Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 21.8.17 2017-08-22 14:31:00

U21 Hurlers qualify for East Cork Final.

Castlelyons 4-16 Carrigtwohill 1-11

Castlelyons U21 hurlers continued a mighty vein of form and lit up a poor summer as they defeated Carrigtwohill in the East Cork U21 “A” semi-final last Friday evening in Dungourney with Arthur Murphy on the whistle. We had lined out without Ian O Riordan, injured and Conor McCarthy, holiday, both young lads but had played in the game versus Youghal and done well. Carrig lined out minus their Cork U21 panellist Darren O Driscoll who was on holidays. However, they had all their stalwarts and were favourites on the night.

Castlelyons mentors set up the lads well and had the threat of twin towers Jack Barry and Shane Moroney up front. But the question was would we send in enough ball to our forwards to establish threat and we done this well. We elected to play with the wind in the first half and a good start would be vital as it was telling. John Paul Murphy knows what it’s about in goal and delivered his puck outs well while the full back line of Peter Roche, Declan Varner and Redmond Walsh hurled well from the start with the half back of Jamie O Leary, Shane Fenton and Seamus Moroney tight on their men and strong on the ball. Again, the match up of Jamie O Leary on Liam Gosnell was spot on as Gosnell is a good hurler but as is true to Jamie’s form he wore him down and got on top at a vital time in the game.

The ball was going true to the forwards and both Shane Moroney and Jack Barry had goals in the first half with a selection of points from Pierse Varner, Ml Geary, Jack Barry and an unerring Niall O Leary from frees. Of course, a major part of the Castlelyons platform for success was the mighty play of Niall O Leary backed up well by Barry Murphy at midfield. We led 2-12 to 1-6 at half time and the view was that we needed this lead as the breeze was strong and Carrigtwohill were strong too.

We started well in the second half as Declan Varner and Shane Fenton were excellent as, indeed were all the backs. The standard and level of free taking during the game was of the highest order as Niall O Leary for us and Liam Gosnell for Carrig missed nothing in a kind of a shootout. David Morrison, Ml Geary, Mark Spillane and Pierse Varner showed up for ball and despite their youth were not shy in taking it on as we went on to score another 0-7 with a well taken goal from David Morrison. However, the score of night came as substitute Alex Henley won possession on the wing and made ground and while there was a point on but Henley drew the full back and then slipped the sliotar diagonally to Barry Murphy who clung a cracking goal to end the game as a contest.

Now next up the final of this competition and what a game it promises to be as we take on neighbours Bride Rovers. John Arnold tells me the last big game between the Rovers and Castlelyons was back in 1997 in Midleton in the East Cork Junior final a game Castlelyons won before a packed house and went on to capture the county championship as well. The Rovers qualified because of a hard fought four-point win over Watergrasshill and are laden with senior players and, of course, county minor stars Eoin and Brian Roche. This will be tough for our lads as the Bride will be favourites but we have a bit of time to address matters in training and for a few of the lads recover from knocks as the game is pencilled in for Sunday 10th September and we will have more on it later.

Castlelyons Team Panel: - John Paul Murphy, Peter Roche, Declan Varner, Redmond Walsh, Seamus Moroney, Shane Fenton, Jamie O Leary, Niall O Leary, Barry Murphy, Dave Morrison, Barry Murphy, Jack Barry, Mark Spillane, Shane Moroney, Micheal Geary, Pierse Varner, Jack Ronayne, Andrew O Neill, Alex Henley, Mark Henley, Shane Flynn, Conor McCarthy (holidays), Ian O Riordan (injured)

Dave Kenny in goal for Ballincollig Intermediate Hurlers.

Well done to Dave Kenny who transferred to Ballincollig from Castlelyons earlier this year. Dave, a teacher, was in goal for Ballincollig as they defeated Kilbrittain in the Cork IHC by 1-20 to 2-8. Their regular goalie was injured and Dave came in and had an outstanding game. He is now preparing for the semi – final of the IHC.

Club Member Colm Murphy in All Ireland Golf Final.

The Fermoy Golf Club JB Carr team has had a great summer in Munster with victories over Cobh, Youghal, Doneraile, Mitchelstown and Ballybunion. They defeated Dungarvan in the Munster Final recently and now it’s the All Ireland Finals in Woodenbridge. The JB Carr competition called after the legendary Dr Joe Carr is the Over 60’s Senior Club Championship of Ireland and is an extremely popular competition as over 200 clubs take part. Our own Colm Murphy is on the Fermoy Golf Club team, having taken to the golf big time. Playing in All-Irelands is nothing new to Colm as he won four All Ireland Senior Club championship medals with Nemo Rangers before coming to Castlelyons. In one of the final victories over Scotstown he broke his leg back but came back again to captain the team to another All Ireland over Garrymore, Mayo in 1982. So, he knows what it is to take the pressure and to turn over the big ones and we wish Colm and Fermoy the best in Woodenbridge as they are due to be played shortly.

Castlelyons Boys on County Panels.

Congrats to Leon Doocey who has been selected on the Cork U15 hurling panel that take part in tournaments in both Cork and Clare this week end and to James Kearney who is selected on the cork U16 Hurling Panel to take part in the All Ireland U16 hurling championship this Saturday. Certainly, our Juvenile Section are in line with Rebel Óg as this underage set up is clicking into place and providing a supply to county teams. No doubt these boys will help put Castlelyons in a good place into the future and we wish them the very best at the weekend.

Castlelyons festivities end with bumper weekend.

Well Castlelyons had some weekend of entertainment culminating with a massive Sunday with the big game in Páirc an Athar Uí Laoghaire, a “Taste of Cork and Waterford” in the Marquee and a family fun day in Fr Thomas Ferris Park. Despite a wet morning the day held up and a strong crowd turned up at all events. Congrats to St Catherines played Lisgoold in the East Cork hurling semi – final and they got on top in a tough encounter laced with plenty of good hurling. The Cats are on the way back as they have a lot of good hurlers with the likes of Dan Mangan, Brian Mulcahy and Shane Cotter with Cal Aherne both travelling from Dublin and Tullamore they will be a serious force in the final against the winners of Russell Rover / Carrignabhfear. Lisgoold have made great strides in the hurling and no doubt they day will come in time. Well done and thanks to all our stewards who worked hard on the day with traffic and ticket sales, etc.

Best wishes to Jim Sheehan.

Best wishes and a speedy recovery to Jimmy Sheehan, a strong supporter of our club who took ill on Sunday morning while preparing for the Festival Day in Fr Ferris Field. No doubt will be back again well and active shortly.
