Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 11.11.19. 2019-11-12 14:30:00

Castlelyons U21 Hurlers are East Cork U21A Hurling Champions.

Castlelyons 2-19 Aghada 0-8.

Heartiest Congratulations and well done to our Under 21 hurler who lit up an otherwise tame season by taking the East Cork Under 21 A hurling title in Dungourney last Sunday. The build up to the game was interesting as we had a narrow victory over them in the round robin, but they were missing their best minors on the day. Then we had a tough game against the ‘Hill the week before and Aghada had a comprehensive win over a fancied Carrigtwohill side two weeks previously. So, the stage was set for a battle royal as referee Niall O Neill donned the field with qualified linesmen, umpires and the whole plant. This is something we take for granted but it is difficult to muster a team of officials these days and we badly need a few badly ourselves.

Winter hurling does not lend itself to classy stuff and this was a typical November day, wet and windy at times. We found the going tough but were up for the game as Peter Roche put us up 0-1 and Dave Morrison had 0-3 sandwiched by one from Aghada. Alan Terry had another 0-1 for Aghada. Our lads began to hurl well all over the field. John Paul was good in goal and the full back line of Jamie O Leary, Conor McCarthy and Stephen Casey were very strong in clearing their lines. Keith O Leary tuned in with four great points to put us up 0-8 to 0-4 at half time. Incidentally Alan Terry had all the Aghada scores and was doing well.

Four points is nothing in hurling and with Aghada anything is possible, so the game was anything but over. However, we started well in the second half with Barry Murphy and Peter Roche strong in the middle and, indeed, all our lads were hurling for their lives. They were fouled a bit thus affording a deadly accurate Keith O Leary to plant 0-3 from frees early in the first half as Ian Riordan and Mark Spillane had 0-1 apiece. While Aghada had a few points, they were not able to stay with us. We were well on top for a finish as Shane Flynn, James Kearney and Ian Riordan had points and Dave Morrison showed a lot of class in pulling first time to the net for us. Finally, Niall O Leary closed out the game with a great goal. Afterwards to the applause of a sizable crowd Jerome O Brien, Vice Chairman of East Cork Board presented the Ben Purcell Cup to our captain Keith O Leary. Well done boys and especially also to our management Anthony Spillane and Colm Barry great men who are playing senior and putting stuff back into the local game. Also, Eoin Maye who helped as Colm had a bigger assignment on Saturday.

It is nice great to win an East Cork but knowing the lads they will be making a big effort in the county and now face Newcestown in the first round next Saturday. They defeated Kilbrittan in the Carbery final and are a team to be respected. We wish our corner back who missed the final Redmond Walsh a speedy recovery from a nasty eye injury received in the last game
