Castlelyons GAA Weekly Lotto 9.1.16.

This Draw was held in the Community Centre and the numbers drawn were 7, 11, 13 and 25. There was no winner. The following won €20 each in the Lucky Dip Draw: - Declan Whelan. Margaret Walsh. Thomasina Hegarty. Martina Minihane. Tina Walsh John Healy (Jnr). Murphy Family. Eoin O Brien.

Castlelyons back in training.

Well its back to the grind as our adult hurling and football panels have commenced training. The players must decide whether to participate in the East Cork Junior football league. Last year Castlelyons reached the East Cork Junior A Final but just came up short against Cloyne without any league football so maybe participation may improve our football and toughen up players. However, we’ll know in time.

UCC 0-22 Cork 1-13 

The Cork hurlers played UCC in the Canon O Brien Cup in the Mardyke on Friday evening. This was the fifth year of the Cup and after four defeats the College took it this year. The weather was good, and calm with the temperature at 11 degrees and entirely suitable for hurling. While the song goes down the Mardyke and each elm tree we were looking for the clash of the ash. However, it was a timid affair with an amount of hand passing and a lot of wides by a young Cork outfit.

There were five Waterford players in the UCC team which included Ian Kenny, Ballygunner, a former Castlelyons man and son of the late Thomas Kenny, Castlelyons. Ian Kenny also played for Waterford against Limerick on Sunday in the Munster Senior hurling league and is going well. Our own lads did well for UCC. Colm Spillane had a solid game at full back, Anthony started at corner forward and was busy scoring a point before being withdrawn at half time as he is nursing an injury. Then Jack Barry came on in goals at half time and made a few good saves and his puck outs were bullet like and accurate. Alan Cadogan who lined out for UCC was outstanding and I can see this fellow cutting through for Cork in the championship this year and another man in form was Billy McCarthy of UCC, a Tipp man, who scored five points from play. They should have a good Fitzgibbon Cup.

The Cork team were mostly the U21 squad with Luke Meade, Conor Lehane and Chris O Leary looking sharp. They played Kerry again on Sunday in the Munster SHL and won well in the end after some anxious moments earlier. Colm Spillane was a sub but did not get game time. Cork had a power of young players on the team and Shane Kingston banged over 0-9 including 0-6 from play and it was great to see Christopher Joyce back after a lengthy injury. There are signs of recovery with great energy but patience is required.

Happy birthday to our man Jack Barry who celebrated his 21^st in style on the ould sod in Barry’s Rathcormac on Friday night. With the last few years whether in goals or wing forward Jack was the good young fellow so now at 21 it’s cometh the man cometh the hour. Best of luck Jack in your studies, sport and life.

Health and Welfare Officer.

Tom Carroll has taken up as our Health and Welfare Officer and will be undergoing some training shortly. The aim to assist with the health and welfare of all our members and ensure that it is at the core of club activity. Tom will be talking more about this at club meetings in the future.
