Castlelyons GAA Notes WE 12.3.18 2018-03-14 11:40:00

U21 Footballers progress in Championship.

Castlelyons 4-8 Glenbower Rovers 1-9

Despite having very few on the age we showed good form to defeat a strong Glenbower side in the U21 B championship. We led at half time 1-2 to 0-4 and it is regretted by this writer that due to being away this week I do not have a full report but overall a good display and the lads are fulfilling their promise from minor days. Hopefully, we can deliver again in the semi-final versus Midleton. This game is scheduled for 31st March at 3pm at a venue to be arranged unless there is an agreement between the clubs to play it on a more suitable date.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Eoin O Neill, Conor McCarthy, Andrew O Neill, Peter Roche, Niall O Leary(0-1), Ian Riardon(0-1)(Captain, David Morrison(1-2), Pearse Varner, Shane Cotter, Barry Murphy(1-2), James Kearney(0-1), Richard Morrison(2-0), Mark Spillane(0-1) and Jack Ronayne. Subs: - James McCarthy for Cotter 40 mins

Castlelyons defeated in East Cork Division 2 JFL

Castlelyons 2-6 Aghada 1-10

This was certainly a game of two half’s as Castlelyons playing with the aid of a strong wind and rain in the first half ran up a strong score to lead 2-6 to 0-2 at half time. However, it was not enough as Aghada proved too strong in the second half.

Referee Brian Murphy started the second half and it was almost storm Emma over again but Aghada used the wind to their advantage taking some great scores from further out and outscoring our lads 1-8 to 0-0 in the second half. Colm Barry had to leave the field with an injury and Shane Moroney tired in the second half due to a heavy army schedule as in fairness to him it was great form of him to play on the night. Despite this we did have a few chances to draw the game, but our luck ran out. This is our second league loss in Division 2 so the lads, but we are making some progress in the U21 championship and hopefully with the fine evenings we could see a return to form again.

Team: - John Paul Murphy, Brian Carroll, Ciarán McGann, Shane Fenton, Aidan O Sullivan, Colm Barry (0-1), Liam Moroney, Shane Moroney. Darragh Lawlor (0-1), Colm O Neill (0-1), Ronan Fenton (0-1), Eoin Maye (1-0), Robbie Feeney (1-0), Jack Barry and Alan Fenton (0-2): Subs: - Brian O Donovan, Brian Murphy, Conor McCarthy and Alan O Neill.

SHC Champions Imokilly in Championship action on Thursday 22nd March 2018.

Well what a year it was for Imokilly in 2017 as they livened up the county championship with some mighty hurling and had a comprehensive victory over Blackrock in the first ever county SHC final in the new Park. While the hurling, memories and crack were so enjoyable it’s all hands on the camán again for 2018.

The Candy Stripes have an even stronger array of talent available again this year as the Spillane brothers are free from UCC, Shane Hegarty free from CIT and county man Bill Cooper also available as Youghal are back in intermediate ranks. Thee are a host of others putting up their hands and lads returned from injury now available also. Picking the team and particularly the panel will be all important. However, we play Muskerry in Riverstown on Thursday 22nd March at 7.45pm in the senior divisions hurling championship and its winner take all so there must be no slip up as Muskerry, themselves a formidable outfit, must be treated with respect. Best of luck to the boss Fergal Condon, his management outfit and all the lads.

Incidentally Jack Barry of our own club has secured a permit to play senior hurling with UCC for a further year. In the last few years Jack has done well in goals while UCC have promised a lot but not delivered. They have a lot of good hurlers available to them this year also, so they could yet be a force in the SHC.

Intermediate Hurlers – Trip to Tipp.

Last Saturday our intermediate hurlers travelled into the heart of Tipperary to play Clonakenny in a challenge game. Clonakenny, a good side, play in the mid Tipperary Division and have a proud tradition with many former great players including former Minister for Defence Michael Smith and that excellent administrator, former great county hurler and present trustee of the GAA John Costigan. Our lads travelled well and in a good pitch and reasonable weather conditions settled into the game to lead 0-5 to 0-0 with Niall O Leary hurling well and contributing 0-2. Clonakenny then settled into it go ahead 0-2 at the end of the first half.

After the break our lads began to get grip of things and narrowed the difference to the minimum, but this would be the closest they would come as Clonakenny ran out convincing winners at the end. Credit must go to our lads who played their second game in less than 24 hours as they had a football league game versus Midleton the night before. This showed in the legs during the second half. It was great to see five young players introduced for their first game at adult level and they all more than held their own. Well done to all and particularly on this occasion to our chef d’équipe, Aidan O Sullivan, who organised the game and a very pleasant social evening. However, its back to the tougher stuff of the Premier IHL as we are away to Blarney this weekend. This will be a tough one and hopefully we can come out the right side. The day or time is not fixed so we will notify all supporters as soon as possible per Facebook and Twitter.

Cork play Waterford in Relegation Play Off on Sunday in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Cork hurlers are now involved in a tough relegation play off against Waterford next Sunday at home in Páirc Uí Chaoimh at 3pm. This is a most important game for Cork as the lower league may not be the best for Cork hurling. There were some nice stories floating about last week how Galway were enjoying their rest down there this year, but Limerick caught them, and they have it all to do again for another year. So, it’s time for Cork to show a bit of form as they Déise will be tough. The Rebels certainly need your support for Sunday and Children U16 are free for this one.

Congratulations to All Ireland Camogie champions Loreto College Fermoy.

Congratulations to Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy who defeated Coláiste Naomh Cormac, Kilcormac in Offaly in the O Neills All -Ireland Post-Primary Schools Senior D Final last Sunday on a score 1-12 to 1-8. A historic day for this great College and well done to all Castlelyons girls on the panel; Grainne McCarthy (captain), Billie Shanahan, Lucy McNulty, Ava Hallihan, Avril Beirne and Niamh Colman.

Dr. Tom Cavanagh - Grand Marshal Fermoy St Patrick’s Day Parade.

Fermoy St Patrick's Day parade, now in its 35th consecutive year will once again be an opportunity for the local community to come together in celebration of our culture and this year its Bliain na Gaeilge. The Grand Marshall for the Parade is Dr. Tom Cavanagh, a true Fermoy man, outstanding businessman, philanthropist and, of course, sportsman. Tom has given so much of his time and financial assistance in various projects to Fermoy and the surrounding area over many years. So, St Patrick’s Day Parade this year offers the community of the greater Fermoy area the chance to say thank you to Tom Cavanagh for all that he has done on our behalf over the years. No doubt we will have a strong representation from Castlelyons on the day and a great day for all.
