Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Club Notes 14.04.2016

Positive Role Models;

As match season is almost in full swing, it’s time to take a few minutes to consider how we as parents, can be a positive role model to our children and encourage them throughout their sporting careers, however long it may/may not last. At a young age, we get our children involved in sport for a variety of reasons; to make friends and have fun, to be active and learn new skills, to get out in the fresh air.

We must ensure that our players are enjoying their training and match sessions. After all, isn’t that what brought them there in the first place! In a time, when electronic gadgets are everywhere and in every home, it is very easy to choose the option of staying home on a rainy night or not travel to a match because it’s too far away.

Positive parental involvement can help develop important skills such as self-esteem, motivation and social skills. Parents have one of the most important roles in player development.

As a coach and club, it is our job to encourage children to develop their own self-awareness of skills, to boost self confidence in our players and help them to become part of the team.

What not to Say;

Did you win? You played rubbish? Why did you do that? You’re so talented! You were much better than… It doesn’t matter… False Praise.

What to Say;

Did you have fun? How did you play? What did you learn? What would you do differently next time? Did you try your hardest? Well Done. I’m proud of you…

Sciath Na Scol;

We would like to wish all our players from Castlelyons National School the very best of luck as they take part in the annual Sciath Na Scol, commencing this week. The boys have been training very well with their club to date and we look forward to supporting them over the coming weeks. #CastlelyonsAbu.

U9/U10;

With the Rebel Og blitzes cancelled last weekend due to the recent bad weather, we instead took up the invitation of our neighbours St Catherine’s, playing both football and hurling last Saturday morning in Ballynoe .This proved a very good workout for our U10s who found the pace of the game much faster that what we have been used to up to now and we spent most of the first half on the back foot. We did raise our game in the second half put the lack of training on the pitch showed with our lads. We followed up with a football match, where we performed much better putting together some lovely scoring moves with some great goals by Eoin McMurtry and Luke Morrison.

Our U9s also played St Catherine's in what turned out to be a very even contest in both football and hurling and there is great potential among this group of lads.Thanks to St Catherines for the invite and we look forward to return leg during the year.

U9/10 panel on the day was ; Tom O'Neill, Kevin Barry, Torin O'Brien, Sean Og Maguire, Luke Morrison ,Jack Reals, Dylan Leetch, Adam Lardner, Jack Burke, Rory Condon, Cathal Sheehan, Sean O'Callaghan,,Jack Cremin, Eoin McMurtry, Olan Lenehan,Aaron Goggin, Patrick Dooley, Ruairi Counihan, David Hegarty & Keelan Buckley.

U9/U10 Hurling Training Continues this Saturday @10 am on the pitch.

U11/U12;

Last Friday we travelled to Kerry Pike to take on Lee Gaels in our U12 Football league. Given the week we had, we were lucky to get a dry, if windy hour. While we tried our best, on the day, Lee Gaels were too good for us and with the wind against us in the first half, we left ourselves too much to do in the second half.
Well done to all our lads and thanks to all who drove as it was an early throw in.
Our panel on the night was: Jack Cremin, Olan Lenehan, Cormac Fleming, Mark Cullinane, Darren Counihan, Gearoid O Sullivan, Mathew Rossner, Marc Callanan, Cees Kowenberg, Leon Shanahan, Anthony Moran, Will Buttimer, Oisin Morrison, Daniel Ryan and Brian Spillane.
Our focus will switch to hurling next weekend with training during the week.

U16;

Our match against White’s Cross was cancelled due to an unplayable pitch, because of the recent bad weather. Our U16’s have been training very well, with great numbers showing up on a weekly basis. There is great credit due to all the lads for continuously turning up, in sometimes not such great conditions. They certainly don’t lack in commitment which is a great trait, especially at this age group.

Our training continues weekly with notification being sent by text.

U18;

2nd Round Minor A Hurling League Castlelyons 3-15 Valley Rovers 1-15.

Our minor hurlers played on Saturday evening in a bitterly cold Castlelyons, in which conditions were poor but thankfully the rain held off for the duration of the match.

Given the conditions, the game was very entertaining with great hurling on display especially from the castlelyons players, who were up against a very physical outfit in Valley Rovers.

Having welcomed back our Cork Minor Captain, Niall O Leary, he played full forward due to the absence of Barry Murphy, we raced into an early lead with Niall scoring an excellent goal, which he rifled into the top right corner. We drove on from this and after 10 minutes, we were leading 2-04 to 0-03. The supply of ball coming from the half back line and midfield was excellent, into the forwards which attributed to this.

Our two younger players, Jack Kenny and James Kearney were especially to the fore and played some great and intelligent hurling beyond their years. Fifteen minutes into the game we lost Jamie O Leary, who up until then was having an excellent game driving on everything from the back, due to injury to his knee. We finished up the first half on a scoreline of 3-08 to 0-08.

At the start of the second half Valley Rovers came out with all guns blazing and put up two points within the first three minutes of play. Again, we rallied, and with Niall O Leary now playing centre back, we imposed ourselves more in the half back line and cut out any kind of come back for Valley Rovers.

James Kearney switched to mid field with Jack Kenny, and the two shut up shop to stop Valley Rovers getting onto any loose ball. Keith O Leary, playing at centre forward, had a great game and put over some beautiful scores. Ian O Riordan and David Morrison put in a great shift playing at wing forward and really were on top of their men for the whole game giving them no easy clearance without possession.

When the referee blew the final whistle, we were deserved winners against a strong Valley team, final score 3-15 to 1-15. Overall, this was another great team performance which hopefully will continue before our break for exams.

Our next match is against Courcey Rovers at home, which is being played this Thursday with a throw in at 7.30.

Finally, we wish Jamie O Leary a speedy recovery from his knee injury sustained in this game. Hopefully Jamie will be back on the pitch in no time.

Lotto;

The Club would like to invite all members where possible to join the Club’s Lotto. The lotto is a major financial contributor to the club and is a much needed source of income. Annual lotto tickets can be purchased from any of the clubs executive members while weekly tickets can be obtained from the many Lotto ticket sellers/businesses in the parish. This Weeks jackpot is a fantastic € 8,200.

Hurling Helmets;

We are hoping to re-use old helmets over the next few months. More details to follow but in the mean time, if you have any old/unused helmets, you can drop them at training.
