Castlelyons Camogie Club Notes: 30.08.2016.

Castlelyons Junior Ladies reach Junior C Championship Final.

On Sunday last, we headed to Castle Road, Mahon on what can only be described as a glorious day for a game of camogie. After a lot of hard work, training and commitment, the team had reached the semi-final of the SE Systems Junior C Championship 2016.

Having played Blarney last year away, we knew we would have to work hard and keep our heads down to make good headway against them. With over 36 players on this panel, competition for places on this team was always going to be fierce. Cathal Sheehan oversaw the game and blew the whistle to commence. Castlelyons put in a phenomenal first half display with our defence of Louise Mc Gann, Aine Brien and Cait Mc Carthy, completely on top, keeping Blarney almost scoreless for the entire first half. Within the first four minutes of the game, we had two goals and a point on the scoreboard. Aishling Hartnett and Maria Daly seized their opportunities well to put another two goals and a point to the tally, along with some great points from Melissa O Sullivan and Aibhinn O Sullivan.

Aibhinn O Sullivan, Clodagh O Flynn and Melissa O Sullivan dominated the midfield with outstanding back up from Michelle Hartnett, Niamh Barry and Billie Shanahan. Every girl worked tirelessly keeping the sliotar

Emily Sexton scored a great point from play in the twentieth minute. With the next puck out Blarney were on the attack and scored a point. It wasn’t long before the sliotar was back in the hands of Emily Sexton which she blasted into the back of the net. After twenty five minutes, Castlelyons were leading comfortably 5-05 to 0-01. This didn’t stop Maria Daly scoring another great goal and a point before the first half blew up. It was half time and we came off with a great score line of Castlelyons 6-06 to Blarney 0-01. We assembled at half time and reminded ourselves there was still another 30 minutes to play and no matter how great a lead, the second thirty minutes are the hardest to play and the toughest to defend. With two minutes played in the second half, Aishling Hartnett tapped in her third goal of the match, you either have it or you don’t and she certainly does, in buckets! Blarney came back and fought hard and tough for every ball. With a strong breeze in their favour, they scored three points in quick succession before Katie Riordan (having replaced Clodagh O Flynn) latched onto the sliotar and scored a great point. Emily Sexton then scored a rocket of a goal. It’s all or nothing and Emily certainly gave it her all.

Blarney gained possession and headed for the Castlelyons goal, when a player from the opposing team collided with Nicole Barry and knocked her into the goal post. Nicole went down and didn’t come back up, which led to a flurry of activity from the bench. Nicole, who has been outstanding throughout the league and championship campaign this year, got a back knock and had to be replaced! Echoes of “Who is good enough to replace Nicole?” came from the bank of supporters around the pitch. The dubious task fell to Aine Brien and Deirdre Barry was substituted on to cover Aine’s defence position. Castlelyons were back on the scoreboard with a well-earned point from Marie Therese Murphy following Nicole’s departure. However, Blarney having rested and re-grouped for the few minutes during the stoppage of play, came at the Castlelyons defence hard and fast scoring a goal and three points before we could reply. Some substitutional changes were made with Grainne Mc Carthy, Isabel Fenton and Teresa O Connor replacing Emily Sexton, Aisling Hartnett and Melissa O Sullivan. While two Blarney players picked up yellow cards, the Castlelyons team continued to press on for the last ten minutes. Teresa O Connor scored a great point from play. In the searing heat, the scores were few however, Isabel Fenton wasn’t leaving the pitch without a score and true to form, struck a tremendous goal in the dying minute of the game to secure a well fought victory in what was an epic performance from each and every player. Final Score Blarney 1-07 Castlelyons 9-09. Castlelyons Camogie Junior C Ladies have reached the Championship Final, a sentence everyone involved in the camogie club has been itching to say with years. And it’s finally here. You read it right, Castlelyons Camogie Junior C Ladies have reached the Championship Final. And they certainly deserve to be there. The final is due to be played on Saturday September 3rd against Ballinora in Castle Road, Mahon.
