opened with the minutes of last year’s Cruinniú Bhliaintúil and gave a thorough and excellent account of all the happenings in our club during the past year both on and off the pitch. This included the following: -

  • He gave a brief outline of the activities of the intermediate, U21 and Junior B hurlers, the junior and Under 21 footballers for the year and thanked the players and management teams for their great effort and commitment during the year.
  • We did not win any silverware for 2018 but performed well in both the Intermediate hurling and Under 21 championships.
  • He thanked the Chairman and Treasurer for their work during the year and all the other officers with various responsibilities.
  • He complimented the Juvenile and Camogie Clubs who continue to promote our games and introduce the children of the Parish to the game.
  • He praised our players involved with the county namely Colm Spillane now a top-class player with the Cork senior hurling team and an All-Star Nominee for 2018. Niall O Leary doing so well with the Cork Under 21 hurling team and receiving a Bórd Gáis All Star Award. He congratulated all Colm Spillane, Colm Barry, Niall O leary, Tom Carroll, Aidan O Sullivan (most of the year) and Kieran McGann (Treasurer) all from the club and involved with Imokilly who won the Cork senior hurling championship for 2018.
  • He paid a special thanks to the CES workers under the leadership of Assumpta Mangan who kept the whole place so well for the year. John Healy who acted as Liaison Officer with Assumpta and the CES workers on the pitch & dressing rooms.
  • He thanked the bar committee who worked hard all year and have redecorated the place.
  • He outlined the value of the Club Lotto, the great work of the sellers and the commitment of the Lotto team under the stewardship of Donal O Leary. Donal took over in January 2018 from Michael Hegarty who had given 20 years of sterling service as Lotto Cash Officer. Indeed, the Secretary thanked all who offer their assistance in any way and those who purchase tickets.
  • He thanked John Barrett who has continued to promote and collect the finances for the Cork GAA Clubs Draw for the last number of years as it is a good source of finance to our club while offering good prizes also.
  • He had a special word of thanks for our new Sponsor ZEUS and all others who sponsored and made contributions to the club during the year.
  • He wished the club the best for 2019
  • Our Secretary offered condolences to all who lost loved ones during the year. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go léir.

Treasurer’s Report

Donal Barry, our treasurer, gave his report and his financial statement and balance sheet together with bank balances and other details. He outlined that he was bringing all matters into line with the financial year. When he finished there was little discussion but a clear realisation that we must make every effort in the coming year to support the Club and introduce financial initiatives for proposed development and team support.

He pointed to the importance of the weekly lotto and thanked the Lotto Committee. Donal O Leary assisted with a full report on the Lotto Draw for the year and this was most positive. Donal O Leary was thanked most sincerely for his great work. John Barrett was thanks for his work on the Cork GAA Clubs Draw. He was especially thankful to the

He was especially thankful for the generous ZEUS Sponsorship as being vital to club funding. He was thankful thanks to the finance committee involving the adult, juvenile and camogie groups who worked hard at the monster draw and it was successful albeit not as strong as the previous year.

Jimmy O Leary of the Bar Committee assisted the Treasurer in giving an account of the Bar for the year. This is their second year as a subcommittee and they have again done an outstanding job for 2018 and as their finances are strong. Jimmy exuded delight with the outcome and outlined that there was untapped potential in the bar as he called for more support by all.

The Treasurer thanked all his fellow officers, committee members, our sponsors, patrons, and those who bought and sold tickets during the year. He thanked John Healy for his great work as chair of the field committee and John McCarthy. They lads had arranged for sanding and reseeding and he looked forward to an improvement in the pitch again next year as he thanked the lads.

Managers Reports

Mick Spillane, Manager of the Intermediate team, Donal Barry of the Junior B Hurlers and Colm Barry again on behalf of the U21 Hurlers and Footballers, and Donal O Leary Manager of the Footballers all gave reports.

Mick Spillane pointed out it was a good season for the Intermediate hurlers as they were joint second in the premier league and after a great win over Youghal and a draw with Courcey Rovers in the quarter final they were narrowly defeated in the replay. While Mick was disappointed, he felt that the team has great potential as they were short three top lads last year in Anthony Spillane, Jamie O Leary and Keith O Leary all due to long term injury with Cian O Leary unable to return from Dublin due to studies. Mick outlined that the injured boys would be available again for 2019 and there is a good bit more in the team. He was very thankful to the coach Darren Tobin, John McCarthy and Padraic Murphy his selectors. He outlined that John McCarthy was totally dedicated and had all logistics in order while Neill Spillane looked after the statistics.

Donal Barry gave an account of the Junior B Hurling and both Donal and his selectors Larry Murphy, Ian Barry and Colm Barry gave a hand out. The turnout for the Junior B’s could be better but a lot of lads were away and then the championship night clashed with several fixtures the same week thus effecting performance. However, it was agreed by all that it is vital to have a second team to give game time to Intermediate panellists and many others who are not getting any games with the top team.

Colm Barry gave a detailed account of Under A Grade 21 hurling performance for the year. We drew with both Carrigtwohill and Watergrasshill. We were then narrowly defeated by Bride Rovers in the Semi Final. In the Under 21 B Football Championship we defeated Glenbower Rover and were defeated by Midleton in the Semi Final after a good performance. Donal thanked his fellow selectors James Maye and Darragh Lawlor and while they didn’t win any trophy they played well in both competitions. Thanks to the three lads here who took time out of their own training to put a mighty effort into the U21’s and no doubt their efforts will pay dividends yet.

Donal O Leary manager of the Junior A footballers this year gave an account of our performance in the A Grade championship. We were defeated by Cloyne in the first round and defeated Aghada in the second round, but we had a weakened team against Lisgoold in the third and bowed out after a game performance. In the Junior 2 League we played five games winning two, drawing one and losing two and ending up mid table. Donal O Leary thanked the players for their efforts and the relationship with the hurlers was good and not overlapping. He thanked his fellow selectors James Moroney and Maurice Carroll, also, Anthony Spillane and Ciarán McGann who took some sessions. Donal has three years done and outlined that whoever would be manager he strongly believes that participation in the league is vital.

Chairman’s Report

Con Lawlor, our outgoing chairman then gave his report and reiterated many of our Secretary Michael Barrett’s comments outlining that he was very proud to be chairman of a strong club like Castlelyons. He thanked his secretary, treasurer and the club for their great work. He also outlined that he had led a subcommittee in search of a coach for the year 2019 and would be able to have some news on that at the next meeting. He outlined that there was a lot of work required both on and off the field as there were plans for development and improvements of the Grounds. Generally, he felt the Castlelyons was in a good position and with a bit of luck they would achieve more success in 2019.

There are some people available for the unfilled officerships and these will be settled at the next club meeting. While there are some serious positions to be filled it is still very pleasing to see younger members taking on work. There were no motions and discussions were good and positive. Is maith an t-iománaí an té a bhíonn ar an gclaí and look folks we do need a few to jump off the ditch and give a hand agus ath mór oraibh le 2019. Finally, a very special word of thanks to Father Gerard Coleman, P. P., who came to our AGM the last night.

Coláiste an Craoibhín hurlers defeated by Crescent College

Coláiste an Craoibhín who were going well in the Corn Sheain Uí hAnragain were defeated on Monday by Crescent College, Limerick. The game was held in Knocklong despite Coláiste’s best efforts Crescent were just a better team on the day. Conor McCarthy, Castlelyons had a good season with the Colaiste and this will no doubt help his club preparations for 2019.

Best of luck to Bride Rovers in U21A County Hurling Final.

Bride Rovers who defeated us in East Cork earlier this year have made it in style to the county under 21A hurling final and are awaiting the winners of Fermoy and Cloughduv which is due to be played this week. The final could be part of a bumper programme next Sunday as two other East Cork teams Midleton and Fr O Neills battle it out in the Premier Under 21 hurling final in Pairc Uí Rinn. Best of luck to our Bride Rovers and sure what a derby it would be to have their opponents as Fermoy if they come through the Cloughduv game.
