Castlelyons Juvenile GAA Club Notes: 23.05.2016

Best of Luck Castlelyons;

Best Wishes to the Castlelyons Hurlers who take on Iniscarra in Pairc Ui Rinn, this Saturday at 6.15pm in the First Round of the Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship. This team has some fantastic talent, with representatives playing for Cork, UCC, CIT, Mary I and Imokilly teams to name a few.

We would also like to wish the Junior Ladies the Best of Luck as they take on Ballinora in Castle Road, Mahon in the League Final on Tuesday night at 7.30pm. These ladies have fought a hard battle to get to the final and definitely deserve to be there!

We would urge all our parents and juvenile players to support the teams over the coming few days. What a week for the GAA/Camogie in Castlelyons... Nothing beats being there!!

Sponsor;

SuperValu have been a fantastic sponsor to the Juvenile Club down through the years and we would urge all our players and parents to support local and support Riordan’s Supervalu. We gratefully received our sponsorship cheque for this year and would like to extend our sincere thanks to Mike and Martha for everything they have done and continue to do for our club.

Last year Castlelyons Juvenile GAA were the lucky recipient of one of the GAA Kits for Clubs, this is a fantastic initative run by SuperValu’s country wide. The kit was superb and every age group benefitted from it.

Cul Camp;

It’s that time of the year already – Cul Camp registrations will be taken over the coming weeks. Our camp this year will be run from Monday July 4th to Friday July 8th. It will be run for boys and girls aged 6-13.

The camps are structured so that a different aspect of the game is worked on each day and will be overseen by Dave Hegarty and Orla Hallihan.

The programme involves coaching specific skills of the game and the opportunity for children to put into practice what they have learned through small sided games. On the last day of the camp a "blitz" will be organised to provide each child with an introduction to competitive games.

The cost of the camp is €50 for the First Child, €45 for the Second and €40 for the third and subsequent children.

To avoid disappointment, book your place early. It’s a camp, not to be missed.

Sciath Na Scol;

Hard luck to the boys who played two tough matches against Inch and Dungourney respectively last week. The boys put a lot of work and commitment into a tight training schedule over the past number of weeks in the lead up to the games. Their eagerness was one for coaches and parents alike, to be very proud of.

U6/U7/U8;

Our U7/U8 headed to Killeagh on Saturday last to participate in the Rebel Og Blitz. It turned out to be a great day and the boys all got a game on the day. With 18 pitches, 36 teams and over 300 children, it was a superb day and huge thanks to Killeagh for hosting.

The boys played very well and their training skills are improving all the time. We will be holding a Monster Rebel Og Blitz on Saturday June 18th, so keep that date in your diary.

U11/U12;

Congratulations to the U12 Boys who turned out on Saturday last for the Rebel Og East U12C Hurling League Match. We struggled to get to grips with this one for a while but second half goals helped us record a much needed victory.

Great praise should go to the lads for the super win. After a hard week, including two Sciath Na Scol matches, the lads played a great game and finished on a score line of Castlelyons 8-05 Laochra Og 4-04.

Our team on Saturday was:

Aaron Fenton, William Verling, Gearoid O Sullivan, Marc Callanan, Daniel Ryan, Cees Kowenberg, Will Buttimer, Anthony Moran, Brian Spillane, Mathew Rosner, Oisin Morrison, Jack Cremin, Olan Lenehan, Darren Counihan, Peter Milward and Cormac Fleming.

We played Kinsale away in the same competition on Monday 23rd and although the game was at times challenging, we finished on a score of Kinsale 2-08 Castlelyons 3-07. Well done to all the boys who put in great effort to come away with the win. Thanks to all the parents for travelling and being “that extra man on the side-line”.

Training will continue on Tuesday 24th 7-8pm. we also have a home Football league game against Whitechurch this Friday 27th at 7.15pm.

U13/U14;

Our U14 hurlers were in First Round Championship action last Wednesday, but unfortunately came up short against a strong Carrig Na Bhfear side. Gavin O Neill pulled off some excellent saves, which undoubtedly kept down the final score.

Dara Spillane, Oscar Halliahan and Cees Kowenburg worked very hard at the half back line throughout the entire match.

Declan Morrison and Evan Lenehan played with a courageous consistency for the duration, despite being outnumbered almost every time they had possession.

With Colm Mc Carthy, Michael O Sullivan and Eoghan Dolan at the half forward line, the boys fought hard to get through the Carrig Na Bhfear defense but continually pressed on.

When Scott O Brien’s second goal went into the back of the net, it gave the lads a sense of belief and they dug in for the remainder of the first half, with not much between the teams going in at half time.

In the second half, Carrig Na Bhfear took control of the game with a number of goals making the difference.

Our defense of Leon Shanahan, James Cullnane and William Moran, played very well but couldn’t keep the Carrig Na Bhfear forwards at bay. However, there is no question that they played to their full potential and again, never gave up.

While Declan Geary and Alex Murphy found it tough to win the ball at their end, it didn’t stop their enthusiasm and they played every ball as if it was their last.

Carrig Na Bhfear ran out deserving winners.

Although it was a disappointing night for the team, their dedication and commitment never once waivered throughout the game. I’m sure there will be much better match days ahead for this superb group of lads.

U15 Super 10 Blitz;

The Rebel Og Under 15 Munster Super 10 Blitz will be held this Saturday in Killeagh. James O Neill and Mark O Flynn held a training session last Saturday for all those that would like to be involved.

The Munster Super 10’s is a competition run by Munster Coaching & Games for clubs throughout the Province. It is played at 10 a side with a panel of 12 players and is open to all clubs with a choice to play football or hurling. The games are fast, action packed and competitive. The novelty of playing 10 a side in the Munster Super 10’s has proven a big hit with the players as it is a refreshing change to the 15 a side game.

Each club plays 3 games on the day and the group winners will advance to the finals in Mallow on the 11th June. Games are played at 10 a side and the games are played 21 to 21 using u12 size portable goal posts. The games are approximately 12 minutes per half but after playing 3 games this is more than adequate. Clubs are asked to guarantee all players a minimum of 30 minutes playing time.
All participating squads will receive a specially commissioned training top while the outright winning teams in both codes will receive gear bags for all 12 squad members.

This is a great opportunity for the lads in increase their skill and knowledge along with having a bit of fun on the day. We wish James, Mark and the boys the very best of luck.

U18;

With exam time looming, the lads have completed a couple of light training sessions over the past number of weeks. The management team would like to wish the best of luck to all their players doing exams and are looking forward to getting back to training and matches soon.

Lotto;

Our own lotto stands at a massive €9,400. Tickets can be purchased in Mc Donnells Coolagown, The Post Office Castlelyons, Fitzgerald Butchers Fermoy and from the usual ticket sellers and promoters. With a great return for your €2, it’s worth a go!!!
