Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Club Notes: 10.05.2016

Castlelyons Celebrates 1916;

This weekend sees the parish of Castlelyons celebrate the 100 year anniversary of The 1916 Rising. Because of the affiliations with Thomas Kent, Castlelyons have been knee deep in preparations for a weekend that will see hundreds of people frequent our parish over the coming days. The 1916 Commemoration Committee have been working tirelessly over the past twelve months to include everyone in the celebrations and the Castlelyons Juvenile Club is no exception.

We have a great morning of entertainment lined up for Saturday May 14th, beginning at 9.30am in the community Centre where Dave Broderick will commence with the reading of the proclamation. This will be followed by the raising of the national flag by Eamonn Walsh, a grandnephew of Thomas Kent.

We then move to the main pitch, where we begin a morning of mixed matches, with boys and girls from both the Juvenile and Camogie Club, coming together to play for thirty minutes approximately.

At 11.15am, Castlelyons U12 Boys take on Grenagh in the Football League and this will be played on the Main Pitch.

The U12 girls are away this weekend at the Camann to Thurles and we wish them every success for Saturday. Due to U14 Championship later on Saturday evening, the U14 juvenile’s will not be available to play on Saturday morning but no doubt, they’ll be there to support their friends & team mates on the day.

The U14 & U16 girls will play Kilworth starting at 12.30pm, followed by U18 girls & U16 & U18 boys in the final match of the day at 1.30pm.

There will be tea/coffee and refreshments available as well as the Tuck Shop, so even if you don’t have someone playing on the day, why not come down and have a bite to eat and a chat!

It has the makings of a fantastic day, and we would ask everyone to come out and support our future stars on Saturday morning.

1916 Parade on Sunday May 15th;

Castlelyons Juvenile Gaa has been invited to take part in the parade through the village on Sunday May 15th. Any player or parent who is not marching with Castlelyons National School, is welcome to march behind the Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Banner. We are meeting at the Ball Alley, behind the Community Centre at 12.45pm on Sunday. Looking forward to seeing you there.

Castlelyons V Imokilly – Fr Smith Cup Final;

The celebrations of the Castlelyons 1916 Commemoration kicked off last weekend as we watched Castlelyons take on Imokilly.

Despite the weather, the evening was full of entertainment and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

We had a group of boys from both the U10’s and U12’s representing the Juvenile Club in the pre-match parade as well as playing at half time. The boys were a credit to their managers and parents on the night and put on a great display. A huge thank you to Donal O Callaghan and Declan Spillane for organising the boys so successfully on the night.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the players of both Castlelyons but especially, the Imokilly Hurlers, who took great time signing Hurley’s and standing for photographs on what was a fairly wet and miserable night weather wise. It’s no wonder we have such a great hurling interest in the parish, with such positive role models.

Sciath Na Scol;

We would like to congratulate the Castlelyons Boys, who won both of their matches last week in the Sciath Na Scol. They played Inch in Castlelyons on Wednesday and in what was a tight game, they came out on top at the final whistle, Castlelyons 2-05 Inch 2-03.

On Thursday, we went on to play Killeagh away in Killeagh. In what can only be described as a fine display of hurling, the lads were outright winners, on a score line of Killeagh 0-03 Castlelyons 5-05. Well done to all the lads on the panel and Best of Luck going forward. #Castlelyonsabu.

U9/U10;

U9/10 Training continues every Saturday 10-11 am and Wednesday 7-8pm with the focus changing to Football for the next 2 weeks. Well done to some of our U10s who played so well at halftime of the recent Fr. Smith Cup.

U11/U12;

The last two weeks were very busy for our U12 teams, we played league games against Grenagh in Hurling and Shamrocks in Football. These were two very good, close games. Unfortunately, we finished losing both narrowly but the lads that turned up gave a great account of themselves.

Training continues twice per week but dates vary due to games. All training times and dates are text to parents.

Congrats to all the U12’s involved with the Castlelyons Sciath Na Scoil team, they had two great wins during last week.

Next up is U12 hurling challenge versus Ballyduff on Tuesday, May 10th and Football league on Sat 14th, both of these are home games and all support is greatly appreciated.

U14 Feile (Hurling)

Hard luck to our U14 hurlers who were in Ballynoe on Saturday last, participating in the Rebel Og 2016 Hurling Feile. They beat Grenagh in their match on a score line of Castlelyons 1-03 to Grenagh 0-06. However, they lost out to a strong St Catherine’s team on a score line of St Catherine’s 6-06 Castlelyons 4-02. St Catherine’s went on to qualify from the group and will continue on to the Semi-finals next weekend and we wish them the Best of Luck.

U16;

This week our U16’s played a hurling challenge match away to Lisgoold. With limited numbers on the night, the lads played a great game and you couldn’t but admire their work ethic and commitment.

In what was an awful evening, and conditions weren’t in anyway favourable, the lads played great hurling in the first half. Eoin O Neill, Seamus Morrison worked very well together and left very little ball through in defense. Leon Doocey, Conor Mc Carthy, Peter Roche, dominated the half back line and it showed, with Castlelyons leading the way going in at half time on a scoreline of Lisgoold 0-02 Castlelyons 2-06.

James Kenny was a force to be reckoned with in midfield, giving very little away. Shane Cotter, David, Richard & Declan Morrison were excellent on the half forward line throughout the game. While Shane Flynn was unlucky in the second half hitting a number of wides, his “never give up attitude” was admirable and he powered through the Lisgoold defence time and again constantly keeping them on their toes. Jack Kenny’s first touch last night was very impressive and he hammered home some great scores. The game ended with a final score of Lisgoold 0-09 Castlelyons 3-11.

While it is hard to pick out any one individual, I must mention how impressive Gavin O Neill was in goal. Throughout the match, he constantly shouted encouragement to his team mates and he made at least five outstanding saves. For someone on the younger age bracket, he certainly earned his place on the team.

The attitude of the players was fantastic from the start, knowing that Lisgoold are a grade higher before they even began. Huge praise must go to each and everyone of the lads for playing so effectively on the night. Praise must also go to James O Neill and Mark O Flynn, who obviously have put in great work with the boys over the past few months.

Training continues weekly and players will be notified by text.
