Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 28.10.19. 2019-10-29 17:31:00

St Colman’s take another Dean Ryan title.

Congrats and well done to St Colman’s on a massive one-point win, 0-14 to 1-10, last Friday. The game was played in Kilmallock and the weather was poor but did not dim their spirit as they faced up to a very strong Ard Scoil Rís side. A great few days for our own Anthony Spillane too as he managed the team. A special congrats to our own Colm McCarthy from Castlelyons who manned the goals and done very well with clever puckouts and some good saves and to Oscar Hallihan, Ian Ryan and Mike Griffin who were also on the panel. Congrats also to our neighbours, Bride Rover, who had nearly a third of the team and there was strong representation too from other local clubs.

Three in a row for Imokilly.

An almost unbackable Imokilly with a star-studded outfit faced Glen Rovers in the SHC County Final last Sunday but were held up until late into injury time before making sure of an unprecedented three in a row for the East Cork Divisional team. The final score was 2-17 to 1-16 and with just three points in it late into injury time and near miss from the Glen Alan O Regan put over an invaluable point to the delight of a reasonable East Cork following. The game was not a classic by any means an it reminded me of an ould song “you’re there when the clock gives a warning and there for an hour you will wait”. There was a lot of warnings by the referee in a stop start game as Glen Rovers showed warrior stuff to remain in the game that they never led. I suppose finals are not classics as the result is so important.

There were warriors too in the Imokilly side as Colm Barry, Mick Russell and John Cronin cleared their lines time and again. Bill Cooper battled so strong and read the play so well to give a man of the match contribution while Declan Dalton, Seamus Harnedy and Anthony Spillane were outstanding in the forward line.

Sincere congratulations to all the lads who made the three in a row possible as I believe no divisional side has done it in hurling and only Beara in football in 1932’, 33’ and 34’. Our men and mentors will go down in the annals of a golden era of East Cork Hurling. Fr O Neills took the U21 last year and the Premier Intermediate Championship a few weeks ago. Midleton CBS are Harty Cup winners in 2019 while Midleton have taken the Premier 1 minor hurling already this year, Kilta Óg are Premier 2 minor hurling winners. Next weekend Russell Rovers and Carrignabhfear battle it out in the County JHC Final. This is a tribute to the unselfish work of so many mentors throughout the Division who are beavering away in the background and hopefully it will show at county level in the next few years.

From a Castlelyons perspective our contribution has been strong over the last three years. Colm Barry has been an ever present and was simply awesome at full back in this final and the same over the years. Are there better county players around than this man. Well what do you think? Antony Spillane haunted by injury with a few years has made it back again to top class hurling and gave an outstanding second half performance. Tom Carroll and Barry Murphy were on the panel but not called upon. We had Niall O Leary in 2017 and ’18 starring at centre back and Colm Spillane back in ’18 at corner back. Let’s not forget Aidan O Sullivan who was a member of the panel for two years but now in Boston USA and playing top class football over there. Hope you’ll be back for 2020 Aidan. All in all, a great contribution to Imokilly and, of course, the experience should stand Castlelyons in good stead but that’s another day’s work.

Special General Meeting.

Castlelyons GAA will be holding a special General Meeting in the Community Centre on Friday 1st November at 8pm. The purpose of this meeting is to outline and ratify future development. Your attendance would be appreciated.

Congrats to Castlelyons Camogie.

Congratulations and well-done tour camogie players who defeated Bride Rovers in the Under 13 league last Friday night. They also took the Under 14 Championship in style recently. Castlelyons hosted the under 13 game and it was a great end to a mighty season for the club.

Under 21 hurlers in action on Wednesday 30.10.19.

Our U21 hurlers play Watergrasshill down in Aghada on this Wednesday night the 30.10.19 down in Aghada with Pa Beausang on the whistle. A bit late in the year for these games and it was to be played on Friday evening but postponed due to inclement weather. Surely a replay could take place on Saturday, Sunday or Bank Holiday Monday in daylight but maybe lads were unavailable for various reasons. This will be an interesting game as both sides have a lot of good hurlers. Alan O Regan of the Cork U20 side leads out the ‘Hill while Barry Murphy also of the U20 side leads out own lads. All support appreciated.

Defeat for our Minor Footballers in League Final.

Castlelyons lost to Lisgoold 6-7 to 2-7 in the Division 4 Rebel Óg East League Final on Monday. Castlelyons had a depleted team for various reason but fought well despite coming out second best.

Teacht le Chéile na gCarad - Friends’ Get Together

Bord Oirthear Chorcaí invites all clubs in the Division to a Teacht le Chéile/Get Together at Club Áras CLG, Eochaill on Friday 8th November 2019 ag a 7.30 pm. The brainchild of Nollaig Ó hÓgáin, Eochaill, it is especially for the senior members of our clubs (former players, officials, administrators), who may enjoy meeting, talking and reminiscing about games and events of yesteryear. We think that this is a great opportunity for all clubs to reach out to members and friends, who may not be as active as heretofore and to show that they are all still welcome in the GAA family. So please make the effort to get the word out to as many as you can. Go raibh maith agat! Liam Ó Laochdha 0863258271
