Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 15.1.18 2018-01-23 15:30:00

Intermediate Team commence Training.

Back to business again for our Intermediate hurling team and the slog of winter training as they started with a fitness last Sunday morning. However, there were down a few as Colm Spillane, Colm Barry and Niall O Leary were away with Cork, Jack Barry and Jamie O Leary are on third level activity this weather while Anthony Spillane is still suffering from groin trouble and unavailable for the immediate future. Cian O Leary and Ronan Bransfield from last years squad are in Dublin and hopefully they may be available later. Otherwise the turnout was reasonable. Tosach maith leath na hoibre and a good start is necessary as the League is earlier this year. We are now up in the Premier Division and a trip into Fermoy, out to Kilworth or over to Mallow will be a serious wake up call if we are not in reasonable condition. Mick Spillane, the Manager, and John McCarthy, selector, has added a new selector this year, namely Padraig Murphy. Padraig, from Aghabullogue, who came to Castlelyons some years ago and played with us is an astute hurling man and will be a help to the backroom staff further strengthened with Brian Horgan as physical trainer. Darren Tobin, of course, is coach to the team. Go n-éirí libh.

Kerry record a historic hurling win over Cork in Tralee.

Kerry 1-23 Cork 1-13

It was certainly tough going for any young Cork players attempting to break into the county scene in Austin Stack Park, Tralee, last Sunday as Kerry recorded a historic 10-point victory over Cork in the Co-Op Superstores hurling league. The game was a dead rubber clash as both teams were already out of the competition. Kerry were strong, but the Cork outfit was experimental and featured many new players. Colm Barry and Niall O Leary were in at full and centre back and done well. However, Cork have their full panel in training for some time and, no doubt, will be ready to take on Kilkenny in the new Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Saturday 27th January at 7 pm in the Allianz hurling league. This will be preceded by the Cork v Tipperary Division 2 Football League game at 5 pm. These are big games for Cork as both Managers John Meyler(hurling) and Ronan McCarthy(football) will be out to do well on the home sod.

Castlelyons GAA Club Bar.

At our recent meeting the sub committee running the Club Bar requested that if members want the bar open for a game or club event that they should give good notice to the committee to organise staff and stock. The ambience and setting in the club bar is now very pleasant with a new TV and several improvements and it is open on Saturday nights. So, with home league and challenge games coming up and any other evenings enjoy a break and chat at the bar.
