Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 13.11.17

Castlelyons get over the ‘Hill to take Division 2 League

Castlelyons 1-15 Watergrasshill 0-9

Well this game finally took place in Killeagh last Saturday and the game as a derby promised a lot but did not live up to expectations as conditions were tough. However, we must thank Killeagh for use of their pitch and as said earlier this year the whole complex is a credit to them as they are keeping pace with modern requirements. Arthur Murphy was on the whistle and due to the soft conditions, it was difficult, but he done well overall. Watergrasshill started well but missed a free and we were driven on by a strong midfield of Colm Spillane and Eoin Maye as Mike Spillane, Darragh Lawlor and Ronan O Regan had 0-1 apiece and Kevin O Neill was wide again for the ‘Hill. Mike Spillane had another 0-1 from a free and the ‘Hill scored 0-2. Then on 12 minutes Darragh Lawlor cut in from the wing and banged in a rocket of a goal. Jack Barry was doing well in goals at the other end and the full back line of Brian and Tom Carroll with Colm Barry at full done well and repelled a lot of pressure as Aidan O Sullivan had 0-1 and M Spillane 0-2 from frees as the half forward line of S Moroney, C McGann and D Lawlor were going well. Despite the ‘Hill putting 0-2 more on the board our dominance continued to the short whistle A O Sullivan got 0-1 from Play and it was the Mike Spillane show with two more points to leave it 1-10 to 0-4 at half time.

Watergrasshill made a game of it in the second half and at one stage managed three points on the trot. However, our lads fought hard especially the half back line of Declan Varner, Jamie O Leary and Niall O Leary. Tempers boiled a few times and the referee done well to keep minds focused on hurling. Mike Spillane made a massive contribution again in the second half from frees and play with 0-3 while Colm Spillane and Darragh Lawlor had 0-1 apiece leaving the final score Castlelyons 1-15 and Watergrasshill 0-9. The Cup was presented to vice-captain Ciarán McGann after the game by Dick Fitzgerald Cork Bounty Board and the celebrations followed on. Our regular captain Anthony Spillane is out injured with a while but on the mend and should be back in form next year.

This was a good win for Castlelyons as we have taken the Division 2 IHL League Cup and well done to the players and the selectors Mick Spillane, John McCarthy and Colm Crowley. Overall, we have suffered few defeats this year except our early demise in the championship as we were beaten by eventual winners Kanturk and Fr O Neills after some freak scoring and a great fightback by our lads. Of course, we have a great chance of setting the record straight in the Abernathy Cup Final as we take on Fr O Neills again shortly. Castlelyons Abú.

Castlelyons in East Cork Division 3 Football League Final.

Castlelyons play Carrigtwohill in the East Cork Division 3 Football League Final on Saturday 18.11.17 at 3pm. Our lads played four games in the League winning three drawing one and being awarded the points in their last game. We won two games in the championship defeating our league rivals Carrigtwohill in a dour battle 0-8 to 0-4 and Aghada 0-13 to 2-2. We suffered an unlucky defeated 1-13 to 1-10 to Erins Own in the semi-final as this was a game that was ours but for a few misfortunate incidents. Incidentally Erins Own went on to win the East Cork Final and then reached the county final but were defeated by Knocknagree. We are not far off a success in football so now let us finish off the year with a good result in the league. We wish the lads and the management team of Donal O Leary, Tom Carroll and James Moroney the best for Saturday. Castlelyons Abú.

Cork GAA Strategic Plan 2015-2018

The document has now been published and circulated for some Christmas reading. It is relatively easy stuff and runs to 29 Pages. There is little in the document of the “Blood and Bandage” in drive or brand that is part of folklore. There was time when we were winning minor and U21 All Irelands for the fun of it. Now while we are lower key in recent times the future is bright judging on last year’s drive with the senior, minor and all conquering U17 hurlers and we have a settled football set up for 2018. Strategic Plans are nice and colourful but many of them wind up in lockers gathering dust if not measured. The term comes from ‘Strategos’ and was used against the enemy in war and all the forces must be concentrated for a main offensive so surely with a huge county and the second city we can start delivering again. The most effective Strategy written in recent years was ‘Unleashing the Blue Wave – a Strategy for Dublin GAA 2011-2017’ and runs to 83 pages. It is a detailed document and based on the principal what gets measured gets done. The Dubs have delivered a lot since 2011 so we will await the result of the Cork Plan as the Rebel brand seeks out glory days in winning wars again.

Scór na nÓg Finals in Lisgoold on 25th November 2017.

The East Cork Scór na nÓg finals take place in Lisgoold on Saturday 25th November at 7.30 pm. The promotion of Scór at adult and juvenile levels has helped to play an important role in maintaining our culture and heritage. It gives juveniles and adults a real opportunity to interact with the best of Irish culture and through the years East Cork clubs have been outstanding in their contribution. Castlelyons especially as a community celebrated Comóradh 100 Bliain with massive energy. We have the great writings of An tAthair Peadar and others so hopefully our Cultural Officers and Executive will promote Scór again this year with the 25.11.17 in mind.

Incidentally, the Munster Intermediate football championship between Mallow and An Gaeltacht, Kerry was played in Mallow last Sunday and the roars of supporters and communication between the Kerry players was all as Gaeilge. The opposition and others found it hard to cope with the language much less the football as they gave an exhibition of point scoring in the game. Culture, football and cuteness seems innate in Kerry folk.
