Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 4^th September 2017

Castlelyons play Bride Rovers East Cork Under 21 A Hurling Final on Sunday.

All roads lead to Lisgoold on this Sunday for a 2pm start in this local Derby Castlelyons versus Bride Rovers. This championship is diluted somewhat as many East Cork teams are now taking part in the new County Premier Under 21 Competition. Nevertheless, has provided interesting games to date. Bride Rovers amassed a massive 7-38 conceding 7-31 in their two games against very strong opposition. Castlelyons in their two games done well also scoring 9-32 and conceding 3-27 and while Youghal were short a few players for the first game Carrigtwohill were very strong and favourites for the semi-final our lads done well to qualify.

There are several quality players on each side. Bride Rovers will be driven on by top senior players Cian O Connor, Billy Finnegan and Shane Walsh with the Roche Twins, Brian and Eoin of the Cork All Ireland Final team to mention a few and are strong favourites for Sunday. However, Donal Barry, Manager, James Maye, Larry Murphy, Colm Barry and Darren Tobin, selectors, have done a lot of great work with our lad’s and will be looking to last year’s county minor captain Niall O Leary, a fit again Jack Barry, Shane Moroney, Declan Varner, Dave Morrison Jamie and Keith O Leary and, of course, Barry Murphy of the Cork All Ireland Final team last Sunday. It is unfortunate that our corner back Peter Roche is not available for this one as he has shown great promise all year but the run of games will stand to him for the future. Sunday’s final has all the ingredients of being a thriller so it’s down to a good hurling attitude and drive to take the day. You can’t beat being there so looking forward to good support and best of luck to all.

Commiserations to Cork Minor Hurlers but well-done Barry Murphy.

Cork minors were back in the big time in minor hurling last Sunday against Galway and came up short at the end by just two points on a score 2-17 to 2-15. As we said last week this Cork minor team travelled a long road to the final with good wins in Munster over Waterford, Tipperary and a replay and Clare and Dublin. Many of the panel were also involved in U17 All Ireland winning team which involved a lot of games. Then there was the matter of college games, club games at minor, U21 and risk of injury and a dose of hurling. On the other hand, Galway would have coasted to the final with just two games and have a serious hurling environment to back it up to there was little chance of tiredness or burnout with those boys. Credit Cork they got off to a great start and made a game of it all the way but just failed coming up the home straight. Special congratulations again to our own Barry Murphy who was introduced in the 45^th minute and had a massive game as he won several possessions, gave some great passes and scored a fine point and at one stage it looked as if his introduction could have swung the day. At last night’s monthly meeting he paid special compliments by Chairman Maurice Carroll as Maurice outlined Barry on the day was a credit to our himself, his family and our club. This fine minor team will no doubt continue to develop and we will see many done the red jersey in the future. However, we must have the right understanding between club and county, the right training/coaching environment keeping these lads’ sweet and no doubt Cork will be a winner big time yet.

Commiserations to the Déise boys as Galway proved the better side before a full house in the senior game. This was a titanic struggle and shows the effort necessary to take an All-Ireland nowadays. Galway have been at the door for a few years and about deserved it as that master of hurling, Joe Canning, finally got his medal. Waterford can do it into the future if they persevere but of course the Rebels will be all out again and what about Davy. So, looking forward to a cracking 2018 already.

Castlelyons GAA Weekly Lotto Draw - Monday 11.9.17.

Major Fundraising Draw.

Treasurer Donal O Leary informed the recent monthly meeting of a forthcoming major fundraising draw for the Adult, Juvenile and Camogie Clubs. He outlined that there was an excellent fundraising committee in place and that the draw would have over €3,000 in prizes with tickets priced at €10 each. There will be an official launch shortly so watch this space for more details.

Votes of Sympathy.

Our Club wishes to extend sincere sympathy to the Kearney, O Sullivan, Sheehan, Fitzgerald families on recent bereavements. Also, a sincere sympathy to the Murphy family on the death of Richard who recently passed away after a brief illness. Richard, played on Castlelyons teams for many years and was a great supporter of our club. He was an outstanding sportsman and had a keen interest in the greyhounds and coursing. At our recently monthly meeting Chairman Maurice Carroll on behalf of the club expressed condolences to his wife Ann, sisters Mary and Eileen and his brother John and Thomas. Maurice also thanked all those who attended at the funeral and performed Guard of Honour. Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a nainmeacha go Léir.
