Best of luck to Liam and Margaret Martin in retirement.

Martin’s Bakery renowned for great bread and a friendly sporting chat has finally closed its doors after over 80 years of service to the people of Castlelyons and the greater area. Liam and his wife Margaret took it over from Liam’s Dad Tommy who started up the business back in 1947 and they have been part of the community for many years. Liam a sporting man of fishing, squash and GAA. Margaret has given so much time to the Pitch & Putt, Community Centre, charities and senior citizens. Of course, Margaret is a Déise woman but Liam is a right Rebel follower and a man who wielded the camán himself on famous Castlelyons teams. Liam had his good years when the great Timmy McCarthy was turning it on for Cork as he was Timmy’s greatest follower. Speaking with Timmy the other night this is something he always appreciated. To Margaret and Liam, their daughter Niamh and family we in Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Caisleán Uí Liathán appreciate your kind support over the years and wish you many happy well deserved years of retirement.

Good runout for Intermediate hurlers on Saturday evening.

Castlelyons 3-17 Kilbrittain 1-22.

Castlelyons played a very useful challenge game at home to Kilbrittain on Saturday evening. The evening was fine and crisp with the ground a little soft but overall good for hurling. We started well with Alan O Regan sending over a beauty from play after an assist by Darragh Lawlor. The Shane Moroney tacked on a good goal and a point. However, Kilbrittain were well in the game as Ross Cashman, Maurice Sexton and Phillip Wall kept the scoreboard ticking over with points. We had three further points from Ronan Fenton, Eoin Maye and Darren Tobin with Cashman and Sexton scoring for Kilbrittain. Then Alan O Regan who was injecting plenty of pace in the game cut through for a goal and Ml John Dorgan lashed a ground shot to the net and Tobin added a point from a free. This left the half time score 3-6 to 1-9.

Niall O Leary opened the shoulders and threw over a point to start us off on for the second half as Aidan O Sullivan, Darragh Lawlor, Tom Carroll had 0-2 each and Shane Moroney done well. Kilbrittain made a game of it in the half as they pressed very hard and Brian Carroll who was doing well had to come off but Mark Murphy was teak tough in his place and Jamie O Leary cleared out a lot of stuff. In general, this was a very good game for our lads and even though we may have been short some of our panel Kilbrittain were short several regulars including their full back John Murphy and two wing backs Michael O Riordan and Padraig Breen. There will be big tests to come including a league game versus Tracton next Sunday at 12 md and Kanturk in the Championship on the 30^th April. We have a few injuries and management are hoping they will clear up for the championship.

Congratulations to Colm O Neill.

Congratulations to Colm O Neill who was a member of the UCC Panel that won the Independent.ie HE GAA Intermediate Hurling Championship on Monday the 27^th Marcy in the WIT Campus. UCC 1-20 UCD 2-10. Colm O Neill was going very well but was injured for both the semi-final and final and hopefully he will be back in action time enough for our own IHC versus Kanturk.

East Cork Junior A Football Championship.

Castlelyons are down to play Aghada in the quarter of the East Cork Junior A Football Championship on Sunday 16^th April. However, due to preparations for the Intermediate Hurling on the 30^th April there may be a postponement requested. In general, football is certainly taking a back seat in East Cork although Aghada and Glenville (who field three teams) work hard at it. There are some representatives who go to Board meetings and give massive political speaks that the Board are doing nothing for football but when league and championship games are fixed the games are not played. Castlelyons have a busy summer with U21 hurling, Jnr B hurling, Imokilly games, Colm Spillane on the Cork team and, of course, the intermediate hurling championship and hopefully these will take us into the short evenings again so maybe we will take the football on the hop and play on the 16^th yet.

Outstanding work by the Camogie Club.

Castlelyons Camogie Club who have furnished and decorated the Tuck Shop. There is a new kitchen, cookers, cleaning facilities and, tables, etc with all safety facilities built in and fitted. This is now a fabulous place to have a cuppa and a chat before during or after the game. So well done to all concerned and with serious planning like this success will follow.

Vote of sympathy.

At our recent monthly club meeting votes of sympathy was extended to the Morrison and Leahy families on recent bereavements. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a ainmneacha dílis.
