Castlelyons GAA Notes week ended 22.1.18. 2018-01-23 17:02:00

Special presentation to Michael Hegarty at Castlelyons Social.

We had an excellent night at our Victory Social in the Rochestown Park Hotel last Saturday night. Our Chairman Con Lawlor made a special presentation on behalf of the Adult, Juvenile and Camogie Clubs to Michael Hegarty our Weekly Lotto Cash Officer who has stood down after over twenty years’ service. Michael a former Postmaster in Fermoy used his facility with the cash and pen to ensure our weekly lotto flourished over the years. Completely dedicated, he rarely missed a Monday night down the years. A serious Deise man maybe he is planning to give them Waterford boys a bit of advice on raising finance. However, he is will still lend us a helping hand but will have more freedom. Thanks again Michael, to Ann your wife and your family for all the assistance over the years. East Cork Board Chairman Donal O Keefe presented medals to our East Cork U21H winners and our East Cork junior football league winners. Thanks to Con Lawlor, James Maye and Denis Fenton their work and preparations with Aidan O Sullivan and Darragh Lawlor liaising with the players and camogie girls on sales.

Result of our Weekly Lotto of the 22.1.18.

The Jackpot is now €5, 200 and our next draw is Monday 29th January at 9.30 pm in the Abbey Tavern. Thanks for your support and please remind your friends that they can play our Lotto Online or purchase from the usual sources.

Intermediate Team continue preparation with talks on nutrition and special exercise.

Our hurling panels were indoor on Sunday and had excellent talks from eminent persons on training with a view to injury prevention and nutrition from two eminent persons. The level of commitment required these times to match up in the preparatory stakes with other teams is phenomenal. Of course, training without proper guidance can result in unintended consequences of mass muscle and drop in speed or even feeling lethargic when the pressure is on during a game. Mick Spillane, our manager is hoping to arrange a few challenge games before our first league game which commences end of February.

Request for Voluntary Stewards in Páirc Uí Chaoimh

There are several big games in the Park this year, the first being a double header on Saturday 31st January 2018, and, of course some Concerts including the three-day Ed Sheeran Concert. If you are over 18 years of age (male or female) and available for a number of games and Concert days please contact the PRO, Castlelyons (0867773100). It is important to be fit, active, friendly, courteous and enthusiastic about the role. New Stewards will be trained and accredited by the GAA National Health & Safety Committee. The course is monitored by the Portobello Institute who will be present. Thanks again to our Castlelyons Stewards who continue to assist in the Park.

Double header in the Park on Saturday 27th January commencing at 5 pm.

Cork footballers play Tipperary in Division 2 the of Football League at 5 pm and the hurlers play Kilkenny at 7 pm in the Allianz hurling league. These are big games for Cork as both Managers Ronan McCarthy(football) and John Meyler(hurling) will be out to do well on the home sod. While we don’t have any representatives from East Cork in the football local man Padraig Clancy from Fermoy done well in the McGrath Cup and no doubt will be on the Cork panel. As usual it is expected that East cork will have a strong representation in the hurling and our own man Colm Spillane should be fit to line out and continue last years great form with the Rebels. Go n-éirí libh.

Congratulations to Loreto Convent Fermoy - Munster Camogie Winners.

Congratulations to Loreto Convent Fermoy who won the Munster Senior D Camogie championship recently with a resounding 3-8 to 2-3 victory over Colaiste Phobal, Roscrea. A special congrats to Castlelyons girls Gráinne McCarthy, captain the team and Billy Shanahan as they both played mighty games.

James Kearney does well for St Colman’s in Harty Qr Final

Our man James Kearney scored an important goal for St Colman’s in their Harty Cup Quarter Final game with Christian Brothers College Cork, but CBC ran out victors 1-17 to 1-13. This was the third year in a row that these teams met in the last eight but the first time that CBC won and first to reach the Harty semi-final in their history. A noted rugby nursery CBC have four ex pupils on the current Munster squad and, of course, former internationals like Donncha O Callaghan and Tomás O Leary who, also, captained Cork to their last All Ireland minor title back in 2001. They now take on Ardscoil Rís in Mallow this Saturday at 12 md while Midleton CBS play Our Lady’s, Templemore in Clonmel at 1.30 pm in the other semi-final. While St Colman’s must wait another year. Incidentally, the Harty Cup was last won by a Cork College back in 2006 by Midleton CBS so best of luck to the Rebels in the semi finals this weekend.
