Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Club Notes 19.05.2016 2016-05-19 08:28:00

Castlelyons Celebrates 1916;

Where do we start?? An absolutely fantastic weekend from start to finish, took place in Castlelyons last weekend. We kicked off the morning on Saturday with Eamonn Walsh, a grandnephew of Thomas Kent, raising the tri-colour outside of the Community Centre which was proceeded by the reading of the proclamation by Dave Broderick, secretary of the 1916 Castlelyons Commemoration Committee. This was followed by Ger Broderick, playing a rendition of the national anthem on the pipes accompanied by all the children, parents and supporters.

We began our Mixed Matches with our U8’s & U10’s playing on the main pitch. The coaches from both clubs picked teams from each age group, combining the boys and the girls. They played 3*10 minute matches and finished up just as the sun started to break through. These matches were refereed by our older players and we must say a big thank you to Emily Boyd and Michael Buckley for their time and expertise on the day.

We had a large crowd to support these matches and they were kept refreshed by the Tuck Shop, run jointly on the day by the Camogie and Juvenile clubs. We must also thank everyone that helped out in the Tuck Shop on Saturday last, without whom it wouldn’t have run so smoothly.

At 11.15, we saw the U12 boys take on Grenagh as part of their Football League Campaign. This turned out to be a great game and the lads on both sides gave everything.

In Goals we had Darren Counihan, making a welcome return after being out for a while. While we got caught for some goals Darren pulled off some great saves. Our full back line consisted of Daniel Ryan and William Moran, the two boys did all in their power to keep Grenagh and only for them we would have been in trouble.

Half backs were Brian Spillane, Aaron Fenton and Cormac Fleming. These three were under serious pressure at times, but more often than not came out with the ball to keep us in the game. Midfield we had Cees Kowenbourg and Will Buttimer, again big pressure on here but their runs forward helped us to open up the Grenagh defence.

Half forwards were team captain Anthony Moran, Gearoid O Sullivan and Jack Kenny. Also helped by Olan Lenehan, these lads tried to the end against a tough Grenagh defence.

Full forwards Mark Cullinane, Mathew Rosner and Leon Shanahan created some lovely moves resulting in goals and from midfield up we scored some lovely points as well. However, we didn’t get enough scores and had to settle for second best on the day finishing on a score of Castlelyons 5-07 Grenagh 7-05.

At 12.30, we saw the camogie U15 girls take on Kilworth in a challenge match. Kilworth have only set up their Camogie Club this year but arrived with plenty of numbers and played a great match. There was great support around the pitch for both sides and the match went very well.

We finished up with our final mixed match of the day with the U16 & U18 boys combined with the U18 ladies. Shane Hickey and Mark O Flynn took on the duty of managers for the day and while Shane went with the Red bibs, Mark had the orange. With the expert knowledge of our own local legend referee John Lenehan, the whistle went and the entertainment began.

While it was initially thought that this would be a timid match, it turned out to be a cracker. With a fantastic display of hurling on show, it was certainly the highlight of the day. It was a great crowd puller and as the match went on, the spectators grew! As did the number of challenges and goals.

Both boys and girls played gaa and camogie rules respectively, with the only “match rule” being, that the ladies were the only ones allowed to score points or goals. And score they did, with the final result ending up Shane Hickey 4-01 to Mark O Flynn 5-01.

 This match was great fun and a fantastic display of skills were shown throughout the match, with the general consensus being the ladies certainly didn’t hold back on the day. There was a large crowd of children also around for the match and it was great to see such a show the support.

On Sunday, the juvenile club marched with the parade up the main street to the Fr Ferris Park, where the 1916 Memorial monument was being unveiled. Again we had a lovely crowd and the lads did the club proud, carrying some of the flags from the 32 counties.

We would like to thank all the players who played on Saturday and also all the parents who supported the day, along with partaking on Sunday in the parade. We would also like to thank Bridie her help and everyone that helped in anyway, whether it was in setting up pitches, keeping the score board up dated, those who refereed, helped in the Tuck Shop, supplied sandwiches or baking. It was an extremely successful day and on behalf of the Juvenile Committee, we can only offer our sincere thank you to everyone.

 We would also like to commend the 1916 Castlelyons Commemoration Committee, on what was a very successful weekend. We would especially like to the thank Dave Broderick for helping the clubs with the opening ceremony on Saturday morning and making it such a memorable occasion.

U13/U14;

Our U13 boys played their second hurling league match on Monday night away to Valley Rovers in Brinny and so far have 2 wins from 2 games.

After a long journey through teatime traffic, we arrived only to realise we were on the back foot from the start, as we had no subs and we had to rely on Aaron Fenton and Gearoid O Sullivan from the U12’s to make up our numbers. However, this team have a great work ethic and this didn’t deter them in anyway.

From the start we showed the Brinny boys we meant business by getting two early goals. You certainly wouldn’t have known that Aaron Fenton was coming up from U12’s with this performance on goal. With Gearoid O Sullivan and James Cullinane in full back positions, they provided a dense line that Valley Rovers found very tough to break down. Oscar Hallihan coupled with Darragh Spillane and Colm Mc Carthy put on some great displays of hurling, managing to maintain possession for a lot of the game.  Evan Lenehan had a fantastic match, scoring half of the final score. He made two superb goals in quick succession, which in doubt, boosted the confidence of the team for the second half. Paired with Evan, Michael O Sullivan put over three excellent points during the match and again, helped keep the lads on top when they needed it. Ian O Sullivan, Alex Murphy and Michael Griffin were great on the half forward line, supplying plenty of ball their end of the pitch. Our full forwards, Peter Greaney and Ian Ryan worked very well together up front and showed great potential with Ian scoring a goal.

With great encouragement coming from the side-lines, Castlelyons pulled away towards the end of the game and ended on a fantastic result of Valley Rovers 2-02 Castlelyons 4-8. Well done to everyone that played, showing a great team spirit.
