Intermediate Hurlers top of League.

Castlelyons 2-14 Tracton 1-14

Castlelyons went to the top of the Division 2 IHL with a hard-fought win over Tracton at Páirc an t’Athair Peadar O’Laoghaire on Sunday last. This was one of their last league game before the championship as both teams are in action shortly. Tracton were missing the Lynch brothers, John and Kieran, and Castlelyons are still down several lads with various injuries and were minus regular goalie Shane O Sullivan on holidays. However, it was great to see Colm Spillane back again from duty with the Rebels and he was in top form for the lads.

We played against the breeze towards the Abbey for the first half and started well as Aidan O Sullivan broke through with speed for a goal in the second minute and went on to add a few points. However, Tracton made a right game of it as their big man David O Callaghan caused us some problems. Their former Cork minor John Good planted a penalty for them and they got some scores from play and frees that we needlessly committed. Alan Fenton and Eoin Maye were on target for us with 0-1 apiece to leave the half time score 1-6 to 1-5 in favour of Castlelyons.

Our lads made a few changes at half time Ronan Bransfield came on for Aidan O Sullivan who went over on his ankle and is now a worry for the championship. Jamie O Leary came on for Declan Varner and Niall O Leary for Mikey Spillane (inj). We started well again in the second half as Alan Fenton hit 0-2 from frees and then Alan banged in a goal after good work by Ciaran McGann and Anto Spillane. Ciaran McGann had 0-1 from play and Alan Fenton struck again for 0-2. Niall O Leary done well in the middle of the field and added 0-2 from play. Again, during this half Tracton kept the scoreboard turning over and remained on our tails as their great free taker Ronan Walsh put over everything. Of course, we gave him the chances too as we were a little reckless in the tackle at times and gave away too many needless frees which I have no doubt the lads will work on. In the end, we were lucky enough to take the win as they hit the crossbar on one occasion with the game in the melting pot. The final score was 2-14 to 1-14 and Tracton left happy enough in defeat as they will have the Lynch brothers back for the championship and they feel there is more in the tank.

Colm Barry went off in the 50^th minute a knee injury which makes him very doubtful for the Kanturk game and this with Aidan O Sullivan getting injured really adds to our woes. It was good to see Anto Spillane and Ronan Bransfield coming back after injuries but they have a bit of work to do to get up to full fitness yet. The contribution of Jamie and Niall O Leary is a big plus for us but these are lads with the Leaving Cert on their minds and as we all know this means so much these days. 

All in all, a reasonable day at the office but plenty to work on for our Manager Mick Spillane and his backroom team. We have moved to the top of the League with seven points from five games and lead the ‘Hill by just a point but they have only three games played. We have yet to play them and that could be a cracker. But next up is our championship tussle with Kanturk and this means a bit of work over the next two weeks. It is unfortunate that the injury list is such a problem but we are good battlers and must be prepared to trust the panel and get time in the zone for this game.

Happy retirement to Bob and Joan McNamara.

Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Caisleán Uí Liathán extends our very best wishes to Bob and Joan McNamara and many happy years of retirement as they have finally decided to call it a day after thirty-four years outstanding service to us all from that lovely shop in the heart of the village. It was a pleasure to call there as we were all met with a friendly face and a good chat. McNamara’s shop was a place to leave a message, keys, sliotars or footballs for teams, a sponsor and provider of so much to our club down the years. Bob has many great stories of London where he worked and rich memories of East Clare where his people were originally from and, of course, many a tune in the accordion down the years in the best traditions of the Banner and he might still play a few. To Bob, Joan, Mary and family happy days and thanks for your great service. 

Best wishes to Doctor Joe Keane on his retirement. 

We wish to extend our very best wishes to Doctor Joe Keane of Deerpark and Fermoy on his recent retirement. Dr. Joe, a Cloch na gCoilte man, and his wife Éileen from Mitchelstown with their family Eoin and Rona settled in Deerpark Castlelyons many years ago and are very involved in our local community. Dr.  Joe has provided a great service to our club and on the odd occasion provided a near miracle as I saw him put back in a player’s shoulder one day and, of course, always on call he often stitched them up at and they still made the Disco rather than having to go to the hospital for hours or overnight. To Joe, Éileen and family happy days and thanks for all your help.
