Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 27.2.17 2017-03-01 16:48:00

Castlelyons play two Intermediate Hurling Challenges in the last week.

Castlelyons 4-10 Fr O Neills 1-13.

This game was played under lights at home last Tuesday night with James Bermingham the whistler for the night. The game was close and keenly contested for the first half with the referee having to issue warnings to players. We done well in the backs and up front the forwards keep the score board ticking over with scores from E Maye, D Lawlor and C McGann, 0-1 each. R Fenton 0-2 and Alan Fenton had 1-2 (goal from a penalty and 0-2 from frees). We led at half time on the score 1-7 to 1-6.

We got really on top early in the second half as A Fenton had an early goal for us through a 21-metre free and we banged over a few points through E Maye, C McGann, Ml Spillane 0-1 each and at goal at the end from R Bransfield. A little worry was that Fr O Neills scored 0-7 unanswered at the end. However, we gave all our subs a run and Fr O Neills latest star Declan Dalton came on for the second half and did create a bit of havoc. Overall this was a great workout for our lads and they showed lots of promise despite missing many regulars. Final Score Castlelyons 4-10 Fr O Neills 1-13

Team: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Robbie Feeney, Colm O Neill, Tom Carroll, Keith O Leary, Michael Spillane, Eoin Maye, Darragh Lawlor, Ciaran McGann, Ronan Fenton, Alan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan Ronan Bransfield. Subs: - Ronan O Regan, Brian O Donovan, Ml John Dorgan, Alan O Regan, Darren Tobin.

Castlelyons 2-13 Dungourney 1-13.

We played Dungourney at home on Sunday morning at the unusual time of 10.30 am. The morning was very wet and windy, indeed, so much so that the covered dug out on the far side was tested but immediately vacated so bad was the rain and winds. The referee Ger Scully did well on the day despite such conditions. We played well and with scores from D Tobin, C McGann, Ml Spillane, R Fenton, A O Sullivan all 0-1 each and A Fenton 0-2 (1 free and 1 play) we led 0-8 to 0-2 at half time. It was unfortunate that Darren Tobin received a shoulder injury just before half time and was replaced by Brian O Donovan. We wish Darren a speedy recovery.

Again, we continued to do well against the wind in the second half as Ronan O Regan goaled early and we had 0-2 from Ml Spillane (1 play and 1 long range free), 0-2 from A Fenton (1 play and 1 free) and E Maye 0-1. All our subs came on and Ml John Dorgan banged in rocket of a goal to put the game beyond Dungourney. This was another good workout for the upcoming League games.

Team: - Shane O Sullivan, Brian Carroll, Colm Barry, Robbie Feeney, Colm O Neill, Tom Carroll, Keith O Leary, Michael Spillane, Eoin Maye, Darren Tobin, Ciaran McGann, Ronan Fenton, Alan Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan Ronan O Regan. Subs: - Brian O Donovan, Ml John Dorgan, Alan O Regan, Mark Murphy, Padraig Murphy and Shane Moroney.

Cork Division 2 Intermediate Hurling League.

We are competing in Division 2 of the Intermediate Hurling League again this season land we have three games coming up in March. We are at home to Castlemartyr, away to Aghada and at home to Kildorrery. Both Castlemartyr and Aghada (Champions) were promoted from Division 3 last year and Kildorrery defeated us 1-17 to 0-18 last year. Hopefully, with many Fitzgibbon Cup stars like the Spillane brothers Colm and Anto plus Barry brothers Colm and Jack, Alan Fenton, Darragh Lawlor and so many good minors of the last few years including former Cork and current St Colman’s captain Niall O Leary, Jamie and Keith O Leary. These are all big-time men. Of course, there are many other lads who have played intermediate for a few years and some older lads have not gone away yet. We must be ready with the right attitude to drive on for promotion and ultimately the Premier Championship crown and we start at home to Castlemartyr this Saturday 4th March at 6.00 pm so let’s hope we can get out a strong outfit agus mar deirtear tosach maith leath na hoibre. Best of luck lads.

East Cork Under 21 B Football Championship.

Castlelyons are out against Youghal in the East Cork Under 21B Football Championship on Sunday at 12 noon and the venue or the referee is not known to date. It is hard to know how we are fixed this year as the first round is early and we haven’t done a lot as many of the lads were playing with the colleges. However, everyone is training and doing gym work all winter so we should be in good shape. Donal Barry and James Maye are the selectors here so best of luck to all.

No luck in Fitzgibbon Cup for UCC.

Well it was the end of the road in Galway for UCC as they were defeated by Carlow IT 2-20 to 1-20 after extra time in the Fitzgibbon Cup semi-final. The Carlow IT team had top class hurling men from unlikely hurling strongholds as there were five Laois men, two Carlow men, a Kerry man and a Meath man on the team. In fact, Stephen ‘Picky’ Maher, Laois scored 0-11 in that game for Carlow and the same player went on to score 1-13 in the final although Mary I, Limerick, were comprehensive winners of the Fitzgibbon for the second season. The lesser counties are improving all the time.

Carlow were managed by the great DJ Carey, Kilkenny winner of nine All Stars. Mary I were managed by Cork’s Jamie Wall a real Cork talent until an abscess on his spine left him paralysed from the midriff down wheelchair bound. So, Jamie deserves our greatest congratulations on an outstanding achievement. Hard luck on our own lads Colm and Anthony Spillane and Jack Barry who lined out with UCC and all done well but it was just not to be.

County Scór Senior Final.

The final of the County Senior Scór Final is now on Sunday 4th March at 6.30 pm in Millstreet.

St Colman’s out on Saturday 4.3.17 in Croke Cup.

St Colman’s College, Fermoy are back in action in the All Ireland Quarter Final of the Post Primary Schools (Under 18.5) A Grade Hurling. There opponents are St Brigid’s Vocational School, Loughrea, Co. Galway as there was a new system introduced in 2014 to allow Vocational Schools compete for the Croke Cup. St Brigid’s defeated a highly-fancied Presentation College, Athenry to win the Connacht title. David Burke and Johnny Coen current Galway hurlers oversee the team and they have a few very tidy hurlers and Galway minors but Colman’s should have both the backs and firepower to take the day. We wish St Colman’s and our own Castlelyons men the best of luck on Saturday as they rise from Harty ache and hit the open road again. Venue and time to be decided.

Fixtures: -

Saturday 4.3.17 in Castlelyons IHL Castlelyons v Castlemartyr at 6 pm.

Sunday 5.3.17: East Cork U21 B Football Championship: Venue TBA; Castlelyons v Youghal
