Castlelyons 2-11 Erins Own 1-11

The Junior B championship versus Erins Own was played on Wednesday 31^st July at 7.45pm in a well set out Bride Rovers pitch with Jim Hennessey on the whistle. Erins Own started well but Darren Tobin kept us in touch with a few well taken frees and Ian O Riordan had a point. Then Ciarán McGann hit in a monster of a free that was misjudged by the keeper and resulted in a fortuitous goal for us. This left us in the driving seat hitting into the second quarter on a score 1-3 to 0-5. Ian O Riordan had another 0-1 for us. One of their best men got a straight red for a nasty pull on Cian O Leary and it upset their match ups a bit. Then Alan O Regan won a great turnover, headed for goal and laid off to Brian O Donovan who pulled first time to the net from the edge of the square. This left us up 2-4 to 0-7 at half time.

The second half was a dour affair as Erins Own pressed forward, but our goalie John Paul Murphy was sharp, the full back line and particularly the half line done very well. Midfielders Jimmy O Leary and Brian Carroll hit a fair amount of ball. Ronan Fenton, Darren Tobin and Robbie Feeney kept the scoreboard ticking over with a few points as all the forward tracked well and worked hard. We were under pressure coming int the end as referee Jim Hennessey’s rolling hand signage indicated over carrying a few times by our lads for some unusual frees. However, it was a well merited win on a score 2-11 to 1-11. There will be tougher days ahead, but we should go through to the quarter finals now. Noel McAuliffe is injured presently, and Shane Cotter had a minor football game on the night.

Our weekly club lotto draw was held in the Peddlers on Tuesday 23rd July and the numbers drawn were 17, 24, 30 and 32. There was no winner. There were eight Lucky Dip winners were as follows: -

Magnificent double in Portlaoise by Cork U20’s

A fancied Cork side certainly lived up to their rating in the Bord Gáis Energy All Ireland U20 Hurling semi-final last week when they defeated Kilkenny on the score 1-16 to 0-13. This was an excellent performance and augurs well for the All-Ireland final in a few weeks’ time as they take on Tipperary again. Well done to all and to our East Cork men who done so well and our own Barry Murphy who came on as a substitute during the game.

Then it was on to the big ball game in the Eirgrid All Ireland U20Football final as the Rebels took on Dublin who had shown massive form. However, Cork had done likewise and despite going down 1-6 to no score against the Dubs early on they fought back for a memorable win 3-16 to 1-14. This was a display of sheer quality and class by Cork. They looked a powerful outfit for a team that did not come together until the end of February and no doubt we will hear more of these lads as Cork football drives for Sam in the future. Overall, a fantastic double as any day you beat Kilkenny in a most important hurling game and the Dubs in a football final it is a great day for Cork. Well done to all. Corcaigh Abú.

Cork Ladies take All Ireland Minor Football Title.

Cork Ladies registered their fourth All Ireland Minor A title in five years with a resounding 4-11 to 1-8 win over Monaghan Monday. Well done to all and especially to neighbours Sarah Murphy, goalie and Katie Quirke, full forward of Bride Rovers. Both had great games with Katie Quirke scoring 1-7 and winning the player of the match.

Castlelyons GAA Hurling and Camogie Skills Camp.

Registration for our Hurling and Camogie Skills Camp commencing Monday the 12^th August for three days is going very well. We will have all our stars including Niall O Leary and Colm Spillane and Camogie Stars. Sheamie Harnedy will be our special guest. The camp will be available to juveniles (boys & girls) between the ages 6 and 14 years of age, who are active members of their clubs on a first come first served basis as the numbers are lim­ited. Application must be to our Club Secretary. The student must be regis­tered with his/her GAA/Camogie club. The Fee is €40, and a special gift is supplied. Abernethy Cup.

Castlelyons 3-16 Dungourney 0-22

Our intermediate team defeated Dungourney in the East Cork IHC (Abernethy Cup) last Saturday evening on a score 3-16 to 0-22. Mike Walsh was on the whistle and did a good job as he left play flow. This was a lively game with Dungourney putting it up to a relatively strong Castlelyons side. Early on we kept with the opposition as our forwards picked off some good points. Midway in the first half David Morrison won a good ball out on the wing turned his man and planted it for a great goal. However, Dungourney made their way back into the game and it took some good defending especially a good save from Jack Barry and a few catches from full back Colm Barry to keep us in it. The half time score was 1-7 to 0-10.

The half time convening comprised the usual stats check and the huddle as management spelled out the need for an improvement. This advice worked as the lads tacked on two fast goals at the start of the second half with David Morrison gaining good possession and supply his second. Then Alan Fenton set up Keith O Leary who unleashed a great shot on the run for our third goal and this put us six points ahead. Dungourney kept working hard and showed great composure as they played through the lines at times and driven by Shane Hegarty and Niall Motherway they really came back into the game. But we did enough to stay ahead. The midfield of Ronan O Regan and Eoin Maye battled hard. All our forwards got on the scoreboard with Alan Fenton, Keith O Leary and Anthony Spillane doing well on their first day back after injury. There were a few anxious moments, but we ran out 3-16 to 0-22 winners and advance to the semi-final.
