Castlelyons qualify for East Cork Junior B Hurling Championship Semi – Final.

Castlelyons 4-19 Aghada 0-11

Our Junior B hurlers got value for the long journey to Rostellan on Monday evening as they defeated the home side Aghada comprehensively in the East Cork Junior B Championship. They now play St Catherines in the semi-final and this has the ingredients of being a cracking derby. But back to the Aghada game and we started well with Ronan O Regan and Ronan Fenton in top form getting 0-1 apiece. Then Ronan O Regan cut in from midfield and laid off to Ml John Dorgan who rode the tackle and blasted a powerful shot to the net. Inside a minute Michael John was on target again with another powerful shot to the net to put us up 2-2. Then Shane Moroney had 0-3 from play and Shane Moroney 0-1 to put us 2-6 to 0-3 up with just 15 minutes gone. Then Ronan O Regan, Ronan Fenton and Chris Cotter to leave us to leave us comfortable 2-9 to 0-6 at half time. Marcus Leahy and Danny Creedon were trying hard for Aghada but it was obvious they were finding it so hard to stay with Castlelyons who were playing well all over the field.

On the resumption Ronan Fenton had 0-1, Shane Moroney 1-0 and Colm O Neill 0-1 leaving the game as good as over at 3-11 to 0-6. Castlelyons then withdrew Ronan O Regan who had played some mighty hurling and Shane Fenton who did very well at the back. They introduced Mike Geary and Mark Spillane and we kept on going as M J Dorgan finished off his hat trick of goals and we had further points from Shane Moroney 0-2, Chris Cotter and Ronan Fenton, Mark Spillane 0-1 and yes that man Ml John Dorgan again 0-1. Well what can be said but well done to the management and players on a convincing championship victory. This type of facile victory cannot be taken serious and every effort will have to be made to get in the zone for the semi-final against much tougher opposition. Nevertheless, while our forwards get the accolades on raking up a strong score our goalie was sound and our backs were tenacious and tight all throughout the game and we are making good progress so keep it up folks.

Castlelyons 2-10 Sarsfields 1-26.

Despite a reasonable first half defeat was our lot against Sarsfields in this important Junior B league game at home on Tuesday 22.8.17 last. Mike Hegarty had a point after 3 minutes and it took Sarsfield a while to get going as our lads fought well but then Sarsfields rattled off 1-4 without reply. However, Chris Cotter had a goal for us sandwiched between two good points by Ronan O Regan and Noel McAuliffe to put us right back in the game. Sarsfields hit us for 0-3 again and then John Paul Murphy clung a penalty in the 26^th minute as Sarsfields had a further 0-3 and Ronan O Regan had 0-1 on the stroke of half time to leave the score 2-4 to 1-10 in favour of Sarsfields.

Sarsfield dominated the second half but points from Ronan O Regan0-2, Alan O Regan 0-1, Mike Hegarty, 0-1, Timmy McCarthy 0-1 and Noel McAuliffe 0-1 kept the score respectable. This defeat was somewhat disappointing for us as our chance of making the league final seams bleak now. However, it was good practice for the championship game versus Aghada and hopefully we will up our game a bit more.

Our club wishes to congratulate Sarah Morrison who recently won the All Ireland U16 1,500 metres in and Caoimhe Gray Walsh who was an U10 semi-finalist in the Community Games recently held in Abbotstown. A great honour for the girls, their parents and St Nicholas Athletic Club.

Sunday – All Ireland Hurling Final Day – Castlelyons involved with Cork and Waterford.

Well next Sunday is All Ireland Hurling Final day with over 82,000 spectators expected in Croke Park for the battle of Galway and Waterford and yes Cork minors are back in the big time after a lengthy absence when they take like Waterford take on Galway. This Cork minor team have travelled a long road to the final with good wins in Munster over Waterford, Tipperary and Clare in the final. Galway beat Clare in the Quarter Final and had just a point to spare over Kilkenny in the semi-final while Cork were again convincing with a four-point win over Dublin in their semi-final. Cork have top marksmen in the series with Brian Turnbull hitting 0-44 and Daire Connery 0-27 in their five games to date and must have a right chance in the final.

Our own man Barry Murphy an ever present on the panel this year has suffered injury but has come in most games and done very well as he is lightning fast with an eye for goal. He is going well and ready for the call up either from the start or if introduced. A great honour for Barry, his parents and our club. It is interesting to note that Castlelyons have had a great representation over the years with Cork in All Ireland Minor hurling finals with John Murphy at full forward in the 1975 final but losing to Kilkenny. Timmy McCarthy was on the winning side in 1995 at centre forward when Cork defeated Kilkenny. Eoin Fitzgerald and Peter Murphy were wing forwards as Cork beat Kilkenny again in the 1998 final. Eoin Fitzgerald hit a resounding 1-24 in just four games that Cork played that year to win it out. Our club now wishes Barry Murphy and neighbouring minor stars the Roche twins, Bride Rovers, Liam O Shea, Lisgoold, Brian Lenihan, Ballyhooly and the entire Cork panel and management this very special day All Ireland Sunday and hoping the Irish Press Cup will come back again to Cork as its away with a while. Lest we forget we also have that very quiet man powerful in knowledge and application to sport namely our own Stephen Barrett of Coolagown. Stephen is helping Waterford in their quest to bring the McCarthy Cup to the Déise for the first time since 1959. Stephen who played underage and senior hurling for Castlelyons and was a professional cyclist for some time has studied sport to an extremely high level attaining a Masters in Exercise Physiology at Loughborough University and is now a lecturer in Sports Science in the Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Science at Waterford Institute of Technology. He is also a qualified Nutritionist and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and is a valued member of the Waterford backroom team with a few years in this capacity. So, we wish Stephen and the Déise boys the best on Sunday too.

Intermediate Hurling League Game.

Our Intermediate hurlers are back in action again on Friday 31.8.17 as they play Watergrasshill away in a most important league game. They game is down for 7pm in the ‘Hill with James Bermingham pencilled in as Reitóir.

Castlelyons GAA Weekly Lotto Draw - Monday 28.8.17.
